I'm a firm believer that the elderly don't get enough blame for causing road incidents. People and insurance companies always blame young "inexperienced" drivers for problems, but I have yet to see anyone under 70 driving the wrong way around a roundabout, or doing 40 mph on a 65 mph highway, or side swipe someone because they cant see over their hood or check their blind spots.

The point of having that distance between you and the car ahead of you is to allow other cars free lateral movement from lane to lane. If someone changes lanes in front of you, then things are working as intended. The alternative is either lateral gridlock (a rolling roadblock), or an actual traffic jam. The people changing lanes in front of you aren't necessarily being jackasses, they are simply working on driving somewhere, just like you.

Unfortunately, here in the good ol' US of A there really is no effective safeguard against motorists driving in the left lane. SOME states do have laws against it but they're not enforced anywhere near enough. Even worse, there is no nationally instituted driver training program. I call out left lane huggers as the main cause of highway traffic. Once that person moves over a lane traffic continues to flow. Some people just don't know that the left lane is a passing lane, which basically means 'use it to pass, and when you're done with it, give it back or return to the right lane.' Some drivers have a righteous or selfish mentality, they seem to think that because they go a few numbers above the limit they can "move in" to the left lane. I like to think of the left lane as something borrowed. When you're done with it give it back.

Similar, semi truck going 58.3 mph in the left lane passing a semi going 58.1 mph in the right lane (the speed limit being 75, mind you), a maneuver that takes about 5 minutes. I think there should be a law that if you are in the left lane and not restricted by traffic in front, you must either be doing within 5 MPH of the speed limit, or be going at least 5 MPH faster than the vehicle you are overtaking. Violators get big ticket. Maybe only applicable to semis, they are always the one doing this - they should only be in the left lane if they have a very good reason to be.

@aestheticoutlaws5259

People keep forgetting one thing. If you see traffic slowing down (or stopping) in front of you, you shouldn't wait for the last moment to stand on the brake. Start slowing down gradually without using brakes. If you do use brakes, people behind you will likely stomp them much harder than you. If you start slowing down like I just said, you will prevent a traffic jam from getting worse. Also, it's better to drive at 2 mph, than to stop. Why? Because people behind you will stop, start doing stuff on their phones and since people like to wait before taking off again, everyone will suffer because of that, because that will create a larger traffic jam. If, in that test you've shown, one person saw what is going on 5 cars in front of him and started slowing down without stepping on the brakes (or using minimal force to slow down), the jam would start to disappear. TL;DR - look in front of you, start slowing down slowly (don't stomp on the brake at the last second) and as long as it's possible - keep moving (DO NOT STOP UNLESS IT'S COMPLETELY NECESSARY)

Unfortunately in most situations this leads to morons tailgating me or cutting me off as if I was the problem (and not just reacting to a problem I see a half mile ahead). People are just inconsiderate of others. They either want to drive 20 above the speed limit at all times swerving all over the highway, or they do 60-63 in a 65 until they see a truck limited at 65 attempting to pass them (ie me) and then speed up to 65 for a little bit only to slow down again once I get behind them. @Shamur Stewart I've driven on the open road many times and honestly trucks in the left lane isn't so big a problem that I would complain about it. Yeah it happens, but a lot less than just plain old slow cars in the left lane. Besides, when you're driving on a 2-lane road and both lanes are taken by trucks side by side, don't get mad at the truck on the left, get mad at the truck on the right for not backing off and letting the truck on the left pass him. Trucks have governors set at different speeds and the truck on the left just happens to have one set a tiny bit higher than the one on the right. All he wants to do is pass the sob and get out of your way.

@Shamur Stewart Yeah I agree, all slower traffic including trucks need to stay to the right if they ain't passing someone. I'm just tryna make it clear that truck drivers need to pass other trucks too. Let me give you an example. I don't regularly drive trucks, but I did once rent a big International model Penske truck to drive from Chicago to Atlanta. It had a limiter set to 70 mph. So naturally I just put my foot to the floor and treat it like cruise control. Every now and then I'd come across a semi doing like 69.5 mph lol. I don't wanna ride the rest of my trip trying to match this assholes speed behind him. So I'd check my sideview mirror to assure no other cars are coming for a good long ways, let em all pass me. When the coast is hella clear I'll move over and slowly but surely overtake this guy. When I clear his truck I immediately move back over, there's a line of 12 angry cars behind me. WTF ELSE CAN I DO?!?!

Just a small side note: Building roundabouts everywhere won't magically eliminate traffic jams...people need to learn how to drive on them as well, I've been in several traffic jams caused by idiots who don't know how to navigate these strange circular intersections, cutting in, not abiding to the right of way, and not following the "first one to the roundabout, goes in the roundabout" rule, they just block out 2-4 roads by not letting anyone on the roundabout, they just keep coming for an eternity.

I've watched traffic in nyc when i go there and almost all jams are created by people who don't have any sense of patience, not only do they almost cause accidents each time but they also slow everything down. The funny thing is i have learned to stay in the same lane you watch everyone change lanes to the lane thats moving not realizing that once they get their that lane will stop and the one they were in will continue normally lol. I have told people driving with me this and every-time they listen to me we always get through faster than if they switched lanes. The same thing goes when their is a accident most of the time if you go the other route, you will also get their around the same times s people who stayed really i find it fascinating especially since people never seem to realize this no matter how many times they have to wait longer lmao. I guess that means people don't really pay attention. Although i do want a self driving car.. If only to see how long it takes before someone runs me over.

Shiv_McShankston Yess this happened to me on tuesday. Three lane motorway, one lorry driver decides to overtake the other because he cant handle the lorry going 1 second slower than him. But he takes an absolute eternity to overtake the lorry driver because 1st lorry driver is doing 50mph,-l and hes doing 51mph. So a natural persons reaction is seeing as we cant use the middle lane to overtake, lets use the right lane. But we cant do that either. Because four tossers are all going the same speed as the lorry and wont go into the middle or left lane while im doing 70mph. The traffic was so congested because of them. And finally when the lorry managed to over take, majority of drivers undertook the four dickheads in the right lane. If people just followed the rules of the road there wouldnt be an issue. Left lane is the lane we should all be in, until we have to overtake.

Ill give the lorry drivers a free pass because i know hgvs have restricted speed, but the moron in the overtake lane was doing 60mph in the overtake lane. And he would not move over into the middle lane. You wasn’t present but when i managed to finally get to get pass these morons, the road infront of us was actually an open road with minimal vehicles because the morons were holding up all the traffic with their deliberate slow driving. And then when i kept looking in my rear view mirror as i drove away, most drivers undertook him because he refused to go into the middle or left lane where he should be. Stop defending slow drivers. If drivers all did the speed limit and or/stick to the rules of the road there would hardly be any congestion.

@Jeff Dick yes and no. The shooting comparison doesn't fit. If the drivers licence system would be the same as here in Germany definitely many idiotic drivers wouldn't be allowed to drive or would drive better in the US. You can get your licence with only 16, right? Here, to drive independently on your own you need to be 18 and surpass a strict test. A friend of mine failed last week because he drove too fast through a crossing where was right before left - so he lost 180€ and has to pay it again. it's also pretty expensive here with 1500€ in total

V12ish that’s a good point, but i’d argue that biking or walking is still definitely an option as long as it’s not too long of a distance. also, i think a lot of people who drive are the only person in their car, so they could consider another option. obviously, there are always going to be situations where it makes more sense to drive, especially if you have to move a lot of big or heavy stuff around.

Lafv US suburbs are awfully designed, they make it impossible for most people to walk or cycle anywhere, not only that, but cycling isn’t safe in the US because of the wide roads that make drivers go fast. Walking often isn’t possible as there are no pavements. They wonder why they are so fat and miserable... perhaps they need to rethink whether living in giant detached homes miles from any amenities, and having to drive everywhere is really ‘freedom’

Its so frustrating when the government taxes things that are good like income and wealth when they could get that same tax revenue from taxing vehicles (traffic) more instead. I'm not arguing for higher taxes here. Just for not taxing a single good thing until every bad thing has been taxed into oblivion FIRST.

If you are in the left lane, you should be passing the cars in the right lane. If there are no cars in the right lane, you should be in the right lane. Any more than 2 lanes, You should be in any of the middle lanes but try to stay as far right as you can without being in the rightmost lane.

Most places have set their speed limits intentionally low in order to create more violations and therefore more ticket revenue. Raise the speed limits and force bad, slow drivers to get training before they are allowed back on the road. Also, legalize lane filtering for motorcycles so that bikes don't add to congestion (it's also MUCH safer for the motorcyclists).
@arturoescorcia
@arturoescorcia 5 жыл бұрын
Finally, scrolled too much for this comment. States DO set their speed limits too low to get revenue from traffic violations not only this is shady but also dangerous, slow speeds also give a false sense of security, drivers tend to get more distracted and thus more prone to accidents.
@psychlops924
@psychlops924 5 жыл бұрын
While I agree speed limits are too low, there are actual a lot of reasons they are set so low. I’d recommend checking out the Wheelhouse about speed limits if you haven’t already. Could you explaining lane filtering for motorcycles to me? I haven’t heard of that before.
@arturoescorcia
@arturoescorcia 5 жыл бұрын
@@psychlops924 Actually there's numerous research showing that most people auto-regulate their own speed very accurately according to visibility, weather conditions and personal eye- hand coordination. Driving slow doesn't reduce the amount of traffic accidents, it makes them less probable to be fatal.
@rosen380
@rosen380 5 жыл бұрын
On my commute, the speed limit is 55 and generally if you are going under around 70-75 in good weather conditions and not caught doing something else (phone, no seatbelt, no insurance, etc), the cop hiding off to the side will do nothing. Lets say the speed limit was raised to 65-- are people going to expect to be able to drive 80-85 now, or will law enforcement still target 70-75 as the rough line?
@TommyJonesProductions
@TommyJonesProductions 5 жыл бұрын
Lane filtering is when motorcyclists protect themselves from being rear-ended in heavy traffic by moving between the lanes of cars. It's legal in most of the world, except for 49 of the United States. The primary reason for the insanely low speed limits is ticket revenue.

But It does aggravate me when I see cars in the passing Lane driving side-by-side, especially here in Connecticut where we have some two lane highways. If I want to go faster than the car in front of me I get into the left lane I go around them and I get back into the right lane.

In history the best example of the succes of mass transport happend in 1914. The Imperial German Army transported 5 million men to it's borders with Belgium and France, with only 1200 trains. On average a train carried 550 soldiers. The French were dumbstruck by the speed of the German mobilisation.

I remember this one time me and a couple of my buddies were traveling back from indie and there was the most massive traffic jam ever. Like the average speed was like half a mile for all cars in the three lane freeway. The cause? Two construction workers just chilling on the bed of a crawling Silverado while having those massive switch line sign to the right of the three lanes. Absolute assholes if you ask me.
