Roberto fought everyone in their prime and was not scared to fight guys that were much bigger than him ( Hearns, Hagler) whereas some of floyd's biggest fights were against past prime fighters such as De La Hoya and Cotto. Duran fought a very fan friendly whereas floyd fights a boring style of fight. Duran gave ppl money whereas floyd mocks and laughs at those that have less than him. For these and other reasons is why Duran is regarded as one of the all time greats and floyd gets all the negative feed back. Race has no role here, get real.

It's always about race. Get out of your feeling you sound like a little girl. Floyd beat all of your paper champions and you can't stand it. Floyd gets negative feedback from all of you haters. When pacman agreed to testing beat his next opponent. The only other thing he could do to not fight him is be greedy and want more than half the money. When your both undefeated going into a fight like that. It should be down the middle period not no 40/60 split. He tried to negotiate a 45/55 Mayweather wasn't haven't it. Their for he ducked him until he perfected his defense and pac man was out of his prime. Smart move but cowardly.. Floyd's a legend yes but the goat he'll never be... every legend knows to be the best, you fight the best,at their best to be proclaimed the best.. it's sad because I liked floyd until he pulled that.. lost all respect for the brother.

Hagler was a beast, but let's not forget some things. 1. Hagler fought duran, who was a natural lightweight, and couldn't knock him out. Duran stood toe to toe. Hagler won decisively, but he didn't dominate. In fact the middle rounds were very evenly contested with some give and tske from both men. 2. Hagler fought Leonard, who was retired for five years, no warm up fight, coming off rehab for his drug addiction, AND and at middleweight, and didn't out a scratch on him. The only top tier fighters Hagler straight up won besides the Duran fight was Hearne and John "the beast" Mugabe. Hagler stayed at middleweight his whole career, which is CRAZY discipline to do, but he all other top tier fighters moved weight classes to fight. I think Floyd definitely would have held his own against Hagler in more ways than one. The top fighters that didnt get tired (Duran and Leonard who knew how to bide time), he didn't damage. The topic fighters who weren't well conditioned (Hearne, Mugabe) he ended up knocking out. We all know Floyd is too smart and too conditioned.

Aaron Pryor was phenomenal no doubt but when compared to the other greats he would of come up short, easy way to gage him against them would be to ask yourself if Alexis Arguello another great in his own right would of lasted 10 rounds against Duran, Leonard, Hearns or Hagler, if you know anything about boxing, your answer should be no, some of you may know that Aaron Pryor beat Tommy Hearns (16 years old) in 1976 while they were amateurs and it was a pretty good fight although Pryor's pressure was too much for Hearns a very young Amateur at the time that hadn't yet peaked in Skill, Speed, Reflexes and more importantly his 1 punch KO Power, Hearns was wobbled a couple of times but took Pryor's punch very well and Aaron Pryor was already a seasoned Amateur and to my observation basically displayed close to the same speed and skills as when he fought Alexis Arguello, Duran's constant pressure would of probably KOed him from the 10th round on, Leonard perfectly balanced skills would of won by UD or KO in the last few rounds, Hagler constant pressure and the best chin in the history of his division would of won by KO by the 8th round but Tommy Hearns of 1981 on although he had lost to Aaron Pryor in 1976 would of KOed Pryor in 4 or less rounds, Aaron Pryor who had peaked early in his career before 1980 would of had the same exact problem Duran had against Hearns, they were fighters that had very good chins but would get hit a lot same thing was the problem with Hagler but he had a one of a kind chin, now to finalize with the self proclaimed TBE Floyd Mayweather jr he would of lost to them all, all of them are eons better than Marcos Maidana, the 1st group of the pressure smothering kind would be Duran, Pryor and Hagler these 3 were superior to Marcos Maidana in every way faster, more accurate and had stamina for well past the 15 round fights that were the norm in that era, the 2nd group would be Leonard and Hearns more of the boxer types extremely fast, Leonard had the perfect balance of skills good chin, very fast hands, excellent footwork, a true tactician and a constant boxer offensive master, Hearns excellent boxer, incredible jab, he would put his glove in your line of sight constantly even when he wasn't jabbing and when you didn't expect it here came the laser guided nuke straight with a comfortable pillow so you could sleep well, it's was a site to behold to see Duran who has a chin that far exceeded what most boxers would only hope to have, being put to sleep by Hearns freakish power straight, Duran who is a beast actually gets up but was stopped, he actually put him to sleep for a few seconds, Hearns again because of his reach speed and power would of put Mayweather jr to sleep early, Hearns never had an Elite chin but Floyd Mayweather jr didn't even have an elite punch in his original weight class 20 years ago which was several lower than 147lbs

Leonard boxed him in the second fight. Leonard fought him in the first. You don’t fight Roberto Duran. The only person who fought Duran and won was Hearns, and he won due to his height, speed, reach and the single most devastating right hand I’ve ever seen in 30 plus years of watching boxing. That punch was like watching someone get hit by a car. Duran was out before he hit the deck. I’d never ever thought I’d see Duran on his face unconscious but it happened. If anyone wants to know how to throw a right hand, watch that KO. That was as picture perfect a right hand as you’ll ever see. I still cringe when I see it and I’ve seen it 100s of times. Durans head must be out tungsten. How his jaw wasnt broken let alone detached from his head is a miracle. Box him however and you’ll maybe get a win. Lucky Ray was a phenomenal boxer and hand the fastest hands and feet in any era. Shit he was fast.

+Dontae's Boxing Nation Good job all around. A question was asked by you to S. Ray in regards to the difference in the reaction of the public towards R.Duran and F. Mayweather, Ray answered that question very politically, On the other hand there may be another answer to the question away from politics, there is racism in the spanish/latino communities make no mistake about it, I am a black man who was born in a latino country and I can tell you there is racism amongs the latinos towards us. If and when in doubt take a trip down to Miami and just observe the latino businesses where you find so much as even one single black employee. I have been over looked by latinos until they heard me speak spanish, to their relieve I have been told that they thought that I was black, it is almost funny cause I then have to school them on the fact that Yes I am black. If it had been Ray acting like Duran back in those days, Ray would have been hated just like Floyd is today.
@nycinstyle
@nycinstyle 8 жыл бұрын
+FREE-OBO I think that the difference between Duran gaining fan appeal by his bravado and threatening, belittling opponents, etc., and living the high life and Mayweather not so much was due to their fighting styles (Duran very aggressive always looking to "kill you"" and Mayweather beating you with incredible talent and boxing skills normally by decision in his big fights). In addition, the fact that Floyd has a poor history unfortunately with disputes he had with women, the public rightfully looks down on any guy who would physically harm a woman. Mr. Money Mayweather constantly "flaunting his incredible wealth" never helps you to be liked by the public, either. Both Mayweather and Duran are fantastic boxers. Pound for pound two of the best. I would put both of them within the top 10 - 20 or so P4P best fighters ever. Duran certainly within the top 10. S.R.R. still tops the list, BTW, in my opinion. Some idiots (too many) are still prejudiced and would not like and downgrade a person (or fighters, etc.) because of his/her color, but percentage wise when looking at the population not too many. Many heroes in sports and idols in music, show business, etc., are African American today, let alone remember so is the president of the USA. When you or any one else runs into a prejudiced fool be thankful you are not a moron like he is. Those types are still around , but hopefully will be dying out and leaving this world very soon. D.B.N., GREAT JOB ON THIS INTERVIEW. I met Leonard in Atlantic City when I was at a Frank Fletcher bout when I was a teenager. Mr. Leonard was gracious and really nice. A very cool guy. Leonard was also a more exciting boxer than Floyd, IMO. A big reason for why Leonard had the public's adoration and Floyd not as much. The guy was not afraid to trade when he had to. He had the heart of a lion. Battling back to stop Hearns in fight #1 stopping him late in that bout, standing in there and trading with Roberto, even trading with Marvin when he had to late in that fight. SRL was fantastic. People loved watching him box and his style and personality outside the ring gained him even more fans. Lastly, as far as Floyd goes, wait about 5 -10 years or so when his accomplishments outshine his foolish behavior outside the ring. He will be talked about and thought of as a legend, one of the all time greats in boxing.

I read your comment, you pointed out things that I was not wanting to see, yes F.M.'s behavior can be called the catalyst for the dislike, I thank you for reminding me of things that I had not even considered. I do believe the Sugar man would have beaten F.M. I like your comment, it came out almost as a fairly intelligent sports analysis. Keep up the good work, you are few and far between.

+FREE-OBO Yeah, you have to respect Leonard as an all time great in boxing. I would say he is the fighter of the decade in the 1980's particularly given his wins over Benitez (even though technically fall of 1979), Duran, Hearns, and Hagler. He fought all of his bouts against all his opponents in such a spectacular fashion. There were several other great boxers in the 1980's, including Tyson of course. But for my money if I had to choose one guy as being the boxer of the decade in the 1980's, it would be Leonard. And this is coming from a huge Roberto Duran fan. Fifteen years old and being a huge fan of Roberto for years already, I hated Leonard when he fought Duran in those two 1980 bouts. Duran is still my favorite, but Leonard won me over with his charm and grace when talking with him outside the ring a couple of years later in Atlantic City in 1982. A real nice guy. And his boxing talent and skills proved to me there is no doubt - he is one of the best. (Yeah he (Leonard) would have beaten Mayweather). Just too big and too sharp of a puncher for Mayweather to handle. At his best, Mayweather was a jr. lightweight (super featherweight), in my opinion. The best ever, I think at that weight. A few guys like Chavez, Arguello and Sandy Saddler are right there close behind him at super featherweight. IMO, anyway.

Point well taken, your opinion on this would be a hard one to debate, I like what I hear from your comments, I was in the Hagler gym in the late 70s to early 80s, I have been around boxing since the late 60s, yet none of that makes me an authority on the sport, one's personality has a place in this business of opinions and you have it. I give recognition were there is due, why? because I am a the beginning of the second stage in life and I am taking it all in, I am recognizing reality over desire, it is what it is not what I would want it to be, its why I complement you. I take notice of how you show respect in your comment, the PC has given us all a wonderful learning ant teaching tool, I intend to use it.

+Roger Martinez He didn't have to wait for Duran to get fat. The second fight took place only a few months after the first one. If Duran let his weight sky-rocket in so short a time before he started training for the rematch, he had no one to blame for that but himself. Don't blame Leonard for Duran's attitude. Also remember, Duran was only a few points behind Leonard on the scorecards before he quit. He still had plenty of time to win that fight. He just got frustrated because things weren't going his way.

The Duran rematch was a perfect example of getting in someone’s head. Physically Leonard barely touched him. But he riled up Duran so much, Roberto blew a gasket, running rings around him, taunting him, sticking his tongue out,……Roberto, a man’s man and machismo personified couldn’t believe what he was seeing and quit. No one had ever treated Duran that way. Most fighters were terrified of him. And for good reason. He was a monster in his day that a lot of modern boxing fans miss out on. Duran had a granite chin but had one of the best defences of all time. He way he would make you miss a punch with a slight turn of the head was incredible. As thoroughly as he beat Leonard in the first fight, Leonard fought the wrong fight. Leonard’s pride for the better of him. He thought he could’ve outfight and put macho Duran. Big mistake. No one did that. When he boxed….it went the other way. I am blessed to have lived in a time I saw all these fights growing up not long after they happened and some live. We will never see an era like that again in boxing. Truly the golden age.

No shame in quitting against Leonard, but Duran prided himself on his toughness and bravery - so that's why it was so shocking when he said 'No Mas'. It was totally out of character. But Duran was a fiercely independent guy, who did his own thing; so if he had had enough, then he was gonna walk out. Duran could've strung it out to the final round, so in a sense retiring was a braver decision.

Dontae love your interviews. But please quit trying to race bait. Leonard was way more popular than Duran. When Duran quit 99 out of 100 people called him a punk. 30 years later you ask Leonard why some people gave him shit when Duran quit. There are always people making stupid statements. To conclude that racism was behind it is silly, Dundee had a lot of power in boxing and Leonard got favorable treatment and that irritated many people. It's not Leonards fault but it's still irritating. Look at the score cards in Leonards fights. He would win 14 out of 15 rounds on all three judges score cards. So some people speculated Duran was paid to quit. And Leonard was rightfully pissed at Duran for not just taking his ass whippin. Stop finding racism where it doesn't exist!
