i would like an analysis on the song played during the climax. Why Wirt's potatoes and molasses was sung in latin? what's up with the symbolism of "run/pray/hide tiny seed?"
@Donteatacowman7 жыл бұрын
I can maybe do that, but to be honest, I think it's just because Latin gives things a serious/mystical quality. Greg's bridge is definitely more analyzable! And it's a bit more difficult because there's no official lyric page for it. Looking at what others have said and listening to it myself, here are the lyrics: Grow, tiny seed, you are gone to the tree. Rise 'till your leaves fill the sky, Until your sighs fill the air in the night. Lift your mighty limbs, and give praise to the fire. So first of all, there's no run/pray/hide (unless I'm missing/forgetting something, so let me know if I am!) Over the Garden Wall is brilliant at taking benign imagery (deer, plants, sleep) and turning them into something menacing. Even though Greg's voice actor is singing here, I think it's inarguable that the tiny seed is Greg himself while becoming an edelwood. The seed loses its identity and substance as it grows into an adult tree--the seed's not going to stay intact throughout the sprouting process, and Greg's not going to stay intact once he becomes an edelwood. It's chilling how the song (in an emotional minor chord no less) discards Greg like all he's worth is being the seed of an edelwood--probably the Beast's influence on the song. "Rise" is pretty self-explanatory: the tree growing to become a towering trunk and leaves. "Until your sighs fill the air in the night" is less transparent. I'd guess that it's referring to how trees "exhale" out oxygen and "inhale" carbon dioxide, making the air breathable for the rest of us. If that's true, the song's continuing to turn Greg into something useful for the Beast as opposed to an individual. The song's also not pretending that this is a painless process for Greg. "Lift your mighty limbs"--tree branches are called "limbs," but so are human arms and legs, so it has a double meaning: the tree's growing and stretching out its limbs to sprout leaves, but it's also Greg religiously raising his arms to "give praise to the fire." The tree's (and thus Greg's) whole reason for being created, existing, and eventually being cut down is to fuel the fire in the lantern. There's a religious fervor underneath these lines. tl;dr: the Beast is literally farming Greg for the purpose of harvesting and the song encourages the acceptance and worship of this.
@mmmhhm7 жыл бұрын
Donteatacowman Ah, thank you for answering! Yeah, when I saw the lyrics, I think they were written by youtube community, so they were run/hide/pray. (imo, it makes the song even creepier.) But I do disagree on Wirt's song only done in latin for its atmospheric purposes. As you pointed out, the series creators are VERY detailed oriented. (That bit with the door handle? I wouldn't even notice, but to the creators, it was a big world building problem.)
@oatsoss85047 жыл бұрын
Donteatacowman I feel like the sighs part is more the trees and their limbs creaking in the night with the wind, so I think it means they want him to grow as big and old as possible to get even more fuel from his tree

Ever noticed how the Edelwood trees are hollow? We see it best with the one the Woodsman chopped up in the first episode. The trunk is completely hollow and only the branches can be harvested for oil. Must be a way to show that the Beast's victims literally become empty shells of who they once were before being fed to the lantern. (Also if the Beast's made of Edelwood like he seems to be, he might also be literally hollow inside)
@handsomegiraffe7 жыл бұрын
You are right. The beast is hollow or rather he has a bunch holes in him. You can see what the beast looks like when the old woodsman shines the lantern on the beast for a few frames (better to just search for a screenshot on the internet).

Isn't the beast made of faces tho?

I thought the facial features of the faces on him were made of holes. Also, his arms do not have faces on them, rather 'black marks' (looks like holes to me). Therefore, both are correct, he is made of holes and faces.
@voicelessglottalfricative65675 жыл бұрын
Hes hollow inside because his soul is in the lantern and that's why he makes people that grieve over a loves ones death in the unknown chop Edelwood to fuel the lantern to "keep their soul alive"

"Sometimes the scariest thing is to go home and face your problems" Is the woodsman had gone home to face that he lost his daughter, he'd known she was actually still there (This frustrates me sorry--)
@littledrummergirl_194 жыл бұрын
I think that’s kind of the point though - he didn’t know that (or even if) his daughter was still alive, let alone safe at home. So the thought of going home not knowing if he was going to find her there alive and well was terrifying for him, not knowing that she was probably safe and well the whole time - but if he’d faced his fear of the unknown in terms of what he would find when he went home he might have uncovered the beast’s lies. I think that might have been Wirt’s point there ☺️

I can relate to Wirt. I play clarinet, have a half sibling (actually three), and find reality a little scary and hard to face. I speculate that Enoch the Cat may be a Church grim. In some folklore it is believed that the soul of the first person buried in the cemetery will have to stay there for all eternity and help guide other souls to the afterlife. Because no one wanted to be an escort instead of passing to the afterlife, they would bury an animal first. It would usually be a black dog, but have been different species of church grimes as well. It is very likely that Enoch the Cat is the Pottsfield church grim.

Ah yes! Another one! xD Lol ever since I joined the OtGW fandom, I've been thinking about the lyric "Loveliest Lies of All" from the song Into the Unknown. Weeeell, because I was bored I made up theories about what 'loveliest lies' meant. And here's my thought: I think that the sentence 'loveliest lies of all' is referring to hope/optimism. I mean, for example... when you're lost in the Unknown with nowhere to go you'll eventually gave up or at least have a mindset that you can't go home. But then... you decided to have hope and optimism. Sometimes having optimism and hope is like lying to yourself. You know you're not going home, but with hope you make up a lie about it. "if dreams can't come true, why not pretend?" But even though it's a lie, isn't it nice to think that you're going home? Isn't that just... lovely? XDDDD hahaha I hope you understand what I'm saying (I'm bad at explaining things lol) I'm just so bored I had to comment this somewhere to at least cure some of it haha xDDDDD

Later in the episode, when Larry gets unburied, the inhabitants say "You haven't changed a thing", and right after that the big pumpkin dude asks to Wirt if he's going to stay, and then he says "Well, you will come back eventually". I think Pottsfield is a village where people continue living after they die and their whole bodies are decomposed and only their skeleton is left.

He was wearing a cloak VERY similar to wirt, the eyes are the same and they have the same ears too. Just the old guys are a little smaller

That was my thought to it’s pretty dark when you think about it 😮

7:08 114: you can see the beast in the lantern if you look closely. That’s most likely why the woodsman began to tear up in the scene directly after

Enoch being a black cat is so cool. They're seen as mysterious and magical, shape shifters, and can bring spiritual enlightenment. Enoch takes care of the people of Pottsfield and is there as a guide and someone the people look to.

thanks for this awesome vid! I do have another fact for the show, in chapter 9 of the comics the old man of the mountains makes an appearance to greg; im p sure hes a known figure and that it was also inspired by this film of the same name: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHa1eJSwq9iDeNk (the old man was a giant) There was a Betty Boop short featuring the old man of the mountains too and the start was kinda similar to the comics.

It's so weird that you say that, because I s2g I got a response from Jim Campbell (who drew that issue) when he posted some in-progress comic art! me: I LUV that Greg on the lower left. That is officially my favourite Greg.Also holy crap are we getting an Old Man of the Mountain comic?! officialangryjim: Sorta.... it's not the face that fell off the cliff in New Hampshire. I'm guessing that's what you're thinking of. this is a different old man. Ha. me: No, I'd never heard of that! I was thinking of the Betty Boop/Cab Calloway short. :D Thanks for responding! officialangryjim: Oh! Whoops. Yeah this is unrelated. officialangryjim.tumblr.com/post/154125555564/i-finally-finished-the-art-for-issue-9-hey-you (You gotta log in and see the post on your dashboard to see replies, unfortunately, because tumblr code is an enigma. Jim's been willing to respond to fans like me so try and shoot him a message if you're interested!)

Donteatacowman Yikes my bad! I shouldve said it was an assumption, the similarities were too strong to ignore, bc an old man of the mountains who was also a giant? anyways so the betty boop old man wasnt it but I'll check on that other one yep. Thanks for the reply and info!

11:07 I always wondered if the queen of the clouds was acc The Beast making Greg perceive him that way, this would also mean the whole dream was being controlled by The Beast aswel
