I dunno if you're still playing or if this is what he'd recommend but try whipping your hand into the ball instead of just pushing through it. Also when you toss the ball up, make a stance with your non-dominant hand straight out pointing at the ball and your hitting hand poised back like you're Zeus himself, then whip it over palm open.
