@@keppozx You just watched a whole video explaining why it's an achievement. It's definitely not a car the actual record calls it a "land vehicle", but it's not just a jet either. It's a fun engineering challenge and it's flashy enough for a Red Bull Stratos style advertising push when the finally go for it which will recoup a lot of the cost.

Better question is, how do you make a car go that fast without killing the driver if the slightest glitch happens. Jessie Combs died trying to break this record. A slight gust of wind, a tiny pebble the size of a pencil eraser, even turning the steering wheel a fraction a degree is all it takes for a disaster to occur.

First many thought you couldn’t fly faster than the speed of sound, it was done and than was doubled. A land vehicle couldn’t do it, then they did it. It takes huge knowledgeable effort and money to do this. A totally committed crew and huge amount of patience. That on top of not getting discouraged with the multiple failures experienced prior to cracking 1000 mph in a land vehicle.

@@lucasvanhamburg4937 Why? The Isreali Defense Force flew a mission up the Bakka Valley some years ago, led by a female Colonel of their Air Force- a half dozen planes, in line behind that female colonel took out 70+% of the Hezbollah air defense systems- at somewhere over the speed of sound and less than a thousand feet from the ground. The medicine says women handle G force better than men- it's a "biological thing"- sorta makes up for all the other superiority myths you've been brought up on, doesn't it?Actually, looking at your name,I suspect you should take up the qualifications of women with Angela Merkel- even if you don't agree with all of her politics, you have to respect her ability; those who haven't aren't much around the Bundestag any more. In Jessi Combs case, she was fully licensed and certified, the car was inspected and cleared by very skilled technicians of the sanctioning body, not the American Eagle team. In her early teens, she was doing things with dirt bikes that boys six to ten years older couldn't- and i rather doubt you could now. I'm not family, and I never met the lady, but I was deeply impressed by what she did, time after time. BTW, it is thought she hit a rock and lost surface contact- there is both the sanctioning bodies report and the County Sheriff's if you want to dig.

I think we need a law that says, any cop who can catch that guy gets to keep the vehicle, though it must be disassembled and sold for parts. And of course the driver gets life in prison. I mean, if he has disturbed the peace of 2.6 billion people for a total of 100 hours each, how else is he going to make up for that beyond being immortal and put into community service for the rest of the lifetime of the Earth?

Thanks for yet another informative and (relatively) in-depth B-2-B on a subject that just doesn't get the attention it deserves. Cheers

We actually had to cut a section of the video talking about that, but in short its a combo of track quality and distance. The problem is those including Craig breedloves (the spirit of America) car (that was disqualified) that he entered into the land speed record car event which means it has to have 4 wheels not 3. The 3 wheeled vehicles now have their own class so unless your vehicle has 4 wheels it can not attain a record in that class of 4 wheeled cars that the thrust SSC holds the record for. The thrusts SSC beat breedloves record anyway because it broke the sound barrier on land first.

I attended an educational show as an HP consultant for scientific calculators on 2012. At that time, the Bloodhound LSR project was being introduced as the SSC. So I took that project as my presentation theme. After thoroughly studying math involved and running several calculations, I arrived at a speed figure of 1058.8 mph if the trial run was performed at 30 degrees Celsius ambient temperature and the 794-meter elevation at Hakskeen Pan. I figured that the combined power available from the jet engine - rocket motor combination amounted to over 100,000 horsepower to overcome the 19-ton drag force exerted over the car body. However, I could not consider the second-order effects stemming from the supersonic shock wave, being that the nonlinear analysis can not be undertaken without the aid of advanced hydrodynamic software.

@@makantahi3731 Indeed ... Just the engineering behind making the solid billets, iirc, from a very carefully controlled alloy; heat treating it; tempering it back; then machining it to insane tolerances, was all a nightmare by itself. Even the rocket motor, which provides the secondary power, ontop of the jet engine, to push it past 830mph, took several iterations. And the twin analogue dials, built by Rolex, just in case of both primary, and secondary, electronic systems fail, took alot of effort to build, as not even the watches that the Apollo astronauts wore were subjected to the same calculated g-forces those two dials will experience at maximum thrust ... imagine building a mechanical watch that can operate with a shock loading of 8g+, abet able to maintain the same precision of timing ... ... that's how difficult building Bloodhound is, and why it has suffered setbacks, and delays, as all the teams involved, are quite literally pushing the envelope, as they are, essentially, building a fighter jet with the express purpose of _not_ taking off, even though it would be travelling, iirc, somewhere between V1, and Vr ...

I remember the Discovery Channel special on the Thrust SSC back in the day. All the struggles, the danger involved. It was very, very hard to pull that off. The driver was a former Royal Air Force pilot if I'm not mistaken, and the project manager was the former driver of the Thrust, which held the world record at the time, getting close to the speed of sound, but not over it.
@nigelft
@nigelft 2 жыл бұрын
Yup ... I'm old enough to remember when Richard Noble smashed the world land speed record in Thrust 2, which I got to see in person, in a vehicle museum, iurc, in Coventry. Aside from that, it was notable for the fact that Jaguar took one of the fastest coupé at the time (XJS ?), and turned it into the world's fastest 'fire engine' (OK, more like a car out fitted with a big enough tank for fire suppression), just in case Thrust 2 crashed ... I still have a vague visually memory of watching it power across the dry lake bed, the mirage effect making it look like it _was_ travelling across water, with a huge 'roosters' tail of dust, right behind it ... When Trust SSC came around, by then he knew he was a touch too old to drive it. Though he was a key figure in the project, even he would say he had a more hands off rôle than portrayed, but given he _did_ practically hold the land speed record for the longest time, he appreciated actually being bought on-board. As for the driver of Thrust SSC, if memory recalls, not only was he an retired RAF Squadron Leader (the equivalent to a Major in both the Army, and Royal Marines; and Lt. Commander in the Royal Navy - making him a NATO OF-3), but he was a Sqn Ldr of the Red Arrows, the RAF's Display Team, making him a man formerly in charge of one of the world's elite aerobatic display teams, requiring an insane level of skill just to be even considered to join them, as even a few seconds miss-timing can end in serious crashes, during air displays. I wish I could remember that pilot's name, as he - rightfully - deserves recognition for being the first person to drive faster than Mach 1, which would've pushed even his skills to the limit ... ... but seeing an aerial photo of Thrust SSC, a clear line, caused by the supersonic shock wave spreading laterally across the salt/sand, is still an incredible image ... ... hence I can't wait to see what Bloodhound can do, at maximum throttle ...

@@ghostrider-be9ek right? Shit, the Chiron needed special one time tires to hit over 300mph because pressure in them get too high. Imagine the stress the crank goes through at double that speed without actual tires to absorb it. Rockets pump water under them during launch so the acoustics don’t tear it apart, imagine a poor car going through the sound barrier at sea level. By comparison density is at 1,000 millibars at sea level. At 18,000 feet it’s less than half (cruising altitude), at 100,000 feet it’s only about 10. So over twice the air resistance on land...if it’s not too hot...and while keeping traction the whole time.

Bloodhound has an SRB, that's how it goes so fast. They Jet Engine until they hit the limit of the Jet, then SRB it up from there. The SRB sits along the bottom of the car, under the Jet Engine.

This made me think of what the environment must have been like when breaking the sound barrier....that quote specifically. "Later, I realized that the mission had to end in a let-down because the real barrier wasn't in the sky but in our knowledge and experience of supersonic flight." -Chuck Jager Fair winds and following seas, sir!

I have watched and taken into account all the factors mentioned in the quest for 1000 mph, as depicted by your excellent explanation, and I have the following question: "Was the yellow liquid tasty?"

You guys did a really good job with this. I've worked and drag racing on and off for a long time and this is a great way for people who like all types of different cars or think one time is better than another to really learn a lot and put things in proper perspective. Nice!

This was an awesome episode, I know it’s hard to continue to come up with new videos and I can imagine the concern of people will like new videos or not and this one was a winner. I think experimenting and trying new things is what’s going to keep this channel, especially when it’s teaching us! Keep it up!

There's a point where a record stops being a record. When land speed record cars start essentially being jets with the wings pulled off, and you are pinning them down to the ground when even without wings, they want to fly, I think you got there
