Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another reaction of Donna Summer with a PATREON request to check out "Love to Love You Baby." In this extended version we get it all, Giorgio Moroder really is king with instrumentation. Donna's vocals shine, but in a different more overtly sexual way. Have a gander!

And that's 1975!!! Can you imagine what it was to listen this in 1975??? Hiper sexual, hiper disco, hiper trance, a real revolution in pop music. And this is the original version on the record, that occupies entire side A of the original album... She later wasn't very confortable with this because a lot of people called her the Sex Queen, so she slowly in the following years started to mix this sexy side with another themes, but I think she was a pioneer and a huge influence for many artists who came several years later... Ahead of her time, with this song, and with "I Feel Love" a few years later, Donna / Moroder / Bellote, ETERNAL ICONS!!!

Haha! That's not how I perceived it in 1976, when I first heard it. Music was corny and sexy, long before that, at least in my part of the world. I'm not trying to be unfriendly or anything, but I saw this as just another piece of cheesy pop music when it came out. Regarding commercial disco, I preferred things like Abba and Boney M, even Baccara actually (they sounded sexier than Donna :D)

I was fortunate enough to have seen Donna Summer in concert in the mid ‘90’s here in California. I don’t think many people realize just how beautiful and powerful this woman’s voice was. Her voice live, is even better then her studio recordings. She was in the same category as Whitney Houston when it came to her vocal abilities, yet she got no where near the same praise as Whitney, which is a shame. I’m glad we can honor her by revisiting her music like this today. Thanks for the reaction! 🙂✌🏻🙂

Thank you for this comment! I agree. Donna was a VERY talented singer and could sing almost any genre of music with her vocal abilities. I saw her in concert 3 or 4 times and she was AMAZING!!! I think a lot of people ONLY think of her a "The Queen of Disco" but she was SO MUCH more! Doesn't get the credit and real praise she deserves. If it wasn't for Donna, there may not have been a Madonna or Whitney. She helped pave the way for a lot of female artists that followed.

I saw Donna live probably 10 times, starting with Universal Amphtheeatre on the night she recorded the Live and More album. If you notice on that album, she doesn't use the baby breath voice and goes full throttle. Donna had the most unbelievable voice. Her live performances were studio quality or better on ANYTHING. She could and did sing everything. Rock, New Wave, Country, EDM, Standards, just endless talent. and yes, she was very underrated. Her record companies screwed her over. again and again. Thankfully there are many videos on KZbin that document her singing live and singing songs she never recorded. No one has a voice like hers and no one ever will.

And can you imagine? This was 1975! It was banned in many countries because it was WAY too sexual at the time. She actually wrote the lyrics and recorded it as a demo for another singer to sing. She NEVER intended the song for herself. They liked her demo so much when it was played at a particular party, that they had her go in make this 17 minute version because everyone wanted it played over and over at this party and that was what really started it all for her. She was so uncomfortable recording it that she had the lights dimmed to dark and lied on the floor on her back singing. She did do all the background vocals herself on this song too as she did with most of her songs. She may have had a couple of singers backing her too, not sure but I know it's her there too.
@srenjensen5735
@srenjensen5735 2 жыл бұрын
She rarely did backing vocals herself after this. The original 1975 recording featured only herself, but when they remixed and extended it for the album version, Gitta Walthers, Lucy Neale and Betsy Allen overdubbed additional backing vocals which is what you hear on the last part of the album version (at 18:00 in this video, Love to love you, baby baby ... and the entire reprise).

Thank you for reacting to the full album version of this iconic track.This is undoubtedly one of the sexiest songs ever recorded (if not THE sexiest). And to think this was 1975! As you said, she only wanted to record it as a demo and not release it herself. She said in an interview that the record was released in the US without her even knowing about it. It exploded over there and there was no stopping it anymore. Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder & Pete Bellotte were a winning combination and real trailblazers in the seventies. Everything they created during that time was pure gold! They were very prolific as well, often releasing two albums in one year. Donna was also the first artist to take three consecutive double albums to number one on the US album chart. I recommend you react to the MacArthur Park Suite. It's almost 18 minutes long and it's EPIC! Her majectic vocals on this particular track are mindblowing. Here's a link with full lyrics: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJ-4ZnhsbtN_pKM

Donna was a stellar vocalist who acted out her songs. So much so to the extent of almost being unrecognizable. One might not know this was the same singer that sung "She Works Hard For The Money", "On The Radio" or "Dinner With Gershwin". That's one of the reasons she's #1 on my female vocalist list: Because all other female vocalist seem to sound the same from one song to the next. Donna changed it up vocally. She once said, she made her voice fit the style of the song, instead of turning down a song simply because it wasn't her style like another singer might have done. Donna made it her style by taking on the character of the song. On this one, she was imagining Marilyn Monroe, singing it in the dark and, I believe, lying on the floor.

Finished classes, knocked out 2 housekeeping jobs, got in about 2 hours of homework and, by 10pm, rolled a joint, lit it, hopped onto my bicycle and rode to the new disco bar in an Urbana warehouse. Danced until about 2am when we got sent to our beds by the bar owners. :D These songs were new. And, oh, yeah - Love to Love You, Baby. :D

This songs today makes me feel nostalgic about the local FM radio where I listened to it first when I was 12-13 (the radio station was set in a farm and broadcasting about 30kms around, the hosts were all volunteers bringing their own records, and at night a machine automatically played cassettes). Dereck, I actually own both the album and the 12" single of Love To Love You Baby so I can tell you definitively that both versions are the same. Donna had several great albums and there were quite a few great album cuts that were very good. One such deep cut is called Love's Unkind. I hope you check it out. During the last half of the 1970's, Donna became known as the Undisputed Queen Of Disco. She was the only real competition to the Bee Gees, who were the undisputed Kings of Disco. But unlike the Bee Gees, when Disco died in the early 80's, Donna Summer had more hits than the Bee Gees and was the only Disco artist to successfully make the transition to pop with hits like Cold Love, Who Do You Think You're Fooling, The Wanderer and her anthem song to working women everywhere, She Works Hard For The Money. However, she never again was able to reach the heady heights she experienced during her reign as the Queen Of Disco. I hope you will check out more Donna Summer including the epic MacArthur Park medley which contains three songs with the MacArthur Park Reprise at the end. Well worth your time spent hearing.

They made it 17 minutes on purpose because that was documented to be the average time it took a couple to climax during sex. The album had this version. It took up the whole first side of the album, and then there were only 4 cuts on the other side, plus a reprise of Full Of Emptiness. She uses her stronger voice on "Pandora's Box" which is a great song. Giorgio Moroder was her producer with Pete Bellote for all of her albums up to the previously unreleased " I"m Rainbow" She moved on to other producers after that. Moroder is iconic and produced for other singers and did many 80's soundtrack albums.

Each album side was arranged in one continuous mix, with every track flowing seamlessly into the next, making it a non-stop disco extravaganza. The album ended on side 4 with the 12-minute long 12-inch version of "No More Tears" followed by a reprise of the title track "On The Radio" in its long version. Pure perfection.

Believe it or not to get through singing the track Donna said she cast herself as Marilyn Monroe, and it was her thinking of what the song would sound like had Marilyn been the one singing it because she could not do it as herself. Donna never thought of herself as a sexual person, she said she was the funny girl. After hearing the song her new label and the world cast her as this sexual goddess. After the press named her the First Lady Of Love her label wanted her to be that. Donna had a hard time playing this character she hated it. Around 1978 she hated it so much she almost killed herself because of the attention she was getting. Thank god she didn't, but after she become a born again christian she never sang the song live again. After the 70's you will not find a live version of LTLYB ever again.

She did not pleasure herself. She laid down on the floor in the dark and imagined herself in a sexual situation. In reality, She never liked this song at all and felt embarrassed to have done it. After her Bad Girls tour, she stopped performing it live. I did see her bring it back in a great concert in 2009, but she cleaned it up without the moaning.

I can't imagine how many babies were made to this version of the song. The original story is it was sent to the president of Casablanca records, when it arrived they were having a party, 70's style (read drugs orgy) and he played it and all the guests were saying over and over again, put it back on, put it back on. So that's when he called Moroder and told him to do an extended version #truestory

Let us not forger that Georgio Moroder did all of the synthesized music for Donna Summer and also a couple of soundtracks. One was the soundtrack for Midnight Express, which contained the hit single Chase, and the other was the soundtrack for Cat People with the original version of Putting Out Fire (With Gasoline) with David Bowie on lead vocals. Of course, Georgio!s first hit came in the very early 70's and is called Baby Blue.
@rsmith7912

I guess your comments here depend on where you live in the world. I'm in the UK & Giorgio's first hit single here was in Sep '77, taken from the album of the same name 'From Here To Eternity'. It peaked at no 20 on the pop charts just only a couple of months after Donna's megahit 'I Feel Love' had shot to no 1 in the pop charts staying there for four weeks in total. 'Eternity' is an outstanding production by Giorgio. The A-side is just one glorious medley of pure electronic disco tracks. 'Baby Blue' which you mention, was released in '79 as an album track on his 'E=MC2' LP but it was never a single release, not in the UK anyway. Giorgio also produced a few other Soundtrack albums at the time. The American Gigolo LP gave Blondie a no 1 hit with 'Call Me'. The Top Gun LP gave Berlin another no 1 hit with 'You Take My Breath Away'. He made the OSTs for 'Battlestar Gallactica' & 'Foxes' with Jodie Foster starring. That LP has another very 'Chase' like epic disco track called 'Valley Of The Dolls' on it which has to be heard very loud if possible. Moroder was a very busy man during those years & is definately the King of electronic disco while Donna was also being very busy holding the title of The Queen of Disco & the first Lady of Love. We were so lucky back then to have such innovating artists in our lifetimes.

Saw her perform live in Germany before she was global - was a gay nightclub in a converted WW2 aircraft hangar in Nuremberg- think it was 74/75 New Years when I was in Munich. She was AMAZING! There were in fact two memorable life-moments for me that night. I was staying with my lover Dini in Munich, a Hungarian Count so a wide social circle he took me everywhere and everywhere we went to dinner parties and clubs I got told endlessly that I had a doppelgänger in Munich. We all hear this at stages in life so I ignored it. Until THAT night I’m dancing with hundreds of men to Donna Summer on stage- I looked across at a boy staring at me! As soon as our eyes met - I knew it was him - it was me!!! We couldn’t stop looking at each other. I did get to speak to him but he spoke very little English. And my German was rudimentary. But I’ve never forgotten him with the soundtrack of Donna Summer to accompany us and that meeting of doppelgängers.

I just found this and had wondered if anyone reacted to this full length studio version - the best. It’s so beautiful…. Hard to believe this got radio play in 1975, though a very friendly short version. I remember People magazine stating there were 42 orgasms in this. Also she was asked if she was touching herself during the recording process and she answered “Yes. I had a hand on one knee.” The way the instrumentation fades and then rebuilds with so many layers is a sex act itself. Yes - brilliant!
