There was a guy on probation for assaulting a girl in Wisconsin. He put a siren and light bar on his pickup and went pulling people over after he had no luck finding drunk women to take advantage of at a bar. When I was with the NYPD they maintained a police impersonation squad. At that time police impersonation was often associated with organized gangs that would assume the guise of a tactical narcotics team in order to rob usually drug dealers. Some would pull off car stops in order to shake down motorist. Some were just police buffs who were relatively harmless. Some were former auxiliary police officers who decided on their own to just elevate their status without all that police academy stuff. I had an instructor for an investigation course who had been a court officer in NYC. He told us about an impersonator who in the late 1970s would show up at Supreme Court dressed in a suit with a detectives shield on a chain around his neck. There was no electronic security in those days. The guy had the look and deportment of a NYC Detective, see: Barney Miller or Columbo. At that time, the NYPD had over thirty-thousand officers. The courts were always crowed and busy. This guy basically kept a low and frendily profile and managed to mingle among the cops, court officers and assistant district attorneys for years. He knew enough police jargon and procedures to successfully pull off his impersonation. Finally, a rookie Court Officer who's father was a detective spotted the guy's badge as a phony. Nothing much happened to the guy because he did no harm. He would walk around the court house with what appeared to be a case folder under his arm. He would sit in on various criminal cases the he found interesting and he would chat up the cops in the witness room. He was friendly and ubiquitous so everyone became accustomed to his presence and no one challenged his authenticity. My instructor added that the guy was so nice that a lot of people were sorry to see him go, New York in the 70's.

I'm applying for Skywarn as my chase partner is with Skywarn as well, we're soon getting yellow flashers although technically not allowed, we've had too many dangerous encounters that were pulled off the road near a storm or in a downburst taking measurements with the regular hazards and people almost smashing into us. We don't work for the Dutch weather service, but we are with Skywarn Netherlands, taking measurements and videos of storms while trying to warn people of severe storms.
