CLASSIC‼️A soul standard. Donny Hathaway has such a beautifully haunting voice. You can hear his aching soul. Empress you are so on point. Between Donny & Stevie so many male singers are inspired by them today.

You are correct. During his life Donny was well-respected in the industry but he didn't have a huge career in terms of sales. To a great degree he was overshadowed by Stevie, who was probably his direct competitor. But since his tragic suicide, his influence has grown considerably. This isn't even his song. It's a cover, but after he made it no one pays anymind to the original. And every cover since has basically recreated this arrangement, rather than try to change it. That's how dope he was. He's frequently cited as an influence by nearly every male singer with any real talent (Usher in fact did a KILLER cover of this song). His daughter Lalah is a major force in her own right

wow! i didn't even think about him and stevie being direct competitors so interesting and also so sad he didn't get his "flowers" or atleast all of them when he was alive.

Smart comparison. Both he and Karen Carpenter died as a result of their mental health struggles and those struggles show up beautifully in their voices. Another pure voice belongs to his frequent collaborator Roberta Flack.

Roberta took Donny's suicide especially hard, Donny's paranoid schizophrenia had caused their friendship and professional relationship to suffer greatly for several years preceding his suicide. Their duets were magical, most notably 1972's Where Is The Love (#5 US) and 1978's The Closer I Get To You (#2 US).

My brother and I wore out the "Donny Hathaway LIVE" album from 1972!!! Donny set the standard...his was a special, rare talent!!! He was such a great composer, arranger and of course, singer!!! UNSUNG: The Story Of Donny Hathaway, was a good treatment on his life, from what I can tell. For the longest I didn't know it was him singing one of my favorite TV theme songs...for "Maude," entitled "And Then There's Maude."

Empress, you gotta see the original by Leon Russell! While I love this version by Donny, it's a sight to see Leon playing piano and singing, so soulful!

Donny Hathaway shows us how much he loves to play the piano. That piano solo at 3:34 of your video is on an inspired level I can only imagine of. There are very few musical prodigies that are allowed to express their gifted skills with 'commercial' recording labels. I'm very grateful for being able to listen to Donny Hathaway's "A Song For You".

Donnie Hathaway was a vocal beast! And so is his daughter Lalah! When she sings this song she sounds just like him! I'm not a patron but Empress there's a song that I would love for you to check out and do a reaction to if you have time. It's on the Bustin Loose soundtrack written by Roberta Flack in 1981 called Children's Song. Fun fact: Tisha Campbell is one of the children's voices!

Arguably the greatest love song Leon Russell had ever written, and the man wrote so many. Donny's beautiful rendition is a slower soulful interpretation of the way Leon performed it (see, for example, kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWjHqGWoaZqLsMk ), the song is a classic that's been covered by so many other greats, including Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, and of course Karen Carpenter -- you have GOT to hear Karen's interpretation, the way Richard produced it is slightly different but equally beautiful in its own right -- you will experience an excellent example of the depths of Karen's contralto on the second verse when she repeats the line, " . . I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine" and she holds the word "mine" way down in her "basement" (as Richard referred to it) for what seems like an eternity, just spectacular -- an excellent audio version is at kzbin.info/www/bejne/bneVeayEq5dooKs . I hope Karen's version will get a reaction request soon so that Donny's is still fresh in your mind, it's so interesting to hear the two back-to-back. It's so sad the way Donny's and Karen's lives ended so tragically, especially when they both had so much more to offer. This was a great request, and a BEAUTIFUL reaction Empress, seriously. Fingers crossed that Karen's request shows up soon. 💯🤗
