Donny Hathaway had such a soulful voice. He had a lot of great songs. "The Ghetto", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Little Ghetto Boy", "For All We Know", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know". I really like the songs he did with Roberta Flack especially "Where Is The Love" & "The Closer I Get To You". He struggled with mental health issues during his life. Sadly he died in 1979 at only 33 years of age.

I’m reading a new biography of this song’s author Leon Russell. It quotes some of Leon’s unfinished memoir where he states, even decades after Donny recorded this, that it’s still Leon’s favorite version. I love that because I love both Leon AND Donny❤

It’s almost 600 pages long yet there’s no “fluff” to it. The author’s access to the people closest to Leon, his family, friends and people who knew him way back when Leon was a session musician makes this book extra special.

Hey Chod! This is an awesome song and rendition. It’s a Leon Russell masterpiece (Bonnie cowrote Groupie (Superstar)). A year after Donnie, Carpenters released their album A Song For You and recorded the song but didn’t release it as a single. Still, it’s one of Karen’s top vocals. She goes looow a couple of times during it. Donny was a big deal and this is his masterpiece. Leon also recorded it as he did with all his songs. The best Carpenters version is an audio track. A musical genius/savant. He was a brillant musician who had mental health issues. He had maniac depression and psychosis. He didn't like the meds because he made him feel strange and decreased his creativity. So he wouldn't take them. He jumped off a balcony thinking that he could fly. Sad situation. Gone way too soon.

I'm a little late getting back to your channel. Now I see you haven't posted in a month. I hope that this is not an idication that your troubles have returned. Anyway, this was a beauty. I have never heard of Donny Hathaway, but will certainly look him up to hear more. I see from reading the comments that he was emotionall troubled and tragically died before his time. Sadly this is much too common. May his soul rest in peace 💔

Hi Chod. Donnie Hathaway sings This Christmas. One of my favorite Christmas songs. This is a nice cover. You should hear the original by Leon Russell who was a session musician in LA. He is a prolific song writer and a solo performer. Leon also mentored other artists, including the GAP band
