The clothes they have are their official costumes they used when the official «Ring Ring» video débuted, the previous year (1973). This is one of the most «classic» early-ABBA tunes. Another song, that is ignored, from around this period, is «Gonna Sing You My Lovesong», which has great lead vocals from Anni-Frid, and, of course the «signature» Agnetha/Frida heavenly harmonies. In my opinion, this is one of ABBA's greatest songs from the early days,,,, it is an undiscovered «gem». 💎🎼🎶🎵

Apparently stage costumes were tax deductible in Sweden and they used a designer and told him the more outrageous the better apparently! Their looks here: 1974-1975 was the era of glam rock in Europe, and in those days ABBA were very inspired by glam clothes-wise. As they became more musically ambitious, more popular, and needed less attention, their looks also became less flamboyant. But these early looks stuck to them, and they were often used to ridicule them. But - hey - they looked great (and a bit crazy).

This was a big hit over here in Germany, a Number 2 on the charts and i think it's a German TV appearance, which was always lipsynch in the 70's. I kinda remember, but not too clearly. This was the follow up single to Waterloo in some countries. And considered to be very different from Waterloo it was immediately giving them superstardom in Germany. Honey Honey is very well arranged going from slight chessiness to relaxed sophisticated orchestration and back... but extremely catchy. They tuned down their fancy dresses by 1975 to relatively normal from end of 1976 on, though their tour clothings for their first European tour by the end of 74 was extremely sexy and glam. This song was released as a cover in other territories, i think UK, but forgot... oh it was Sweet Dreams and a UK #10...

There are over 100 ABBA songs and every one is different, taking many influences to form their musical journey. 'Honey Honey' was the follow up to 'Waterloo' in most countries but not in the UK. It went to Number 2 in Germany (where this show was recorded) and Number 4 in both Austria and Switzerland. Amazingly as the Eurovision Song Contest was barely known in the US and as ABBA only visited briefly on the back of Waterloo going to 10 in the autumn, it managed to get to Number 27. The girls later said the tried to sound a little sexy on this song but weren't sure the succeeded. Dereck, you have only just dipped your toes in the ABBA story! Have fun investigating the work of these four extremely talenetd people.

So young and exuberant. No idea at this time just of how big they'd become, and no idea of the heartaches that lay ahead either. With time on their sides, they would never grow old. But within five years it began to unravel for them - not the songs, but their private lives. Abba were sexy without aiming to be sexy. They didn't need to do erotic dance moves or dress like schoolgirls to titillate audiences. Their sexiness came not from 'midriff' but from their naturalness.

I'm really pleased you did this one. It's a wonderful example of one of their early works. This is right after their smash hit, Waterloo, and, as with a lot of post-Eurovision winner's songs, was largely ignored other than Germany and Austria. Which is a huge shame as this song is so warm and sweet, (a bit like honey, I guess), and should have done much better. It would take them another year and several more singles before they got the recognition they richly deserved. Weirdly enough, I wasn't a huge fan, back in the day, (I was only 6, after all), but I remember some of their interim singles between Waterloo and their next big hit, 'S.O.S', quite well. My older brother having bought a number of their singles and a couple of albums might have had something to do with that, though! The outfits are an indicator of when this was released. 1974. Glam rock was on it's way out, by this time, but there's still remnants of it, here. Another similar song to this one, from their even earlier catalogue is, 'Ring, Ring', which was their entry for the Swedish entrant to the Eurovision Song Contest in 1973. They lost out, but came back a year later.

best regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina congratulations on your reaction to "Honey honey" very good and catchy song It is from the post "Waterloo" era of 1974, when ABBA was looking for its second success, and the revival of "Ring ring", plus the singles "Honey honey" and "So long" did not achieve great impact and they had to wait for 1975 with the approach of "I do I do I do I do I do" and the definitive impact of "S.O.S." that will start your unbroken chain of successes "Honey honey" is from the group in which The boys on the one hand and The girls on the other sing verses in solo responding, as in the debut "People need love" and the following "He is your brother" and "Love isn't easy" The costumes they use are Superheroes with superpowers, they did it in 1974 from the promotional video for "Ring ring" that I put here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/in2TdqKOmdWCp8k I look forward to your next reactions to the first ABBA songs. In the time around 74-75... the 70's was interesting in Sweden, when it came to groups like ABBA and other music-group they found a little loop-hole in the taxes. They could deduct the money of the clothes on the tax IF the clothes where so far out they couldn't be worn in private, just for work. If you look up what Swedish groups wore in that era it is completely nuts. They also had their eye on the glamrock-genre with David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust and others. They knew early on that they needed to stand out in every way possible in the beginning and they used every trick in the book. They tuned down their looks after a while but still keeping the idea of a visual look on stage.

This is from their Waterloo album. The costumes were created...the bolder the better was the attitude. The early years, they tried to be as visually outrageous as possible, to get noticed. It looks very glamrockish. Honey Honey is one of the standouts from the album. It was a hit for ABBA and was covered by an act called The Sweet Dreams. This is still, though, from the period before the group found their groove, their "sound". Not sure if Benny actually contributed vocals or not. It is rare to hear him. He always said his voice wasn't good. I think he sang lead on one or two ABBA songs. Suzy Hang Around comes to mind. You can hear more of him off the album Bjorn and he released before ABBA, titled Lycka. He did leads for the song Kära gamla sol, kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoDOfKWLidKYi6s.

Hej, Dereck 👋😃 • That bit of instrumentation that you liked is played on a very early synthesizer, called the 'Mellotron', by Benny (not here, as he's on the piano, but when they were multi-track recording). Benny used the 'Mellotron' a lot in their earlier recordings (and in particular, is quite noticeable in these songs for example: 'Watch Out', 'Gonna Sing You My Lovesong' and 'So Long'). Here's a Wikipedia link for more information about that instrument: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellotron • There's no special-occasion as to why ABBA wore these costumes, other than that was around the era of 'Glam Rock', and such costumes were quite normal for pop and rock acts in the early/mid-1970s, in the UK (eg: the group 'Sweet'), Europe and Australia (eg: the group 'Skyhooks') 😊 And the guy who you thought was looking a bit vampire-like, was someone who was introducing them on this German TV show ('The James Last Show'). ABBA also sing 'Waterloo' on that show, and he was dressed in a cape to give a look of Napoleon.
