Donovan did sing George Harrison's verse later in concert, I'm sure it's on You Tube. While in India Donovan taught Lennon to pick strings which he used on the White Album. He has loads of great songs and some have been covered by many other artists. 'Season of the Witch' is very popular, 'Sunshine Superman', 'Mellow Yellow', 'Wear Your Love Like Heaven', 'Atlantis'.

A hurdy gurdy was an instrument of a wandering minstrel.... and just with Zeppelin along for he ride it was pretty trippy

Love what Don does with his vocals here (that is no vocal effect in post production, even though it sounds like it should be).

Considering Donovan was mates with The Beatles and had numerous hit records during the 60s he seems to be almost forgotten these days, so it's good to see him in a reaction video. I think he's really underrated, perhaps because he was seen as a Dylan copyist in his early days. But his repertoire is so much more than that. Incidentally, "Get Thy Bearings" from the same album is really worth a listen and has a completely different, jazzy vibe.

Yes, I love his sound! Like I said, I only heard about him through a high school friend, and I'm happy I did.

One of the best songs for steering wheel drumming.

Cool office btw. Perfect review. For decade we would wish for a little back story from DJs on the radio, and you would rarely get a crumb. I now have a renewed and expanded appreciation of this song. "Sunshine Superman" is another great one, and possible involving not a purple haze but rather an orange sunshine, which apparently was on the menu back then. Donovan was coolness itself. There is probably a straight line from him through Marc Bolan of T-Rex, Robert Smith of The Cure, Edward Scissorhands, and Jack White. The power of exotic hair. Psychedelic music, btw, coincided with color TV, quite auspiciously. Great show!

as others have cited, used to devastating and terrifying effect in the first few minutes of the David Fincher film ZODIAC also I think he's singing through a Leslie speaker and I love that Allan Holdsworth might be on it

I like some of his stuff, but my one sister loved him. I also like some of the covers that other groups have done of his songs: 1) "Fat Angel" by Jefferson Airplane, 2) "Season of the Witch" Hole, and 3) "Hurdy Gurdy Man" by The Butthole Surfers.

Definitely gaelic-infused psychedelia. I found Donovan's mysticism-pushing mythical, vibes off-putting back when this came out. This one seemed on the more nonsensical side and was more appealing to me than "Sunshine Superman" and others of his. A needling question: why was no use of a hurdy gurdy made in this song, the sounds of which could have been a good fit?

Catch the wind is one of my favourite Donovan songs. Another late 60’s suggestion is Meet on the ledge by Fairport Convention. Was covered by Greta Van Fleet but the original is the best.

Definitely try the Butthole Surfers cover. Gabby & company’s early work represents the brown acid side of the spectrum, psychedelics laced with speed and strychnine. Messed up and wondrous!
