I sure hope so, far better than the alternative. They don't make guns like that anymore, I bet more than a few of those could be considered legit historical artifacts a few decades from now (if they aren't already), and most of them look in near mint-condition no less (though I'm no expert). About 99% of people who would buy that kind of gun are gun nerds (AKA almost always good people who know gun safety like the back of their hand and WONT rob convenience stores with them), and they would pay a high price for them if they thought those were valuable enough. TLDR: Gun nerds may buy for inflated price, Police would make money for more gear and equipment, plus the family heirlooms/priceless pieces of expertly preserved history don't get chopped to bits. I think some of the more priceless ones, depending on who’s running the buyback program, will get a chance to be saved. There are two famous instances of the police actually donating some guns to law enforcement and I personally know one instance of a PD keeping a rare gun for demonstration purposes, just so it doesn’t get hacked up. The first one was in a gun buyback program, some Connecticut lady turned in a genuine STG44 assault rifle from WWII. I believe it was sent off to an auction house due to the fact that they usually go for $20,000; that PD probably got some good gear/booze ;). The second case was actually in Canada, where they busted a gang member who also collected firearms and actually had a Walther WA2000 sniper rifle. Apparently, he actually asked police to salvage the rifle specifically due to it’s worth and the authorities ended up donating it to a Canadian gun club. The third instance is of a guy I know personally, who said some town’s PD (can’t remember the name) of someone he knows has actually kept a gun from a buyback program for demonstration purposes. It turned out to be a WWII German FG42 paratrooper rifle, that usually goes for $300,000 (I know, it’s kind of absurd). Unfortunately, this instances are probably in the minority of things and some priceless firearms do get hacked up.

Wills & Estates are funny things, much like divorces you really see people's true deep down character qualities. Plus a lot of the stuff said I leave it to you and you pass it down to____ if it wasn't in writing it won't happen. I seen to many people promise their friends all these items were their's when they died and they swore that they had them in their will specifically stating that and they didn't have a single person. So someone asks while the family is grieving & divvying it all up for themselves, which usually becomes screw their friends they can have that old stack of magazines (or those old AOL Disks that have him name on their mailing label) or the stuff they were going to dump at good will, instead of having to pay for landfill dumping or special bulky item pick up. Basically the stuff Goodwill/Salvation Army has to may to dispose of because they can't refuse donations for the risk of P.R. blow back. One family was so vindictive, she wouldn't even let their circle of friends know which auction company she had come and take everything that auctioneers thought they could get good bids for on their monthly auctions. Like WTF, you won't let their friends know where to buy the possessions your selling that were meant for them and they willing to give you cash because of deep connection to that item, than the 100,000's of identical ones out there used for less..... There reason why so many family heirlooms are lost and usually because of 1-2 fuck ups in the generations ruining it, stealing it, pawning it, trading it for buzz, and more important do not understanding that they are the keepers, the preservationists of the items for their descendants 5-10+ Generations down the family tree

I said the same thing about that buy back program: when it comes to crime with firearms, no one turning in those classics ever had any inkling of going on a drive by with them. Plus you're 100% correct: the valuable ones could be auctioned off and the funds used to support various programs. It's like the politicians in Toronto wanting the city to be a gun free zone by making ownership illegal. Well, all the shoot ups are NOT committed by legal gun owners and the ones used by the criminals are NOT stolen from legal gun owners so the ban will achieve absolutely nothing. Know what will stop it? Actually lock up and punish those committing the crimes. Case in point: guy gets caught selling illegal handguns to an undercover RCMP agent. Gets released on bail 2 days later. Fast forward a week and you guessed it, same guy is arrested again for selling illegal handguns to an undercover agent. How about keeping the fucker behind bars?
