How do Boxer engines work? They have a low center of gravity, they win rallys and they power Porsches! This episode of Science Garage compares the squat boxer engine to it’s tall inline 4 cousin. It uses a reciprocating motion to balance pistons and create power! From Subaru STI’s to Porsches, these low lying dynamos have a special place in the hearts of car fans.
Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.
Some of our best videos ever are coming out soon, stay tuned so you won't miss a thing!

Being in school to become an aircraft mechanic, I've learned boxer engines are extremely prominent in general aviation (Cessna & Piper sized). Almost all small planes use boxers for harmonic balancing, and it makes it easier to pull off and swap cylinders out and rebuild the motors.

@@chrishagemeister7384 karman ghia, type 1 (beetle), type 2 (The bus), type 3 (squareback, fastback, notchback), the VW thing and type 25 (which both come aircooled and watercooled). The stock boxers went from 1200 CC to 1600 cc but now people pull 2.5L CC strokers with massive weber carbs and even turbos. As the comment above...very very successful!!!

Fun fact, some people take those engines, cut them in half, and use them for ultralight airplanes.

I used to work on inline opposing 4 and 6 cylinder engines. The big 6's had a C. I. D. of 560 and all the big 6's had these two (sometimes 4) "tabs" on the crankshaft for counter weights. They didn't always have counter weights, but they all had those "tabs. " The pistons diameter were like cantaloupes. And the wrist pins weren't pressed in or kept in place by snap rings. They had these little aluminum plugs with the cylinder walls at one end ("top" of the plug) and the wrist pin at the other (the plugs "bottom".....and now I think about it, sounds dirty).

Also the general aviation industry is literally all BOXER engines. Excluding Turbojet and turbo props. America produces a significant amount of boxer engines for aircraft all the time

Jonathan W. Perez 5:13 and 5:26 when he was talking about how much room there was under the Subaru hood thanks to the boxer, he instead talked about the boring air filter, and the intercooler, and forgetting about the times when the Spare tire was located there from 1969-1994. that's 25 years of the spare being above the engine for it to not be included in the video.

The Volkswagen Gol (no "f", not Golf) and Voyage when first introduced in Brazil, had the air-cooled flat four Beetle engine front-mounted with the spare tire above it as well. This changed once the Audi sourced water-cooled inline four was fitted.
