had aw11 that sounded kinda like this, its really underwhelming and industrial after awhile, subjectively. my presumption on what causes this is intake and exhaust is fairly muted, but they can't do much to mute the valvetrain sounds so you end up with a mechanic, really gnarly (both in good or bad way subjectively) sewing machine sorta noise when engines behind you but muted like this.. If you listen to Panama by van halen they must've recorded near top of heads that it ends up sounding similar to this, cause likewise that was the one and only time i've heard a countach sound more like a vacuum cleaner then a v12. Credit to this car, other lil mid engine runabouts, Van Halen specifically spent time looking for unique sound and were picky when using the recording for Panama, sooooo i guess some people like it?!? Peugeot show-up in '84 briefly a super fast very cool insane prototype named Peugeot Quasar, i hear it suppose to have a mid-engine derived from Peugeot 205 Turbo - Pikes-Peak in it that should be tested in Group-S WRC rally which should follow after Group-B, but.. since Group-B got banned in '85 so the Group-S along with the Quasar prototype development got ditched.. If that concept would have being completed & produced even in a small limited series to be available.. holly cow ! it featured a manual gearbox, powerful twin turbo engine close to 600 bhp that was raced previously in 205 at Pikes Peak, it had permanent AWD traction, double suspension on all 4 corners, entire body panels +many other parts (like A-arms..etc) made entirely from kevlar reinforced-composites & aluminum for light handling & weight distribution, Lambo-style scissor doors, cool interior and would definitely turn out as a proper street-beast no doubt in my mind..

@Twinspinner Жыл бұрын
@@PlatinumNath it's not "agreed on," it's the actual law.
@PlatinumNath Жыл бұрын
@@Twinspinner Is it? I've read from many that they insisted it's a law like you said, but there's a series of articles and sources that said kei car's 64hp power limit is just a Gentlemen's Agreement just like Japan's sport car power limit of 276hp. Difference that the latter is broken already, but the kei car is questionable. Hagerty's Revelations video addressed this too. Also that the Agreement was made after 1990, so pre-1990 kei cars can actually exceed that power limit, just that no one did it. To add, likelihood of Gentlemen's Agreement means that it's an informal and non binding agreement despite the name. Oh and top of that, iirc Caterham had 1 model in Japan classified as a kei car and while engine size checks out, they make 80hp which would be over the "supposed limit" but it's allowed to be classified as a kei car so that can be an anomaly to contradict too.

These'd be great to mod, eg put a battery in the base, add electric motor wheels, either a little range extender in the front to reclaim the boot and add some power, or a turbo four cylinder in the boot for a lot more, and you'd get an awesome little hybrid electric racecar that's also be very efficient and goes a big distance on a charge and a little fuel.

It's a short track monster, but on bigger courses especially the nurburgring where power plays an important role in lap times it'll lag behind. The Honda Beat in particular suffers the most because its torque figure is incredibly low, like only about two thirds the AZ1 bad and it'll only get in the low to mid 20s for MPG figures on premium fuel. That's a big let down for me since I live in the midwest where it's acceptable for gas stations to charge over a dollar more per gallon of premium over 87 octane whereas closer to the coasts it's only a 20-30 cent difference at least from my traveling experience. The exception being out in the Mojave & salt flats where gas stations are more than 100 miles apart from each other

What blows me away is how much attention these Kei Cars are getting now a days. I remember seeing them in Japan and thinking "One day people in America will want these." And that day is here. Congratulations on the 50th video. (:
@charlesbolton8471 Жыл бұрын
The reason that people in America want them NOW is because they are finally old enough to be legally imported. I can assure you (and all the Japanese automakers) that there were plenty of people who would have bought them new back then if we had been given the opportunity to do so.

They're super little cars. I have one (in red, a Version L with a Mazdaspeed spoiler kit). Some info: Autozam was Mazda's short-lived sub-brand for mostly selling rebadged Suzuki kei cars though they did sell a few larger Mazda-built cars such as the AZ-3 (a.k.a. MX-3). The AZ-1 was originally designed and built at Suzuki which also sold the identical Cara in very small numbers, while Mazda took the bulk of production and stuck on some flair in the form of the Mazdaspeed stuff and the later super-special M2 1015 version. As with the Beat, the AZ-1 was only available with a 5-speed manual. The owner's manual for the car has an illustration for the proper way of entering and exiting the driver's seat. The driver's seat moves but the passenger seat is completely fixed. The car was kept light by the use of plastic body panels, lack of electric accessories (windows, locks, pop-up headlamps), and a manual steering rack. An electric power steering kit and ABS were options but they're very rare. The belt-driven DOHC F6A used here has a cast iron block with semi-closed deck. The tiny IHI turbo spools quickly and starts providing boost around 2200RPM. The rev limiter goes to 9k but power drops off noticeably around 7.5k (peak is at about 6500) so there's not a ton of reason to rev that high in normal use unless you have an upgraded engine. Upgrades were available but not super common, more aimed at the Cappuccino, but some could be fitted here as well. A full upgraded ECM/injector/turbo kit could get around 120HP out of one of these. Some people even overbore the engine to about 800cc. The wheels here used the then-common PCD 114.3 which can make fitting modern aftermarket wheels a challenge. The original brakes on these are solid discs all around, mounted behind the hub. A mod to use PCD 110 wheels and larger, vented brakes from other Suzuki models was available (and possibly fitted from factory in some of the very last AZ-1 models built).
@andywarne9632 жыл бұрын
There is quite a bit of confusion about the origin of these cars. The AZ-1 was not designed nor built by Suzuki although the suspension is mainly taken from the Suzuki Alto and engine is of course Suzuki. The video is correct, the 3 prototypes were built by Mazda. There was an earlier concept car by Suzuki but that was many years prior and didnt have any bearing on the AZ-1 other than the idea. The selected one was then developed into a production car by Hawtal Whiting in Basildon, UK who made the first one using GRP panels instead of the production injection molded panels, and a hand-tooled monocoque. It was tested at MIRA proving ground. The cars were then manufactured for Mazda by Kurata Corp who built a new factory from ground up.
