I feel like the AP1 vs AP2 argument is a meme and just really a bunch of people coping with their purchase. It's very similar to the 1.6 vs 1.8 Miata arguments. Here are some of the bonuses that you get with an AP2 by giving up that silly 700 rpm and world record title people always like to mention: -More reliability (no valve retainer issues) - Better acceleration -The ability to pass people on the highway without downshifting -Plug and play hondata with turbo support and launch control (post 2006, can funnily enough increase redline of car to 8500 with no changes or damage to engine, high flow cat recommended) -A differential that can take a launch -Stronger transmission with better synchros -traction control (can be fully turned off) -stability control (can be fully turned off) -Better wheel options - Suspension and handling characteristics that while more mild for the track actually let you drive the car more reliably to the limit without being a professional driver -Better resale value (wonder why....) - Better AC - Slightly nicer interior options (AP1 seats better for the track since they have the helmet slot though). -CR variant and CR parts compatibility. Both cars however are somehow overrated and underrated. If you ever get the chance to drive one, take it. I know that the NSX is the flagship but I actually consider the S2000 honda's best car ever made. The NSX might be faster, etc but I will always see it as the very perfect Ferrari clone it was meant to be. The S2000 is unapologetically a Honda and what a Honda has been in racing for decades.
@jimmy-buffettАй бұрын
Owned an AP2 '06 and a '00 NSX after that. Best mod I ever did on the S was dropping the VTEC to 5100 RPMs via Hondata. Totally smoothed out the 4500-6500 range and kept it in VTEC when I shifted. So much about the S and NSX were similar that you can easily tell that they were built by the same company / designer. The joke I tell my S friends about the NSX is that the NSX has all the torque you wish your S had for 4 times the price.

@BabakanoshАй бұрын
@@jimmy-buffett I agree. Did the same to mine and it was welcome change. Some people put it lower but I don't like VTEC engaging in everyday highway driving. @BabakanoshАй бұрын
@@alphatripduce In my opinion if as a buyer, top speed is a focus then the S2K isn't a good platform. A stock S2000 needs too much road to get to their top speed and they, like most cars, become unstable. If you re stabilize the car with aero you will lose the top speed. Sorry to hear about your issues. I've known a few people personally with the same things happening. IME the snap oversteer isn’t as bad as people say. I’ve driven around 30 S2ks on track, of all years and insanity levels, and never experienced snap oversteer. The 2000 was probably the closest to “snap” because the steering ratio was so high, so overcorrections were HUGE overcorrections.
@WallstreetavariceАй бұрын
Keiichi Tsuchiya (the drift king) put it best IMO - he counted from 1 to 10 and sped up to imitate how quickly cars transitioned to oversteer at the limit. The AP1 counts up from 7 to 10 real quick - and he is spot on. The difference between no oversteer and a lot of oversteer is very little when on throttle. On the other hand, it's very balanced during trail braking, where the tail will rotate, but very predictably.

The simple fact is that the S2000 shared absolutely nothing with any other car Honda produced, including the other car built in the same plant, the NSX. It was effectively an engineering exercise to see how far they could push a small sports car, and just about hand built. I don't know how much money Honda lost on each one they produced, but they definitely made the car at a loss, as they also did with the NSX. When the design aged, they couldn't afford to update it because that would have really meant starting the whole project over from scratch. But, damn, while they were building it, it was a hell of a thing. The car was noisy, cramped, it rode hard, and didn't fully come alive until you were absolutely flogging it. Which combined to make it an absolute joy to drive. And it was so well engineered that it was effectively bulletproof. Glad I was able to own and drive one for 10 years.

People rag on the WRX for having a red like at 6k RPM but the torque curve stars at 2.5k and ends at 5.8k RPM. Having that much max torque is really fun. (WRX 2024 owner)

Honda has lost their way and has started to ignore their customer base. No one wants a civic the size and weight of an Accord from less than 8 years ago. Ive been salty since they killed plans to make a Fit Si, literally a HIssy Fit. Mix in that nearly everything they make now is a CVT and I will keep my 8th and 9th gen Civic Si's thank you very much. I test drove a '24 Si and its a great car even if it has gained the middle age weight and the color choices are about as exciting as an insurance workshop. What I wont do is pay an additional 6k in market addendums so the dealership can gouge me. I have been a Honda fanboy for nearly three decades but the last 8 or so years is really testing my love for their brand.
@VBMichael_DАй бұрын
? I don't recall anyone, ever, with common sense and a 3 digit I.Q. deliberately going out to buy a sports car, and having FRONT WHEEL DRIVE as criteria. Makers continue to put out 'performance' cars with V6 engines, front wheel drive, automatic transmissions, that weigh as much as a full sized 4 door sedan of last decade.....and the lot of you 2 digit I.Q.s' not only 1. eat it up. but 2. defend those setups like a 3rd wave feminist defends her hatred of men. Like, wow.

Blame Cafe standards
@middleagedbaldguy6774Ай бұрын
@@waterloo123100 That's what I don't get. My 14" Si gets 40mpg on the highway and sometimes more. My '11 gets the same and even more but its catless so I guess that doesn't count. What leaves me scratching my head is that much of what they do to mitigate emissions cuts the life of the engine. Which is more costly to the environment? 2 MPG less or having to replace the entire vehicle much sooner. If you look at the amount of oil/BTU's it takes to manufacture a car and then deliver it I don't see how the tiny gain in efficiency cancels out the monstrous amount of consumption it takes to produce a brand new vehicle.
@PURENTАй бұрын
@@middleagedbaldguy6774 CAFE law which were lobbied in by automakers is designed by "footprint" which is the size of the car. 2024 CAFE standards for a Honda Fit sized car requires 55 mpg, for a Merc S-Class sized car it's 41 mpg. Naturally the Civic had to get bigger.

I've driven a 2002 AP1 since 2011 and have read or watched just about everything said and written about them. However I feel you did a fantastic job of covering the development, features and pure stoke of driving one. I have never driven a AP2 CR so I can't make a comparison but I have driven several AP2's and in my judgement the AP1 is the car the designers and engineers intended and the AP2 was a somewhat more domesticated version. Anyway, excellent review Cheers.
