Sad, and lots more mothers fell the same way. My Daddy, and 3 uncles served in WWIII, 3 cousins (that I know of) served in Vietnam, and all came back. Thank God. However 1 cousin could not take basic training, his mind couldn't handle it. (this was the draft) His father that had addopted this son of his wife had to go get him.

At the Memorial Day service this year in church the pastor's wife sang this song. The entire church broke down, the entire congregation was in tears and fell apart. The pastor dismissed the service early that day. God bless the unknown names of all the men and women and families that sacrificed so much for us.

I've seen the Vietnam Memorial wall when it came to our town..I couldn't serve in the Military due to health reasons..Had 2 family members that did...One made it home one didn't..Point is when the wall came to town i went to see it..I can say honestly had a weird feeling come over me..Hard to expaling..Hat goes off to all military

I spent 10 years Active Duty Army, retired from the National Guard. One of the highlights of my career was spent with Armed Forces Police in Washington DC. The night before The Wall was dedicated, my partner and I escorted marching units and bands, to the area around the Capital area. We were actually asked to lead the parade, but we were dead on our feet by then. There are two names, from my small hometown in NE Ohio on the Wall.

My son is active duty with 23 years of service. Visiting the Vietnam Memorial when he is in D.C. is always something he does. I told him about friends I lost in a place so far away and never realized the impact it would have on his life. It is one of the reasons he joined the Armed Forces.

Before I met and married the man who was my everything, I volunteered with the 'Traveling Wall' when it came to where I lived. The people who came ranged from Vietnam vets looking for their mates to families who wanted to see the name of their son, father, brother or boyfriend. The impact of those men and women who were overcome with emotion will always be with me. My husband and I had been married about 15 years when the Traveling Wall came to our small town --- Admittedly I was nervous how it would affect my husband --- He served 3 tours in Vietnam, been injured was awarded Silver and Bronze stars and 3 Purple Hearts --- But didn't consider what he did as unusual --- Yet I knew the memories of those battles were still inside him when he'd awake from nightmares I cannot begin to imagine. When we got to the Wall he located one name that meant a lot to him -- He touched the name and tears fell. He looked at me and said of all the men he knew other there -- this one young man was the one who shouldn't have died and certainly not so young --- He was only 18. My husband said he was like a little brother to him --- Even with a weapon in his hand, he still looked like he should have been headed to play baseball --- not fight in a war. This song is the most perfect tribute to all the men and women who have been sent to war --- Some never coming home and some coming home, forever changed. Now it seems we're on the precipice of WWIII and I fear that the only thing we have learned, despite all of technological advances, is how to kill and destroy more efficiently. We never seem to learn to value life --- We're incredible adaptive and resilient creatures --- But also very frail and so easy to be destroyed............. And we just never seem to learn.........

In 2016 I was in DC with 23 WW2 vets on the honor flight (top 10 events in my life). We got to the Vietnam Wall, one WW2 vets searched out and found his brothers name on the wall. The 92 year old sat quietly on the back of the bus the rest of the trip, he didn't give a shit about the spread of communism in vietnam (even though we were all anti communists) Herb just wanted his brother back. What a powerful song.

Harold, Lew and Phil are several years older than Don and they had to wait until Don finished high school before he could join the band. All four sing lead but Don handled the majority. Lewis was the unofficial leader as well as their musical director. When Lew had to step down because of his health many thought it might be the end for the Statler's. Jimmy Fortune joined as tenor and he didn't try to replace Lewis but added his own identity and personality and the quartet carried on. They had been slumping on the charts and Jimmy wrote a couple of songs that the Statler's took to #1 and they were back on top. Lew DeWitt is sadly missed but his songs and voice will always be with us.

Lew, Phil and Harold were only six to seven years older than Don. Lew was born in 1938, followed by Phil and Harold, both born in 1939, and Don came along in 1945. Don was 15 when he joined the Statlers in 1960. Lew's replacement, Jimmy fortune, was born in 1955.

I remember getting off the school bus and later watching the News with Walter Cronkite. The daily death totals, year to date deaths, total deaths, draft numbers, etc. would be at the bottom of the screen. They would show the jungle, tanks, bombings, shootings, and it was beyond brutal. Soldiers came back unpopular, spit on, unemployable, and cast outs! Thanks Jane Fonda for your help! IMO, its been a downhill side for America since then. I deeply, from my heart, appreciate this song for the men and women who served in that ugly war. They were short changed absolutely. Today, when I see a hat or patch, I thank them for their service, they nearly always tear up bc they are being acknowledged for their sacrifice. They say how it certainly was done back then! Jimmy, God gave you an amazing song to share. So thankful you went to jam with Lew all those years ago!

When the Statlers hired Jimmy to replace Lew he told them that until they decide retire he would be part of the group. He was just a young guy at the time. He was there when the other three retired and they did their final concert.
