Ok I admit the way they pulled up this episode is amazing! I'm still upset Roku didn't get to be a mentor, but I'm at least glad they didn't turn him into an ass, and exagerating his nice and playful nature makes him stand out from the other avatars.

Roku is my favorite character in the show and his conversation with Aang was kinda lame. They gave his lines to Kyoshi

@@tmac731 I'm still really upset he got sidelined like that. He's one of the most important characters in the show especially in book 1. Kyoshi doesn't have the same connection he has with Aang and I really hope they give him more if the show continue.

I understand them saying Aang can talk to past lives infront of their staute but the cartoon made it seem like he had to world hard to talk to them or the past avatar can come like a force ghost. Aang had a time limit to talk to Roku in the show. Idk how to feel about this live action it’s nice but unnecessary changes

The stolen totem of Koh's was something from the comics. There are a lot of elements of the comics that they brought over into the show. I also liked the one-to-one shots that they did with the cartoon like Aang's escape. I cried a lot during this episode cuz it was heart wrenching. I knew Gyatso wasn't going to be there for Aang but it still hurt a little. I watched a KZbin video reviewing the series and they had a theory that I agree with. They said that Gyatso was there because he had unfinished business with Aang. That business was that he wanted Aang to know that the downfall of the airbenders was not his fault. As soon as Aang left, Gyatso could go to a better place.

my one issue I have with zuko’s back story is the line they had him say where he says the plan is terrible. Zuko never made a comment about the plan’s quality, he advocated for the soldiers’ lives which is so different and why Ozai is such a villain in the cartoon

I do agree with someone on TikTok like IDK what it is with Netflix and 8 episodes but shows like this need to not be rushed and summarized into 8 episodes while the cartoon has like 20+ episodes. They need to let the plot breathe.

It's simply not sustainable, bugdet wise, to have these big productions going on for more than 10 sometimes 12 episodes. Furthermore let's be honest in book one there was a lot of filler or sometimes ripetitive stuff. They could have had one or two more episodes? Yes, but this doesn't change the fact you can't simply have three or more episode in one (this would mean have unnaturally visibly separate chapters in one episode that would mess up the pace), you gotta combine storyline and decide what to keep, and I think they did a good job with that, all the importants bits are there and the changes in combining plots make sense, a person who doesn't know the cartoon would't notice them.

@@hika_ariel yeah...since the news came out that they're renewed for season/book 2 and 3, I hope that the budget will be bigger so they can add a few more episodes. And about Mai...I'm not bodyshaming BUT yeah the actress has the voice and vibe down but just like...idk it just don't sit right with me especially as someone who grew up on the animated show. Like the first time I watch the show, I was like 5 years old.

We are all nostalgic about it so very much with a set of fixated ideas on how things should be or look, but I think just because her face is a bit wider it doesn't compromise the character. I wanna see how they write her, I wanna see how she fights. I wanna see her be apathetic. That's what makes Mai, Mai. Non her chin

I must say that I´m not a fan of how they handle the relationship between characters. Too early and doesnt feel deserved at some points. I dont like how Ozai is portrayed as at least a little bit caring/proud of zuko and the worst of all: they cut out the cool roku vs fire benders scene :(

I wouldn’t agree on Ozai part, Ozai’s character wasn’t fully undisclosed in the cartoon. He was narcissistic, power hungry and probably phycopathic, but he did care about his children in a way - he did until they’d fail. Azula is a great comparison, also psychotic and not caring, but then we see that she has some parts that care, it’s just their moral compass is different due to their narcissism, upbringing and whatever. Here he also does the decisions that show he doesn’t actually care, he “talked” 2 times and as it went not like he wanted he burned his son, banished him, also he clearly does things so that his kids fight to win, he even states in next episode “SPOILER ALERT” that if Zuko dies, he’s just weak. It’s actually cool we see Ozai’s character being more explored. Edit: since I’ve seen cruel fathers like Ozai, it actually makes him even more realistic. Cruel narcissists also have moments when you think: maybe they actually care - and that is what scary about them. He is not a Disney villain who is like an open book singing a song of how evil he is. We see how evil he is through his actions.

You didn't pay attention to the cartoon then In season 3 Ozai welcomes him home and praises him since he believed zuko killed the avatar Yes he may be cruel but he's capable of being proud as long as you're loyal to the fire nation and show Strength and ruthlessness

Ozai basically never appeared untill the final episode besides the flash back which is crazy becuase he is the main villian. I wellcome any more backstory with him
