For me, the most satisfying way to explain it is: "Firstly, look for the most restraining move White can make. 1. Qd7 gives Black only one square: 1...Ka2. There is now no second move which delivers mate, but the form begins to appear, as it would from a stone mason half way through carving a figure. Is there another first move that restricts the Black King to only one square? There is: 1. Qe6. Black must play 1...Ka4 Now here comes the delivery of beauty: what move, however unfamiliar as a queen move in a mating net, ends the game? 2. Qa6. And there's the transcendental moment - the kick of beauty. With 2. Qa6 the Q and K combine in a way I haven't seen before, to cover all Black's flight squares. And the game is over, the King is dead." For me breath-taking. Not because it was difficult to predict, but because the novel form of the combined control by White's K and Q provokes some sort of adrenalin rush for me, an appreciation of beauty. And the sadness is, if I had more experience I wouldn't be surprised and get that rush. Like a drug addict I would need a more extreme hit of the unexpected to get the same rush. But a lot of the pleasure of it for me is that though I didn't solve it as a puzzle, I appreciated the heck out of it as a solution. The joy of it didn't come from the intellectual effort, but the aesthetic recognition.

It'd be good to show the reasoning that leads to the right move, rather than just randomly guess moves and see if they work. Here, White has to account for the two responses 1. ...Ka2 or 1. ...Ka4. The options are: (a) Give the queen access to both b2 and b4, but this is not possible (b) Give the queen access to both b2 and a6, but this is not possible (c) Give the queen access to b2 while preventing 1. ... Ka4, but this is not possible (d) Give the queen access to either b4 or a6 while preventing Ka2, and Qe6 is the one move that achieves this.
@michaeledwards22517 ай бұрын
I viewed the problem as 1. Assume the white king is still 2. The black king can move to a2 or a4. 3. How to mate with queen on a4 or a2. If the black king moves to a2, the White Queen has to be on b2, requiring 3 moves to get there. 4. Mate on a4. White Queen on a6. 5. How to move the Queen to a6. either d3 or e6. 6. Only e6 prevents Black king to a2.
@teambellavsteamalice5 ай бұрын
Maybe not just show what the solution is, but teach how to get there? If the king moves, you won't get a mate in two. If the king doesn't move, black can move to a2 or a4. On a2, the only mating square is b2 On a4, you can mate on b4 or a6. You can look for a square to threaten both b2 and b4/a6, but you can't reach any. So you need to prevent the king from moving to either a2 or a4 AND threaten the other mate. That leads you to look for the a2-g8 diagonal and either b4 or a6, which gives the answer Qe6, Ka4, Qa6.
@ChessFinalzero5 ай бұрын
but i explained in the video didn't just show the solution i showed it after explaining why each move don't work and the reasoning right what did i do
@HolySoliDeoGloria5 ай бұрын
You're correct. This is the specific thought process. The video was good and did explain the solution, but didn't explain the reasoning that you have to go through to get to the solution.
@frankschmidt982124 күн бұрын
I don't know the solution and am trying to solve it myself without a video. First I imagine where the white queen is when the black king goes to a4. The best square for the queen in this case would be the square a6. How can the white queen get to a6 and at the same time take the square b1 from the king and threaten checkmate? Do you see it? That's right, I think the white queen has to go to e6. No matter what Black moves now, he will be checkmated.
@ChessFinalzero24 күн бұрын
@tottenvillelegend8266 ай бұрын
The solution is Qe6. This prevents the black king from escaping to a2. All of the squares for the black king are cut off except for a4. So Black has to play …Ka4 and White finishes the game with Qa6#.
@ChessFinalzero5 ай бұрын
That's right well done 🤜

On seeing the board for some moments, it's obvious that White cannot deliver checkmate when Black King goes in either direction. Hence we have to stop one of the flight (escaping) sqaures of Black King. On a closer look of board, it's seen that White cannot mate in 2 if Black king goes to a2 square. Hence the key to this puzzle is preventing Black King to go to that sqaure. Qg2, Qh3, Qe6 are options but first two can't deliver mate if King goes to Ka4. Hence Qe6 is the key move.

This is one of those puzzles that has little to no application in chess. There is no reason why this mate would need to get out in two moves, and in all likelyhood black will resign the moment the board is down to a king and queen vs a king (if not even earlier). A fun challenge but very limited application.
@Tenshi_Sora2 ай бұрын
Another solution is queen to e3 then depending if king goes to a2 or a4, queen will go to c1 or c5 and that is also a mate in 2
@ChessFinalzero2 ай бұрын
Only Qe6
@MrDkgio5 ай бұрын
Cannot be a king move, that would take ages to regain opposition. Therefore must be a queen move, it must also limit where black king moves to, thus Qe6 this limits black to Ka4, the mate is obvious from there. I don’t think I would have seen that 2 move mate across the board, but would be an easy if less elegant win.

There is a simple way to solve this. Clearly white has to move the queen. Now the black king will go either to a2 or a4. With the king on those squares how do you checkmate. Q a6 mates in the king is on a4 so now how to get the queen to the a6. There are 3 moves Qh6 Qe6 and Qf1. Now Qe6 cuts off the king from going to a2 so that is move 1. Now king to a4 and Qa6 mate. It aint that hard if you start with blacks only 2 possible moves.

The key to such puzzles, and indeed often in 'real' chess, when looking for a mating net is to focus on the King's escape squares - so the obvious first candidate moves are Qh2, Qg2 and Qe6. Thinking that way there are only three options to look at in this puzzle and it is quickly solved.
