Powertrain From Tractor PTO Parts - Tracked Amphibious Vehicle Build Ep. 5

Fabricating tracked amphibious vehicle powertrain from tractor PTO parts to transmit the power to the axles which will drive the tracks. The whole day Monday and half of Tuesday this week I was trying to get the plasma cutter to work but the compressed air system still needs extra filters and water collectors and also a completely new line installed in the workshop that will supply the plasma cutter with compressed air since I moved the big air compressor further away from the shop. I didn't get the plasma cutter to work at the moment and had to stick to the angle grinder when cutting out the flanges for the drive shafts or cutting material for the bearing housings. MIG welding the flanges to the PTO forks was a bit tricky - it spit spatter at the beginning and I suspected the material of the PTO forks being high(er) carbon content. But in the end - it was like butter welding it. I also got a start on the bearing housings - the part still cools in the chuck of the lathe as we speak. At first I wanted to make'em out of a simple pipe but it turned out to be a failure since the wall thickness wasn't enough and I didn't want to weld more metal in the pipe to create a lip where the bearing will be pressed against since it was covered with zinc. And welding zinc covered steel is more poisonous than welding raw steel. The progress is slow but inevitable (imagine this sentence with agent Smith's voice from Matrix). Человек имеет токарный станок, а вилку кордана приваривает наглазок. Я бы сделал посадочную проточку и прихватывал бы в тисках, как минимум. Соединение было бы гораздо точнее и прочнее на срез. А так ,.молодец мужик. Болгаркой умеет работать.

Да Мы все до развала были СОВЕТСКИМИ, ЭХ ОЧЕНЬ ЖАЛЬ...НАС ОБЪЕхали и МЫ ПРОСРАЛИ СВОЮ СТРАНУ. И говорим станок советский, всё было СОВЕТСКОЕ. А теперь карликовая МОЛЬ говорит в СССР кроме "калош" ни чего не делали. Я за 1К62 встал в 1966 году и сейчас свой имею 1К62 1982 года...

Not like it's going to turn high rpms but I still would've turned som scrap to align that u-joint to disk hub adapter thing. Build looks great so far. Why I enjoy watching these is it proves there are still resourceful people.

Don't think I have ever seen a two inch drill bit before and I worked of two years as aprentist machinist that was A long time ago .My little lath wouldn't even spin that .Only turns 9 inches .People don't realize how long it takes to machine pieces like that .Great job

One thing I’m wondering about is why not make holes on flanges so yoke collar is a tight fit,then welded both sides? I’ve done it that way on field repairs and is much cleaner and stronger. I was a mobile mechanic for farm industry at one point in my life.

OH BTW Donn......need to cool the air coming out of the main part of the compressor by adding a A/C condenser and a water trap........then it will all be golden for the plasma cutter and no water build up in the compressor tank.....WIN---WIN!!!!

Excellent work. FYI: many universal joint bearing caps are factory ground with a slight taper, being larger at the closed end. It's good practice to always press them outwards to not potentially stretch the yoke bores.

If I may offer a suggestion for those "U" joint bearing caps, pack them full of grease, remove the plug or grease fitting for assembly. This holds the needle bearings in place while, at the same time, filling the entire U-joint full of grease, hence, won't need to grease when completely assembled since you "pre" greased. Am truly enjoying this build, looking forward to seeing the video. Cheers :)

If you want your pto shafts to last you really should machine a shoulder on the universal end you are mounting on the hub plate and locate it in a machined pocket. From my experience in vibration analysis if there is any runout of your yokes it creates axial forces long the shaft which wreck bearings or wear out the sliding shafts. I saw a V10 diesel make like a grenade in a ski lift because of a similar fault with a fluid coupling. That aside, cool project, cant wait to see how it comes together. Always wondered how to shorten a diff housing.

I work for a steel company with a plasma table that could make parts. Also have access to a lathe,but still prefer to do my home projects totally at home. Cut close to shape with a grinder,bolt multiple identical pieces together,then grind some more. Takes time but I get far more satisfaction from doing it all myself the old way.

I helped with a stainless steel sculpture a few years back. Three five-meter tall gum leaves. I did 180 meters of tig welding to finish it. We started out using general-purpose gas but then got some pure argon. I didn't notice a difference (still learning ) but then the argon ran out and we went back to the GP gas. I couldn't weld with it. Hated it. We got more argon after that. Lol

Dude! More fluid when you are drilling. Keeps the drill bits in good condition and ensure precise holes. Old Engine oil is good too..

Safety hand held vise. Rest the vise against the left side of the column to prevent catching/rotating. If the work piece or vise is too short block with wood to prevent clockwise rotation. Or clamp your workpiece. A faceplate or 4 jaw chuck would have halved the lathe work. Thanks for the content.
