Phil’s middle part is also the hardest to harmonize. The lead, tenor, and bass parts typically have easier patterns to follow. Jimmy Fortune is one of the top tenors ever, but I have to say the distinctive sound they had with Lew DeWitt just doesn’t have that same inimitable blend now. Thanks for the post, the live performances are always my favorites.

I remember when the lights came on at Wrigley...the first thing I thought was, "Well, the Statlers will have to re-write that song!" A few weeks later, they played the version with "When they put a dome on Wrigley Field..." and I laughed, because that was the way I'd figured they'd write it. :)

Love the song but gauging from today's values,... He's going home to her soon
@Quickdraw111110 жыл бұрын
So... the idea is that when certain things happen then he (the singer) will come back to his girlfriend/wife? Okay, in the original song he says "when the lights come on at Wrigley Field I'll be coming home to you". It is now fact that in 1988 the lights did indeed "come on at Wrigley Field" (the song was released in 1981). Therefore, he lied. How do I know he has lied and did not return to his girlfriend? Because now he has changed the condition to "when they put a dome on Wrigley Field, I'll be coming home to you". And therefore, no matter what, he will apparently just conviently change things whenever the original things in his song happen. I know it is just a song, but still...

Quickdrwaw1111: When the song came out in 1981, there were no lights at Wrigley Field. When lights were installed at Wrigley Field, the song was rewritten to say "When they put a dome at Wrigley Field," I'll be coming home to you.
@Quickdraw11117 жыл бұрын
@ Allen Booth: Yes, I know that the song was rewritten to adjust for the change from lights to a dome at Wrigley Field. However, you are missing the point of my previous post. I was talking about the STORY of the song and the fact that the character in the song lied about returning to his girlfriend/wife if a certain condition happened. And it turned out that the certain condition DID INDEED end up happening. When that conditioned happened (the lights coming on at Wrigley Field) then the character in the song was proven to be a LIAR, because he now has changed the condition from "when the lights come on at Wrigley Field" to that of "When they put a DOME on Wrigley Field". Therefore, why did he ever make any specific conditions to return to his girlfriend/wife if he wasn't going to keep his promise to return to her when a condition was met? Yes, I am smart enough to know it was just a song, but I am just making a point that the character in the song lied when he claimed that if a condition was met then he would return to his girlfriend (or wife or whatever she was to him). He lied and didn't keep his word.
