This song is about a guy from the 19th century. Back then farmers, along the Mississippi, Ohio and Missouri rivers would build large rafts after harvest and load them up with their crops, goods and wares. And they would float all the way down the river(s) to New Orleans and then they would sell all their products. They were on the 'Ol black water but not in it. It's black because at night, bodies of water appear to be black. Once he has sold everything and has some free time, he goes honky tonking in the city. Dancing with some "pretty mama". After a couple days, he would book passage on a north bound steam boat and head home with his money for his family etc. That's pretty much the song in a nutshell.

When I was little, my dad always use to take me night fishing. We would wade a river near our farm at night. The water would get up to his abdomen, but it would get up to my arm pits in some places. We would cast our bait ahead of us and let it float down while we walked along slowly reeling it back to us. We caught catfish and bass. BUT that water was sooooo dark, and you couldn't see anything. I would feel along the bottom of the river bed, sometimes really muddy, sometimes lots of gravel. My dad told me to "shuffle my feet" along the river bottom because he didn't want me to step on a snapping turtle. He said if I shuffled my feet a turtle would swim off in a bumped into it, but if I stepped on it in my bite me. My feet would bump into submerged objects like a stick or big rock... sometimes the things I bumped into would move! There were big turtles in that river. And the snakes...... the snakes... My dad had hat with a head lamp on so he could see. I stuck right beside him but I couldn't hold a flashlight in my hand as well as my fishing pole. But he would always look behind us to make sure nothing was sneaking up. All along the way we would see snakes swimming across the river up ahead of us, and sometimes we we see them swimming across behind us. Once we saw a big cottonmouth coiled up in the roots of a tree on a steep bank not more than 20 feet away from us. I was so freaking scared I never left my dad's side. We waded at least a half mile before getting out and walking back to my dads truck. But we had a nice string of fish to show for it. But damn.... wading through that dark water sure was scary when you're only 9 or 10... Every time I hear this song, I always think of night fishing with my dad.

I would and have many many times gone swimming in water where you can't see your feet, most places don't have things in the water that can hurt you and if it does they leave when you start splashing around... now don't get me wrong, I'm not swimming in the ocean at night, and I'm not getting in any place that had gators day or night...

When I got out of the navy I got a job as a watchman on a dredge in the Ohio river. In the middle of the night when the moon was over cast it was dark. I would get in the boat that we used to get to shore and move away from the dredge. You could barely see more than five feet away, and when you looked at the shore the firefly’s in the trees on both sides of the valley would blend into the stars because you couldn’t see the tree line and lthe water would be almost motionless. It was beautiful, it looked like there was only sky and water and it eerily quiet and peaceful. Every time I hear this song I think about being out there smoking one and relaxing.

Since y'all like going to New Orleans, you'll recognize their love song to the city. The band had an extended stay there early in the 70s. They even named one of their albums Toulouse Street, after the street in the French Quarter. Can't go wrong with the Doobies.

1978, I was 14 and got my first paycheck for stuffing envelopes at the United Way. I bought 8 front row seats for the Doobies and took several friends and my brother. Tickets were 7 bucks with a 1 time processing fee of 50 cents. I got pics, my friend still has her stub and another friend grabbed lead singers cap and got to wear it for a second or two before Sims security got it back. What a great show, but you know what is the craziest part? It was the Doobie Brothers Farewell tour. lol Edit because I forgot to mention it was at the Saint Paul Civic Center.

The author of the song, Pat Simmons, stated he was playing a riff in double-dropped D tuning on his guitar. That's where both E strings are dropped to D. He started playing that opening riff and the producer, Ted Templeman, told him, "If you write a song with that riff, it will be a hit." So, Pat started turning it into a song. When it came time to record it, Tom Johnston--the band's leader and main songwriter and singer--was unavailable. He and Templeman were in the middle of recording tracks. So, the band recorded it without him and recruited a fiddle player who was in another studio to come over and jam on the track. I don't even think they knew his name. I don't believe he is credited on the album. I could be wrong but I believe that to be the case. This is essentially the Doobies without Tom Johnston or Michael McDonald and they could still kick ass! Check out Tiran Porter's piece "Flying Cloud" off that same album. Why wasn't he writing more stuff?

The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band that have been around for 5 decades. They covered many genres of music over the years. They had so many great songs such as "What A Fool Believes", "Listen To The Music", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "Long Train Runnin'", "China Grove", "Takin' It To The Streets", "The Doctor", "Echoes Of Love", "You Belong To Me", "Take Me In Your Arms" etc.

Mentioning them makes me remember of an old tv show called "What's Happenin" Roger, Dwayne and ReRun meet the Doobie Brothers. One of the band member says something to Roger and he says, "Which Doobie you be" Whole episode had to deal with bootlegging concerts.

I just went to see the Doobies on their 50th Anniversary Tour with Michael McDonald on Sunday 7/17, and it was fabulous! They wrapped up with this, then "Takin' It To the Streets" and "Listen to the Music" for the finale. Such a beautiful atmosphere represented by all walks of life! I don't thing you've checked out "Takin' It to the Streets", and you REALLY should! I highly suggest the live version Santa Barbara 1982. It's a medley with "Jesus is Just Alright". If there's anything that will make you feel that we are all one, this is it!!

You can tell the Doobies had never been around a river in the south when they sang that one line. "Catfish a-jumpin'" Scuse the hell outta me, but you ain't never seen a catfish jump in your life! But then, The Doobies formed in San Jose, Ca. so it's understandable. But the lyric fit! But hell, I'd jump in that water. After dark was the only time I went skinny dipping! 😁

I'm with BJ on the feeling about "black water". I live right off of the mighty Columbia River between Washington and Oregon, near one of the widest and deepest areas. One night, heading back from a day spent on one of the sandy islands in the river, we ran out of gas and just started floating in the middle of nothing but pitch black. It was the scariest feeling, on that black water, with no moonlight and knowing there were just hundreds of feet of water beneath you, far from shore, and you can't see a thing. Never went out on the river again after dark.

This tune is great even on Acoustic Guitar. A Band I was in had a Band Picnic & BBQ, as the Sun set I played "Black Water" on Acoustic Guitar and just finished when a Huge Brown Bear came out of the woods. The Guitarists Joe, Walter & I stood behind the Drummer who produced a 22 Pistol, When he fired a warning Shot, The Bear didn't care and we said, "We're going to need a bigger Gun." Lol. I like "Jesus is just alright," Our Band used to play "Long Train Running, China Grove & Listen to the Music." by The Doobie Brothers. Thanks, This tune brings back Band Memories.

I love these older Doobies songs with the original lineup. Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons made a great singer/songwriter duo and this was the Doobie Bros. that I first loved as a teenager. Not to take anything away from the later version of the band with Michael McDonald, which was also great, but just not the same. ✌🏼😎

"Black Water" made to #1 as a "A" single on the billboard Top 100 on March 15, 1975. Billboard also said this was the Doobie Brothers 2nd best song. The song was written and sung by Patrick Simmons (guitarist) with Tom Johnston as the Back up singer. Usually Tom wrote the songs of Early Doobie Brothers and sang lead, with Patrick Simmons and Tiran Porter (Bassist) as Back up singers. As a "B" side single on two other records it made to #52 and then # 32 on the Top 100 list in 1973. This was the Doobie Brother first number One Hit.

I completely get your fear of the water at night. I grew up in St. Louis and the Mississippi was a daily realty. But I remember a late night beer party on the River and I remember thinking how if we got too stupid, NO ONE could do a daing thing for you. I’m 60 and I STILL remember that night.
