I remember these Sunrise Dances when I was little. My father the late Jerry Preston Sr. always took us boys to them. I miss them but I am closer to going to one. I Love my people! All the way from Milwaukee, WI.

Can anybody explain to me the part of the ceremony where they put that white liquid over that womans head and body? Thank you very much for posting this video, even though I know most of these ceremonies are not to be shared with big public. I am from Serbia(european natives) but I devoted a lot of time on my life researching native american cultures and their legacies to the world civilisation. I would be very grateful if you could answer my question. Thank you in advance, and wish you all the best! Regarda from across the pond!

This is taken from a couple of articles. The answer to your question is at the end. She is dressed in the ceremonial costume of her Apache heritage: a fringed buckskin serape the color of the sun and clouds, a beaded necklace adorned with butterflies. An abalone shell, representing purity, rests on her forehead. An eagle feather, symbolizing a long, healthy life, is tied to her dark hair. She clasps a cane strung with bells and feathers, to be saved for when she grows old. At half-past five on this Saturday morning, Angel takes her position in the center of the old cornfield. Her parents by her side, she bows her head as a medicine man prays. Angel is about to begin the most important day of her young life. Over the next 5 hours, she will dance almost continuously as part of an ancient coming-of-age ceremony called the Sunrise Dance. “Na’ii’ees” in Apache, the dance marks the passage to womanhood. During the ceremony, the girl becomes “Changing Woman,” who was impregnated by the sun and the rain, and gave birth to the first Apache people. The four-day ceremony begins on a Friday night, when the girl is dressed in traditional costume. The dance takes place Saturday morning, followed by a painting ceremony the next day to symbolize the final metamorphosis to womanhood. On the final day, the girl’s costume is removed. The traditional Apache woman was considered a "Keeper of The Way," meaning they remembered and passed on their traditions and culture. She was expected to safeguard the lore, customs, and traditions of her family, band, and tribe, and then hand them on to the next generation. In ancient myths of the Chiricahua, White Painted Woman is the Virgin Mother of the people. She is the origin of the ceremonies for the women. It is from the Virgin Mother that the Apache women defined their roles with their husbands, children, and tribe.
