What a vibrant and original Donna Summer song! Pop/rock electro with a singing in Elvis fashion and with Donna's lovely falsetto voice. This song was again so modern back then, and it has been up to today very underrated. For me one of the best Donna songs ever and one of the most progressive songs of the early(1980!) 80's

This song is most definately a far cry from her earlier 70,s disco hits,this is more like new wave,during 1979-81 music was definitely straying awayfrom the 70.s disco sound.artists such as Devo,B-52s,tom tom club,talking heads were evident of this around that time,although the music still got u down on the dance floor,donna summer definitely rocks this song and the video definitely has the feel of early mtv

Donna was the first black female played on MTV and the first to be played in heavy rotation on MTV (She Works Hard for the Money 83), she was also the first to have her videos played in consistent heavy rotation, as all 3 videos that followed (SWHFTM) were played in heavy rotation. Followed by the Pointer Sisters and Tina Turner. For some reason this trailblazing has been incorrectly attributed to WH or JJ. Donna was also first to be nominated for an MTV award, Tina was the first to win one. Houston's wiki bio says she was also a trailblazer for other minorities, like latinos, I guess they have never heard of Linda Ronstadt of Julio Iglesias who were played in heavy rotation before Houston's debut. Sheila E also was played in HR and nominated for 3 MTV awards, and 2 Grammys before Houston.

So do I. And, although I'm not religious, I find it has a very strong basic message. Donna was never happy with her "bad girl" image and "The Wanderer" is a bit like her response to it. It shows how much control she had over the album as a whole too. She has made a lot of quality music during her long career and it has stood the test of time, as quality always does.

@omanmc ...The Wanderer (LP) got a glowing review from Dave Marsh in the New Rolling Stone Record Guide: "On this album, Summer, Bellotte, and Moroder function as a sort of high-tech rock band. With the possible exception of Michael Jackson's Off the Wall, no-one has made a contemporary dance record with so much stylistic depth, grace and power."

"The Wanderer" album was like a rejection of some of her past albums, e.g. "Bad Girls", or maybe it was just a new departure. Either way, she was never as popular after she released "The Wanderer" album. I suppose everyone reaches a peak - of popularity, I mean - and hers was in 1979, during the "Bad Girls" era.
@brkitdwn4 жыл бұрын
1979 was the end of disco's control of the music industry. By 1980, "New Wave" was the thing, and dominated most of the 80s. Donna was pivoting with the times, though, it wasn't what her fans really wanted. So, down she came.
