Early Doobies (here) were fronted by Tom Johnston. When he became very ill, Michael McDonald (an accomplished R&B singer) stepped in changed their sound. Both eras produced quality songs, but most people prefer one iteration over the other. Team Tom here, but massive respect for Michael.

I was a teenager in the 70’s and this is the music that was played all day every day..how truly privileged we were to live through the 60s 70s and 80s.we didn’t realize at the time it was going to end.. I wouldn’t call it progress.

I still remember the very first time I ever heard The Doobie Brothers, when I was almost 13 years old. I'd gotten into trouble because my room was a mess, and even though it was a beautiful summer day, my mom said I couldn't do anything or go anywhere until I cleaned my room. So, I was in there with the radio blasting (because we all know that good music helps you do chores, right?). After a while, the DJ said that this was a new single from a new group called The Doobie Brothers. Once the song started, I was instantly in love with it! I quickly wrote down the name of the group before I forgot it. I've been a devoted fan ever since (I'm 62 now). Thanks for sparking this great memory.

The Doobie Brothers, a group from San Jose, ca. Everybody around the Bay Area know the Doobie Brothers. They used to go to San Jose State University and do a lot of free concerts in the downtown park of San Jose. Seen them many times in concert. Later, the new lead singer of the Doobie Brothers was Michael McDonald who also sang a duet with Pattie LaBelle (On my own) which was a big hit. They just did a reunion tour.

That Live clip is from The Midnight special that this studio track was over laid on . Check that one out (The Midnight special video) when you can . The Doobies were always a good show . I've had the pleasure of seeing them live 3 times . On the down side , there were 3 different line-ups for those 3 shows . The best was at the beginning of their tour for their huge hit album "Minute by Minute" . It was a theater show in NYC's now gone Palladium before the album broke huge . Great show & one of the LOUDEST I've ever been to also .

This is a great example of a band “performing” a song to the recorded version. Without the great sound mixing, the song would have stunk on that stage with that setup. That’s why you should go with the recorded version for 70’s songs. ❤️😁

The sound you were refering too BJ is a flanger which gives a "swooshing", "sweeping" noise, as if the sound is being heard through a drainpipe, frequently compared to the sound of a jet. It spits then delays one of the feeds on top of the real time feed giving that effect.

The Doobies originated in San Jose Ca. They do not do southern rock. The videos of the day were recorded as is. No dubbing, no lip syncing and slight of hand bullshit that is common place in your modern day "muzak" world. We didn't need to see some half-naked woman with 12 dancers and a smoke machine and auto tune. We saw hard working talent that spent years honing their craft and then taking their place among the greats. How many of your favorite singers of today could sit on a stool with just a microphone and actually SING?
