Very impressive, nice smooth action with no binding or jerking. The truss beam is light and rigid, good design and execution, the test cuts will be interesting.

I love your simple and robust solutions. I would have used a massive drive shaft, which would be heavy as hell and had to be supported in the middle. The alluminum tube, you used, is much lighter and could nevertheless transmitt some momentum. Great.👍

Its just as well you're a crazy young man my friend, this old man is sitting in his nice warm living room enjoying a glass of red wine watching you work in the snow... 🤯 my knee aches, my knuckles ache and my fingers are numb just watching you... I know what the news projects will be though! A pad for the sawmill to rest on, of course created using your own rock crusher and then a roof over the sawmill created using your sawmill. I make light of my admiration for you, and yet I do mean it with the greatest of respect because your hard work is always to better the lives of you and your family on the homestead/farm. All the very best of regards from (a dry and only slightly cold) Scotland

You may need to add cables for support in the other direction. You can see the beam dip down when you move the gantry across.
@chrispy1965 Жыл бұрын
You are right. In my humble opinion they are mounted upside down.
@wilsonmetry Жыл бұрын
Yes, the cables are in compression in their current configuration. They need to be flipped 180 degrees so they are in tension as the truss flexes downward. Or just flip the whole truss if possible. source: am architect and I have designed several similar structures.
@curtism7203 Жыл бұрын
@@wilsonmetry I was wondering if maybe he was using the cables to correct a arch from manufacturing. hes not a dumb guy and wouldnt do that if there wasnt a reason.

@herrkull22299 ай бұрын
As you can see, if you look carefully, his beam is slightly arched upwards, so that compensation of deformation is probably too much in his case. So he certainly would have wanted to correct it by cabling it in the opposite direction...

Great project. When you start testing if there is too much deflection in the truss as the motor and blade carriage roll across while cutting consider spot welding a full skin of thin sheet metal to each side of your truss beam, like a unibody frame. You will figure it out.

@JB-NZ Жыл бұрын
Well done, I like it. I hope though the saw carrier assembly doesnt jump off the rails if it hits something hard in a piece of wood. I know it has bearings on the back, top, front etc, but if it hit something hard in a log and it jumped, could the whole assembly potentially come off - with a spinning blade, that could be quite dangerous. Likely never happen, but its what came to mind when I saw you put the carrier on the rail. Maybe just need a safety/jockey wheel to stop that ever being a possibility? Well done, this is awesome.
@DonnDIY Жыл бұрын
The weight of the carriage is substantial - at least around 50kg (100lbs) or more. The possibility of the carriage falling off is miniscule but indeed, never zero. If the blade hits something in the log it'll just bust the teeth and the blade will not cut anymore. And aince I move the carriage by hand I will definitely feel it and immediately stop moving the carriage.👍
@JB-NZ Жыл бұрын
@@DonnDIY Yes, all good. Just something that came to mind. It would be horrible to have this blade running at 2500RPM or whatever it is, and it somehow launched off the rail due to hitting something inside the wood which is unseen (metal stake or something). You know this machine better than anyone though. Carry on :) Thanks Donn

It looks excellent, and an amazing job. I am looking forward to seeing chips fly! But I was wondering, the long silver, diagonal, tension rods inside your truss beam that appeared at 6:20, are they the wrong way around? Shouldn't they be connected to the top at the ends and the bottom in the middle? You can then tighten them to pull the middle of the beam up to counter any sag. The way they are, any load in the middle of the beam would put those thin rods in compression. Or have I messed something else in your design? Appologies if I have.

True genius Don, congratulations on a fantastic build. Like you I believe that this is indeed a fantastic design, and if I had the skills like yours, would love to build one myself. Did notice from around 7:56 to 8:06 the beam flexing under the weight of the saw carriage as it traverses back and forth. Is this going to be a problem in getting a straight horizontal cut? Either way I'm sure, if it is, your cunning mind will come up with an easy fix. Well done...
@DonnDIY Жыл бұрын
It does flex indeed. However, the beam is curved upward a bit which should compensate for the deflection and result in a straight-ish cut. I will test the sawmill as-is and see how it performs. If needed I will just make a new truss beam out of thicker steel.👍
