@@vertexrikers True, but even more so with a German. I'm an American, and we have a 5-10 minute frame of lateness acceptability. After that you're just rude. But for a German, if you're late. It's very rude, from what I understand from several sources.
@vertexrikers
@vertexrikers 5 жыл бұрын
@@matthias66 Aye! 1 minute early is just right on time =) Not rules, just my personal opinion: up to 5 minutes late = owes me an apology 10 = should have an excuse 15 = should notify me with a new ETA and have a _good_ excuse Any delay above that = I'll try to reach out and ask if there's a problem - I'd start to worry and if nothing serious happened, I'd be pissed ;D But it depends on the distance, too. Can't expect someone to be precisely on time from a ~100km drive. Tho in that case you'd plan differently and wouldn't set a precise time. Not sure if it's really a german thing - rather feels like common sense.

This is an interesting assertion. It is more like English. A big mistake the French usually make is to use "love" for everything. Anglophones are pretty much afraid of the word "love" and so you even see passionate lovers saying "I like you" - - just to be sure ! One reason that everything French is illicit for anglophones is that the French are prone to confusing them by saying that they "love" them.

From an American subscriber who never comments (but always "likes") because you always get sooooo many comments (How do you read them all?), I just wanted to say my wife and I are visiting Germany & Austria for the 2nd time (3rd if you count changing planes at Berlin Tegel last year ... which was a nightmare experience) in a couple of months and, since continue to read more and more about World War II which is always really, really depressing (except that we won), I've been watching a lot of your videos to pick up a more positive vibe about the German people. And you're the person I've come to watch. That's an impossibly tall order for you to counteract but you do a fantastic job. You're really, really, really good. We had a couple of off-putting encounters in Berlin the last time we visited. I'm part German myself (ancestors came to America in the 17/1800's ... a lot from Bacharach back in the day) and my wife is Jewish. We have visited and will visit more concentration camps to pay our respects as we have done also in Poland and the Czech Republic. I just find you so likable/lovable/intelligent/soulful/hilarious/imaginative/creative/kind ... you get the idea, all positives ... And your English, like that of many native German speakers, is excellent, with so little if any of an accent, a credit to the German educational system (Sweden's is very good in this regard, also). In the New York area I'd say 25-50% of the people have a 'foreign' accent so if you have any kind of 'international' accent people I think tend to take less notice than if you're from a different part of the U.S., like the South, or Canada. Any time you and Eric want to emigrate to the U.S., we'd love to have you. All the best (and continued success on your channel that really rocks) to you and Eric and your family.

In Filipino, there's a couple of expressions that are used to express one's feeling on someone: Love in Filipino is "mahal" or "ibig." "Mahal" is also cognate to Malaysian/Indonesian/Bruneisian "mahal" as it can also mean "expensive," hence the Filipino phrase "mahal ang magmahal" (it is expensive to love someone). Minamahal kita - literally "I (do) love (to) you; eg. I love you". But like English this is very context-based. Iniibig kita - also "I love you". Sinasamba kita - "I worship you" (similar in context with the "vergöttern" but more understood like "You're more than the heavens to me.") Gusto kita - "I like you" but "gusto" is understood in a possessive context (like towards an object). Quite distinct in our language is that there is no real sense of personal possession to one's love or feelings - it is always something that's "directed" to someone coming from you. Like, you're your giving your love to someone but it is not exactly yours. It's hard to explain or translate though… this might have to do with dating customs in the southeast Asian region.

After many years of being single, I finally met someone and she is from Germany (I am from the U.S.). This was while I was researching for my move abroad in 2021. During these times of chatting, I started finding many strong commonalities that we share and decided that I wanted to get to know her better as friends. But, she has to be the most difficult person I have ever met in my life to get to know; even after a couple of years of correspondence. Simple non-intrusive questions would get no answer and then other times it is quite the opposite. I am also always there to support & provide her comfort when she had some dilemma or was despondent. Last Fall, things were beginning to move in such a very positive direction. Then suddenly out of the blue, during the holidays, she became extremely distant. Yet, she is still willing to maintain contact with me. So I am trying my best to deal with it because I truly like her. Question? I know different cultures have their different ways, but do you know of any German women who are like what I described or is she just an anomaly? Thank you!

I try not to use the word "love" to describe something I'm feeling. It doesn't make sense for a word like this to have a rose-tinted connotation around it given the mentality of the person who _uses_ it, and what their mentality _should_ be. The words "I love you" _should_ mean, "I cannot be happy if you're not happy. That which causes _you_ misery, by extension, also causes _me_ misery." But all too often, the words "I love you" mean, "I expect something _from_ you and I expect you to have no objection to _giving_ it to me since I have conveyed it with this particular word." I don't know if it began with this, or at what point it acquired it, but it has taken on this connotation of expectation that makes the person these words are spoken to feel trapped and imposed upon.

Those first few phrases you mentioned sound like those expressed in the English phrase "I'm falling for you", that phrase in English basically expresses a strong infatuation (crush) that is blossoming into love. The tricky part with English is that the same parsing can mean very different things depending on context "I love pizza" or "I love you" to a friend is a light expression of this but the words "I love you" in an intimate context are not as light as your video makes out that's actually a big thing to say in English, big enough that your romantic partner will probably remember the date this first happens for life, in an intimate context this really is taken literally.

Yet more that Swedish and German has in common.. "Över mina öron förälskad i dig..." - "Over my ears in love with you" - förälskad - verliebt..

I noticed when you said three, you held up a thumb and two fingers. In English you would hold up three finger, the index, middle, and ring. The thumb holds the pinky down. In the movie Inglourious Basterds, the undercover British colonel in the German bar, ordered 3 drinks and held up 3 fingers, giving himself away to the Gestapo Major.

Great! This got me to thinking about why Americans say I'm on cloud nine? After looking into it a little, apparently we Americans have not always used Cloud nine. Cloud seven was sometimes used in America in the 1930's and 40's. Also, occasionally the phrase "cloud thirty nine" has been used. Cloud nine has become more common place, likely due to the use of the phrase in popular music since the 1960's. Why the numerical reference? The best explanation I have seen is that the numbers are likely considered to be lucky. Perhaps Germans use "Cloud seven", as seven is known to be a "lucky" number. In America we have the phrases "Seventh heaven", and "lucky number seven", among others. Another explanation of why seven was used previously, and nine has become popular is that perhaps people have tried to "one up", each other. "If you are on cloud seven, then I am on cloud 8". "Well if your on cloud 8 then I am on cloud 9"...………..That sort of thing. I like her explanation of why Germans use seven instead of nine; I'm not saying I buy it, but it was cleaver and cheeky.

For hispanic asians, we could totally give the best of both worlds. "Omg this is a once in a lifetime chance!" non-stop romance and caring. By the way if you Germans cant afford expensive education and you want that same quality or you want your children to grow as parent loving and God loving you can always have them in our prestigious schools or national public schools . Your children could meet the love of their life. Both cultures love the same solemn piano music. You get affordable, quality and positive directions plus you can spend vacation with our warm beaches and warm people from time to time. Friends in the old world, definitely friends in the new world :-)

That's super interesting, because in Russian we have absolutely the same (literally, word to word!) expressions: to have a butterflies in a belly, 7th cloud, to "godify" someone, flying (fliegen), bang (like if a big feeling of a pure love comes unexpectedly). That's very interesting! Probably, that's because our empress 300 years ago was a German?😁
