Loved the analogy to Genesis! And the reference to horse meat here on Earth! I was a brand new missionary in Italy in 1979 when I was conversing with a senior missionary in our group. He mentioned seeing horse meat at the market in town on the Italian island of Sardegna while he was cooking the leanest, reddest looking "hamburger" meat I had ever seen. After we sat down to eat his Shepherd's Pie, he brought up the horse meat again. I told him, "I wonder how horse meat tastes." His response was, "You tell me."

What's funny, sometimes OEM's get this wrong to give the consumer the illusion of off-road capability - particularly for crossover vehicles. Thumbs way up for this vid!!!
@bad_puns Жыл бұрын
the big problem with all this and the reason it gets so confusing is that there are no legal or official definitions or requirements anywhere for what 4x4, 4wd, or awd actually mean. in fact, the sae recommends the use of the term awd to refer to all vehicles that have any sort of system that drives all four wheels, regardless of how that system works. because there are no official definitions and there are so many ways to make a system that drives all wheels the question should not be "what's the difference between awd and 4wd?" but rather "how does the awd system work on this particular vehicle, and what are its pros and cons in relation to the systems on other awd vehicles?". the sticker on the back of the vehicle is just marketing and tells you nothing about how the drivetrain actually works.

Since full time 4WD is less common than part time, focus on part time 4WD. Part time 4WD is usually completely mechanical and almost always has a dual range transfer case. 2WD - transfer case isn't sending power to the front wheels, 4WD - transfer case is sending power to all wheels (depending on the surface and what the axle diffs are doing). Most conventional AWD systems are front wheel drive based and use a variety of center diffs and ways to control it. When traction is lost, the system will try to send power wherever it needs to go. Most of these FWD based AWD systems have a tough time sending a lot of torque to the rear wheels. Subaru actually has like four different AWD configurations. On my 2002 Outback with a manual transmission, all four wheels are always technically getting power. It has a limited slip center diff and limited slip rear diff. The center diff is called a viscous center diff, its actually filled with liquid silicon and friction plates (similar to a torque converter I suppose). When the plates start spinning at different rates, friction is generated and the silicon viscosity increases by a LOT, forcing the plates to spin at the same speed again. That's how my AWD system's center diff distributes power between the front and rear axle. I will always have about the same amount of power going to both axles when I need it, which is a huge advantage over the simple but ineffective FWD based AWD systems. Mine is purely mechanical, zero electronic parts to fail, and I am guaranteed max power to at least three wheels when needed.
@sethwinnings34236 жыл бұрын
So 4wd is mostly part time and that's where the difference between 4wd and awd come in?

4wd can NOT bias the power front to back AWD CAN bias the power front to back That's the only difference anyone needs to know
@ichkommentiernurkommentare72375 жыл бұрын
There is no real difference, just marketing. Cars that use a permanent all wheel drive system are mostly labeled AWD, while cars with a non permanent system are badged 4WD or 4x4.
@Aaron-co4od5 жыл бұрын
My Infiniti is AWD and the power distribution is 70% to the rear and 30% to the front. I believe that 4x4 is 50% to the front and back. Also as far as I understand, AWD cannot be turned on and off where 4x4 can be switched between 4x2 or 4x4. I am by no means a car guy but these are the things I’ve noticed from having both AWD and 4x4

AWD vs 4WD - A label basically decided by the marketing team based on whether they think their target customer wants something tough and rugged or safe and 'high tech'.
@chubbysumo22306 жыл бұрын
Easy way to keep them apart: AWD means all the wheels are given power from the transmission and transfer case, but they can all spin at different rates. 4WD locks all the tires rotation speed together. You can still get stuck with certain AWD systems, such as Toyota's, since they run an "open" transfer case, and power goes to the wheel with the least traction. Some cars, like Subarus, and GM AWD SUVs and vans are able to at least make sure you have power going to the wheel that has the grip.
