@@dxshawn532 I think it's more fun and engaging. I can honestly say that driving a stick shift is worth perhaps 100 hp in terms of daily driving "excitement." To clarify, if I had one car to drive everyday, driving a slow car with a stick feels like I'm driving a much better car than if I was driving the same car with an auto. Like "race to 30" fun. IDK, I don't feel like I'm explaining it very well. My last car was a ~400 HP Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with cam, headers, supercharger, premium gas...and an auto. My current car, a 1.4L Jetta, has only 147 hp and a 6M trans. It is MUCH slower, but I don't notice because I'm having so much fun rowing the gears every day. Maybe for some people it's more "macho," but in my experience only the base-est cars seem to come in sticks (or the most expensive versions of desirable car, i.e. G8 GXP), and I know more girls who *currently* drive stick than guys, because of cars like Corollas and Bugs, "girl cars." My Camaro is an 88 and its auto, most were even 30 years ago.

Like...if you imagine that older cars cost nearly the same back then as new cars now, but they didn't have so much electric and comfort stuff and all the sensors and ECU controlled units and other unnecessary stuff, you can tell why older ones are more reliable. There was a lot less parts to break because of simplicity, plus older cars often have different quality of used materials and they could afford it and still make profit out of it. Now cars don't need to last for ever, 7-10 years is enough, then you can buy new one and you have reliability. But the one who get used one may find himself in huge money pit...because a lot more things that get old and need replacement...just well kept older cars don't brake that much, because there is really not much to break. Just imagine 1 gen Miata...maybe...I don't know...there are silentblocks, also brake pads and...engine, cooling, intake and exhaust? I know there are a lot more stuff, but you get the point. Well...now imagine to maintain new BMW M5 for nearly 30 years with damn dual turbochargers and 3 different cooling ways and with all those ECU's for everything, heated electric seats, adjustable things from center console etc. Also if you would want better materials for reliability and all those comfort stuff...cars would not start from 15-20k or how much it is in America...they could start from 25-35k and most people are good with normal comfort car to get from A to B and they are happy that they didn't pay much and after 10 years they just swap for another one. I personally don't like new cars and would rather buy Datsun 240Z or Charger '69, Plymouth GTX, Hemi Cuda, Challenger '70 or Corvette C1-C7, GTO '65...in our country all of them are very rare and expensive, but 35k couls get you really nice one and it would mean much more for me than any new car in that price category. Even my Jag XJ40 which I got really cheap is damn more exciting than 99% cars on road in the Czech Republic.

While i completely agree with this rationale, i see that absolutely no force on earth can distract a screen slave from that screen. Not even death. So it might actually be more dangerous because kids eyes are still gonna be welded to that screen even while running a stick.

Modern design and car looks is mostly about aerodynamics, and not about costs. The car design is dominated by needs of aerodynamics for highway speeds and gas mileage. Put it this way - how many modern car's could you today recognize from shape alone? It is much harder to do it today than with cars from 1930's - a period of time when cars where sculptured. Modern green laws and high speed needs forced cars to have only few looks-like-a-fish shapes where all differences in designs are mostly "drawn" onto shape. Modern design is just "pick your fish species" and draw a pattern of windows/leds/lights/grill. But all dose differences are literally skin-deep details. Now picture yourself Jaguar E-Type cabrio. That car was truly a beauty and to great extend it's beauty came from its distinctive shape. And that kind of distinction is rare today and was common before. That is what "all modern cars look the same" means.

Modern cars don't need to be difficult to repair. I do soldering boardwork and custom firmware flashes on old game consoles, ts100 soldering iron, and Linux boxes for fun on some weekends. And the only thing more difficult about electronics than engine work is that you can't always legally rip software out of a broken device you own like you could legally rip out an old engine. Look up John Deer fighting farmers, Qualcomm fighting FRAND, and Apple fighting developers with their app store tax. The right to repair electronics is being fought in the courts right now and it shouldn't be rocket science. If I wand to cut and/or paste in new code to my car or phone how is that any different from me cutting and pasting something cars out of a magazine for personal consumption. I ain't hurting no one let me screw with the infotainment system to run how I want! I do understand that consumer tunable driving software scares people, but it could also add new safety features to old cars. Users hooking a raspberry pi like microcomputer to a backup camera would allow users to add basic object identification to 10+ year old backup cameras, I can hear the car warnings now blaring, "object approaches from the left," or, "baby behind you" or you could even hook your brakes and backup camera to a raspberry pi like computer and tell it to prevent you from reversing into a garage door like a few people I know who thought theirs was up. And for many users these car upgrades might only involve basic soldering in a cable or knowing how to use copy paste to flash a firmware or read a tutorial. The only issue is Right To Repair is currently loosing to Software Copywrite laws making this stuff all be in a legal gray area.

@@yufanchen6072 look. I'm a computer enthusiast my self. But I shouldn't need to program a petrol car to make 450hp. If it's an electric car sure. I'd be willing to learn that, but man, tuning computers can be a headache and I would rather mess with the exhaust manifold and a turbo setup than getting into my ecu and doing it all there. That's boring and doesn't feel like I accomplished anything.
@Ephem135 жыл бұрын
@@chocolate_pie6989 Tuning most modern cars is pretty easy. Sure someone has to reverse engineer the software, but once that's done you have a shell program to do the heavy lifting. Basically you do it once for a particular ECU and until they car company changes ECUs you are good to go. Tuning within these various programs is pretty straight forward and produces better results than tuning methods for older cars. I mean you talk about "messing with the exhaust manifold" but what are you really doing to it? Really all you can do with it is replace it with a different one or fabricate one. As for your turbo setup, again it requires replacing or fabricating parts, there is no adjusting it. To add on top of that, it's not like you can just slap radically different parts onto an engine and not adjust fuel delivery, air/fuel ratios, and timing. All that really changed is how we tune for the new parts we have, that's it.
@Ephem135 жыл бұрын
@@yufanchen6072 Only really requires a coder once at that, once they are done you have code that allows some tuning companies programmer to communicate with the ECU and it's smooth sailing from there.

if the sound system in our car stops working, i know its because either a wire came loose, the es100 is powered off/out of power, or, the volumes muted/needs turned up on the phone device thats plugged in... as to how many songs....tens of thousands of songs, and... i dont gotta worry about the problems that come with too many computers.... sure its cool i admit that... as i get older though, i more and more appricate something that "just works" but when it dosnt, you can dig in, with your own hands, and sort it out, without needing to deal with discovering that when, and i kid not, the stock infotanement system blew, it had actually blown the main computer in the car, talking to a dealership one rep said "thats like less then 1% of cases" another laughed and said "whats he been smoking, closer to 15-20 on models using this basic setup, if they blow 3 of the 7-9 ways these can, it can take out the main computer as well, sometimes its not obvious the computer took damage till its put on a diag station that tests it and... "oh, thats not right".... apparently, the shop was able to get him a repaired computer pretty cheap sent his in to have the parts these failures destroy replaced so it could be re-used again, they also recommended one of several better head units that not only were much less of a clusterfuck, didnt have the issues with not being updatable to the latest navigation versions successfully, infact... they just tied into android auto, or whatever apples version is, the one he went with was effectivly a raspberry pie type computer built into a rig that added all the other support that was needed, and supported some interesting custom (including user created) addons, like people building their own amps that fit behind the head unit and are tuned to run the speakers they connected them to properly,(i helped him build a set, actually talked him into upgrading a few of the parts since i know the music he likes to jam to often has nice thumping/driving/etc bass tracks and, well... not so much more output power as, upping the capacity of some caps so they could handle any load throw at them without bottoming out the caps, it sounds great...still sucks it cost him his daily driver for over a month to get it all sorted, mostly because they also replaced a few other parts the HAD to get re-manufactured/rebuilt because the "new" ones are genuinely so unreliable the claimed they would order 50 name brand and at least 10 are failed bad enough a basic MM test will show they are internally shorted, others will seem ok till put under extended load then fail, and, they just didnt trust those parts after how bad the inside of the computer looked(i saw the pictures, solid state caps blown off the pcb..that bad a surge.....) aparently thats not super common but the guys had seen it before and, nobody liked that head unit, turns out all the ones they could in any way justify swapping it for even a cheap alternative they do before cars go up for sale used... gotta ask him what brand/model that was again...i just know, i had to drive his f-ing geo sprint turbo...that was engine swapped to a 13b rotary after his wife blew the stock engine by ignoring the check engine light asking for oil when he was out of town for a month... ok, i wont lie, its fun to drive... just not in the middle of the night in rain so bad its coming from every direction at once, the good thing.....its a geuine beater at that point and, well, i was able to dodge nearly getting into what i later learned from the news, ended up being a 26+ car pileup due to somebody hydroplaning into a semi... i hit the guardrail and just floored it around the mess i saw coming... didnt look back...couldnt safely if i wanted to.. it was that bad out... we ended up getting food then taking a much longer but less traffic strewn way home... way up the columbia river gorge, across the bridge of teh gods, then back down to home in the camas/washougal area... we got called the next day, "dont come in to work, the highways a zoo, and, it seems like the presidents coming in, again, so, just enjoy the day off, paid" when i confirmed that, he said if we went the long way, we would get 3hrs work done before being told to head home for the night... just dont try and head to portland.... we didnt plan to... we fucking ended up all 3 of us, just crashed back out for a few more hours then got togather and went to suncoast and a couple other places, picked up food and went back to my families place, ate, played games... fun times.... seeing the news report "oh, shit, thats what you dodged on your way to get me, good job, that looks bad" 4 lanes of traffic and 2 margins larger then a lane each just packed with cars and such... a jack knifed truck got hit and "belly gutted" by a vehicle what went into it at enough speed... im sure whoever was inside saw a bright flash before the end... now, give me an older car with alot of these newer features installed by some of my computer/car geek friends... and... i could get down with that... but.. i rebuilt a carb once, as i talked to a mechanics class instructor... then realized i put somebodys carb togather... he looked at me... "why, and how..." i laughed "well, i grew up watching people and helping, i had never done a full rebuild from just parts but... for some reason... i did... i was starting to take it apart, and instead, he wanted it kept as the example, and took the one he had used for his example for years apart and showed me how he fucked it up years ago... misthreded a jet and couldnt get it out.. i stared it it.. asked if i could see that... went over to the class next door, waved at the instructor, who...till this, the mechanics instructor didnt like... asked for a tool by description showed him whati was lookin to do.. he said..i got ya one better come over to my toolbox, dude had a tool SPECIFICALLY for removing such mistakes safely, that he had made himself after borrowing one from somebody and seeing its flaws, they ended up getting a patent on it and selling the rights to make things designed based on it to several companies, the tool let us get it out, clear the threads, and even made putting the new ones in alot easier... the machine course instructor is just an oddball who looks angry when hes thinking or mulling something over and comes off as a jerk, really a great dude, the 2 worked togather alot after that including bringing in a joint class that was automotive machine, any skilled machienist can learn it but, there are tricks and things you need to know to do these jobs properly, safely and to last, im just a computer geek whos....stupidly mechanical, and they loved me.... i would swing by to say hi and be thrown ear protection, a face shield and told to "get over here" or "go see if you can help them for a minute"... i enjoied it though... i couldnt stop laughing when a truck they spent weeks trying to get to run reliable turned out to become a non-issue when board waiting on my buddy who moved from student to assistant instructor of the course over the time we had been riding back/forth togather, i decided to swap the insides of the distributor with some off an old mustang that used the same parts, that they were going to do an electronic swap on, when i started it up and revved it.. the fact they had taken the muffler off was quite amusing.. people diving for cover..... he comes running...its the main instructors truck he had almost given up on... "what the hell did you do, how, i spent months trying to get this working" now, f-me if i know what its called but its either a coil or cap inside the distributor can seem ok, but really be almost dead, that was the issue.... once they got the muffler/exaust and timing sorted... it was running great...he decided to take us out to dinner he was so happy.... he drove out to our town to meet us and...decided to get the food to go if we could watch movies and shoot the shit instead of sit around a chinese food place, hes still driving that old ford...he did do an electronic ignition upgrade to it eventually but...only when it started to have the same problem again and... one of his students offered to buy the kit and install it for extra credit, to make up for having caught a parts cleaner on fire....not the way one would expect, but a very amusing way... this genius took a glowing hot piece of metal they had heated to remove all the paint and resedue and dropped it into a parts cleaner... then he closed the lid.. trapping the evaporating parts cleaner.... he then freaked and rather then unplug the cart and roll it out the doors to cool, he tried turning the vent fans on, after opening the lid... the sparks from the fans caused the vapors to catch fire... whole dept closed 1/2 a day and a couple days of cleanup... and everybody re-taking the safety tests... LOL... no real danger of serious harm in this case but... as one of the other instructors said "why did you tell him to put that in the parts cleaner when it was still hot"... turned out, he said "on the parts cleaner", as in, the metal rack under the liquid where it wouldnt have been an issue... still not where anybody i know would have said to put it but... also apparently quite common around the auto shop when they are doing classic car repairs, and they removed the baskets and just put a heavy flat metal plate, for safety and, because it discouraged people from hanging hot stuff in the baskets to cool.. near flamable liquids... mostly... the basket/plate are there for stuff you pull out so it can dry as you put new shit in... not... hot stuff... idiots...)

@@rickywaterman1963 yah. the whole "look i have a supercar" of now is getting a little...much. every where you look you see hondas, toyotas and everything looking like fucking audi s4's, bmw m series and mercedes amg's....but they only have like ...120 hp but look like they go like a supercar. VERY deceiving. it's very poser like.

Ironically, I find that period to have the ugliest cars. 60s-70s was the best two decades for car design imo

@@skyguy1988 REALLY. Back when I saw a Lamborghini Urus, I thought to myself, this looks modern and sporty. This design... Who can afford something like this? Back then when the vehicles still looked normal. And nowadays a VW, Renault, DACIA looks like a URUS. This aggressive design. This wannabe luxury, sport design. It just doesn't look good. And every second car just looks like an AMG, URUS. I hope this trend will end soon

Bro, I just agree with every word you say. to this day I miss the design and approach of developing cars of those times
