I don’t have any experience with Bahia grass, but I definitely would recommend growing Bermuda! It’s easy for it to spread and fill in quickly, and very heat tolerant. Most yards have Bermuda growing wild in there already, so it’s not much of a challenge to switch over! Best of luck!

@donslawns1 Жыл бұрын
@@pozmarciv depends on your preference. You could easily seed the lawn without tearing it all out- but your lawn will be mixed bermuda/Bahia patches. Best option would be total reno with sod. Middle option would be to scalp the Bahia or spray it out with herbicide, then seed Bermuda. If you want a slow transition, try seeding or sodding the bare areas, and gradually it’ll fill in and you can start killing off the Bahia.

Hey , thanks for the video. I am building a backyard mini soccer field for my 8 year old son and live in South Florida Broward area. Last year I leveled my lawn and ended up going with a Barenburg Turf Blue Kentucky Bluegrass which I believe was a big mistake. I now have all weeds and may need to redo the process all over again but was contemplating wether or not to re-seed or sod. Also don’t know which would be best for Soccer since my son loves to play every other day. Can you help give me some advice on 1. if I should seed or sod ? 2. Which grass type would you recommend for S. Florida Soccer? 3. Which brand seed or where do you recommend I get sod? 4. Should I kill off all old grass and level again? 5. Last what’s the optimal time to seed or sod in S. Florida. Love your videos and anything will help. By the way I have 4000 sq feet to work with.
@donslawns12 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! 1) Sod will take root a lot quicker than seeding. Sounds like your son really enjoys being on the field. 2) I’d highly recommend some type of Bermuda for sports fields in south Florida. 3) I don’t have any recommendations on brands or locations for sod, I would recommend staying within your budget- even cheap Bermuda seed from Home Depot can make a great playing surface for your son. 4) I would consider killing off the old grass/weeds. Make sure you follow the label and don’t seed/sod until safe to do so. 5) S. Florida has great growing season for grass. The best time to seed Bermuda is the hottest time of the year, and it’s better to plant when the days are getting longer (spring/summer). Hope this helps!

Thanks , I’m trying to figure out which grass is the best for my yard because I have bulldogs. Unfortunately they have almost destroyed my backyard. They are exactly just like Billy goats. Every time I turn around they are chewing up big clumps of grass and eating it. I’m like hey this isn’t the Ponderosa where they have a all you can eat salad bar. Makes me so mad, I’ve actually had to buy chicken wire and partition off 80 percent of my yard just so they don’t completely annihilate everything.

I’d go with Bermuda since it can grow and replenish so fast! The fine texture is very soft on the feet also! 👍🏼

Thanks for the informative video I just bought numex Sahara Bermuda & seeded my yard here in Southern Cali I got the nitrogen ready for when it matures, as well as I put starter fertilizer My question is what type of Bermuda grass seed did you use to get that darker green color?
@donslawns12 жыл бұрын
My seed was a Sta-Green blend of Sultan and Sahara! I really think using fertilizers with iron has helped make that darker green pop! You can check out some of the products on the YardMastery link in my video description.

I have some grass but would like to have Bermuda grass instead. If I seed my lawn with Bermuda seed, will it eventually overtake what is already growing?? Plus I love a low cut lawn without the damn weeds.
@donslawns13 жыл бұрын
It’s highly likely that the Bermuda would takeover, it all depends on your cultural practices- mowing, watering, fertilizing, etc. If you plan to seed, I would definitely scalp the lawn as low as possible and try to get bare dirt.

@@donslawns1 Hello, sir. Just out of curiosity is a manual push reel mower required for Bermuda grass? Just asking since I recently moved into a new home (like new construction) and am planning to start establishing a lawn. I layed out winter rye back in November and most of it starting to die out...but I have just a regular, electric push mower.

@@jester9159 no a manual reel/ other reels aren’t required for a Bermuda lawn. They just produce a different result, with a shorter cut. You can use your current mower and have great results!

I’d consider looking into a metal wand, with TeeJet tips! You may want to add a pressure regulator as well? Just depends on how custom you want to get, but there are some videos by other guys that are pretty detailed!

Since you are discussing Bermuda and St. Augustine, will Bermuda take over St.,Augustine or vice-versa? I like the look of Bermuda. What is a good shade grass? I have a huge tree in my back yard. Thanks for your help.
@donslawns13 жыл бұрын
The answer depends on many factors, but in general- Bermuda is more dominant. St. Augustine is more shade tolerant than most varieties of Bermuda though.

Would you recommend tilling a portion of the bad area and then fertilize and seed? Pre-emergent along with weed and feed or Pre-emergent and fertilizer. I ask a lot of questions because I have screwed up at times.

I live 10 miles inland in Southern California. So I see a few summer days over 100. A few years ago, it got up to 112 and 117 one week. I have Bermuda for front lawn and my neighbor has St. Augustine. I keep it at about 1" tall. Although I fertilize and weed, mine rarely looks awesome. Most of the time, it looks blah. Conversely, my neighbor's St. Augustine looks stellar year-round. And it looks even better when he fertilizes. His hasn't been de-thatched in 20+ years, so he needs to do that because the thatching is really thick. I view Bermuda as a invasive weed. I hate it. I'd love to get rid of it ... but you never really get rid of it. So the next house I get, I will grow St. Augustine (presuming there isn't already Bermuda there). I tried Marathon in the back yard, but our summers are just too hot for it. Also, the Bermuda that I thought I killed ended up re-growing and taking over the Marathon. Fuggin' Bermuda!!!
@donslawns13 жыл бұрын
#1- your neighbor shouldn’t dethatch his st. aug! #2- I have many days over 100 in summer, and the Bermuda does great! Maybe you need to adjust your watering schedule? Thanks for watching!

@donslawns14 ай бұрын
Depends on your daily temps, and how much sunlight you’ll be getting daily. The spring will be better, since the days will be growing in length and temp. In average it takes 30-45 days for Bermuda seed to germinate
@roberthoward94823 жыл бұрын
Great video all around. If you seeded with Bermuda overtop the St. Augustine which one would win? Perhaps I needed to buy St. Augustine sod to lay down instead of trying to have Bermuda grow in the areas needing attention.
@donslawns13 жыл бұрын
I think the Bermuda would win in the long run! If you already have well established st aug, sod is the ticket!
@downsouthlouisiana2 жыл бұрын
I've done this before in Texas. We use Bermuda to fill in until the St. Augustine takes off. The St. Augustine wins because it will shade the Bermuda. The St Augustine is so much taller.

Man I live in California, riverside county and it gets pretty darn hot over here. But how well does bermuda does with winter? You mentioned dormant, does that mean it turns brown?
