Throughout the show, everything seems to be getting colder as time goes on. Even places like the mill were covered in snow at the end. This could be showing how hypothermia is setting in while they are in the river, or just that they are getting close to death.
@Donteatacowman7 жыл бұрын
Yes! It's hard to tell seasons in the first episode, but by Pottsfield we see that the series takes place mid-autumn around harvest season. We see signs throughout the series that we're progressing into winter (from more obvious stuff like the frogs going into hibernation in the mud to more subtle things like some of the song lyrics). By the last few episodes, we're mid-winter. The series was originally planned so that Wirt and Greg would return home around Christmas, with no one having known where they'd been in the last few months. I like the hypothermia explanation though, and winter definitely represents death in the series.

What blows my mind is that at 6:25 the audience was probably meant to misinterpret that dancing figure as the Woodsman's daughter indicating it was her soul in the lantern (which is what I originally thought seeing that scene), but if you look closely and pause when the figure is either facing the camera or has its back to it, you can faintly see The Beast's antlers! @johndallas50417 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that’s actually correct. I have an idea that a core theme through out the entire show is to try and mislead the audience to be scared of one thing when in reality they either shouldn’t be scared at all or should be scared of something else. Kind of symbolizing a fear of the UNKNOWN. Well we’re made to think that the turtles might actually have bad/evil beast like properties because the dog turns in some way into the beast when he eats it. However, if you look closely at the turtle that the dog spits up it has a black shell with black legs, tail, and head and has a piece of candy STUCK to it. The candy sticks to it because that turtle is covered in the black oil from the trees used to power the lantern. That candy is also the reason the dog eats the turtle in the first place as made clear by the fact that even when it’s a beast it still only cares for getting candy. The dog spits out the turtle, candy, aaand a little bit of black oil before it returns to normal. It’s foreshadowing the evil associated with the tree oil and the lantern in general. It also doubles as a set up to again try and mislead you through out the show to think back on the turtles and think of them as somehow related to the beast. Bbbbbut the difference is that every black turtle you see after that has a black shell but dark green legs, tail, and head!!! They make you think when you see the turtles in auntie whispers house and she eats them that she must be evil because you are suppose to think eating the turtles makes you evil. But they don’t and that’s why auntie whispers turns out not to be evil! This took me forever to figure out but I still don’t know if any one else noticed it haha

Was thinking today about how the unknown is partly defined as stories that have been forgotten and aren't told. So if Greg and Wirt had given into the edelwood, then in the "real world," they would have become one of those forgotten/untold stories. So those bad ending AUs where Wirt and Greg are found drowned are not actually accurate? The cop was the last person to see them alive. Presumably in a bad end, people would have looked for them AROUND the pond but wouldn't have found evidence. Their real stories would have been unknown. Maybe that was obvious but I'm only thinking about it in 2020 so 🤷 I also don't know where else to put these theories nowadays except the comments of my own KZbin video haha :(

the moon remains a half moon throughout the whole series, despite the passage of several days in the Unknown. the half moon represents transition, making the Unknown a place of "crossing over" from life to death. the Unknown is highly implied to be a sort of purgatory or limbo several times. pottsfield is pretty much the place of resting, where all it's residents are skeletons who only come out during what looks to be the harvest to celebrate like they were alive. wirt being referred to as a "pilgrim" implies that he is journeying into a place where he feels accepted, which fits his personality.

@@Orion_TheyThem yes! I was going to say this 😄 It's because a lot of 70s kids became nostalgic about the 70s during the 90s, similarly to how 80s and 90s kids are nostalgic about the 80s and 90s today and so a lot of the fashion and vintage memorabilia are popular again 🙂

I hadn't noticed that, but just going by the choice in clothes and the speech patterns of the kids, I presumed the 90s. Something that got easily in my head for such a long time, is that at some particular time in the series, Wirt said he was angry at Greg and at his ''stupid father'' meaning that they are half-brothers somehow. I got myself into what really happened to his father and how Wirt felt it or if this could be a reason of why he started writing poems and being so depressed

I took the "age appropriate drinks" line to be a satirical nod to censorship of animation and content policy within family animation, especially within an organisation like Cartoon Network - no doubt the creators had all sorts of decisions about what to, and what not to include, in this story, and the level of threat they could "get away with" (which it turns out is A LOT haha). We might wonder as viewers, if, as they are coming into adult hood, further down the line, they might one day transgressively and illegally experiment with adult drinks, but they could never show this, hence the joke. We're sort of in on what life choices may or may not be ahead for them.

I don't think Greg and Wirt being hearing distance from the mill in the final episode is necessarily evidence of the boys having walked in circles for the entire series. It makes more sense to think that Wirt and Beatrice were actively looking for the Beast and Greg, and found them by the mill. It'd make sense for the Beast to never be too far from the mill, since that's where the woodsman, and therefore the lantern, his soul, lives

After Greg gives “her” his wish, wakes up, and walks off with the Beast, the Beast says something along the lines of “we have a deal, don’t we?” The “deal” being the wish that Greg asked the lady for in his dream. Ok but /what do the black turtles mean/?! They show up way too often to be a coincidence!
@Donteatacowman7 жыл бұрын
That's the one big mystery of the show that I have no hint or answer for. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Good characters are seen abusing the turtles. Auntie Whispers eats turtles and is OK (though mangling it in the process and not eating the shell), but the dog swallowed a turtle whole and turned into a monster because of it. The turtles show up in the comics a lot too but it doesn't give us much of a clue as to why.
@redgeoblaze37527 жыл бұрын
I think the turtles were supposed to be red herrings meant to distract the audience, and make the truth more surprising. We assume Auntie Whispers is evil because she eats the turtles, when we're meant to believe that the turtle made the dog evil. It adds to the feeling that you can't assume anything to be true in the unknown. It's representative of the paranoia the main characters are feeling in the unknown, and how farfetched assumptions can lead to undue fear. It's essentially Chapter two, but with the audience being the ones to overreact, and freak out.

One that I feel some people miss is that Enoch is not a pumpkin, but a giant maypole, being puppeteered from inside. We actually see the puppeteer at the very beginning and very end of the show. He is the black cat we see driving a cart full of pumpkins to Potsfield and at the end of the show, we see him emerge from his maypole puppet again. Additionally, the cart is pulled by Turkeys, because it is e timely based on a 19th century greetings card depicting a black cat driving a turkey cart of pumpkins. A common theme in the show, which is featured elsewhere, such as the pumpkin fellow driving his watermelon car, which is also taken directly from a vintage greetings card.

McLaughlin also means "son/child of Lachlann" in Irish, Lachlann being a medieval Irish term to depict a faraway place such as the Otherworld--the realm of spirits. I'm guessing the creators intended it to be a double entendre, considering the ferryboat (again a metaphor to Charon ferrying the dead) is literally spiriting them through the Unknown.

In one episode Beatrice comments on how Wirt always does what he is told, during the duration of this episode Wirt walks about with his shoe untied until Beatrice commands him to tie it in the episode's final scenes. When Wirt tells Beatrice's family "no" to their request for him to wait out the storm, it is an example of his character arc. He now acts independently despite whether or not someone else tells him to do otherwise.. this new found independence is also shown in the final episode during his confrontation with the beast. The beast tells him his brother cannot leave, then offers him the lantern. Wirt instinctively begins to do as he is told, but then we see the change in personality once more. After considering for a moment he denies the Beasts request. Even as the beast tries to convince him other wise, he holds on to his new found confidence, and stands firm in his decision. This is the purpose of the comment made to Beatrice's mother, or rather why it was written in the story, to showcase Wirt's change in character. The comment he made in regards to how he was never much good to his brother, helps to show that he is aware of his past mistakes thus giving the proper foundation for a change in character.. as one cannot fix one's problems until one is aware and accepting one has problems. Previously when Beatrice had teased him about being too obedient, he was in denial of it, now he seems aware and in acceptance of this amongst other issues, and ready to face them for his brother. This comment is also made I'm sure as an attempt to retract/discredit his precious comments about how Greg is always messing up and that he and his dad are the crux of Wirt's problems... character arc!
@HolyKhaaaaan7 жыл бұрын
He may simply have been admitting that his fear and hesitance had let him and Greg down. Notice how bold he gets with the Beast, and how he decisively picks up Greg and the frog, and eventually plucks up the courage to invite Sarah to his house to listen to that tape. His character's beginning to change.

One of my favorite parts of this series is the tavern keeper's song about the beast. She not only says he seeks lost souls, and that he turns them into the edelwood trees, but that it's HIS lantern to burn. Like the woodsman said in the first episode, everyone has one to burn. She also says he who holds the lantern must be the beast, which kind of reveals that his soul is the one in the lantern which is why she would think whoever holds it must be the beast because why would he want someone else to carry his soul.

Some references you missed that I noticed was the cloud city scene was a big ol' to Walt Disneys Alice's Wonderlandby Laugh-o-Gram Studios from 1923. Laugh-o-Gram Studios was what Walt made before he made Disney! There's the gloved hand pointing at the reception committee, the band of animals the sign saying "Welcome Greg!" and was as a lion closely resembling the ones in the short. Its also colored in mostly in greens and reds, which might be a nod to cartoon shorts like Betty Boops "Poor Cinderella" and Raggedy Anne's "Suddenly It's Spring" And in the Tavern, the tavern keeper resembles Betty Boop in appearance, and the gnome looking guy's movements might be a nod to Cab Calloway's dancing, who was featured in 3 betty boop shorts. And I think the Potatoes and Molasses might be inspired by the "Animal Crackers In My Soup" song sung by Shirley Temple.(there's a video of the Alice's Wonderland short on youtube btw!)
