aww, poor umbrella man. I remember when I was studying in Japan, the fact that I could use chopsticks was received with the same amount of amazement as my speaking the language. I was like "wow, talk about low expectations"🤣🤣 I was extra thankful for the lessons from my childhood best friend's family. He'll get there! I really relate to your comments about being alone. I think this is something that a lot of women struggle with when they're younger. Society values us in part by the people that we're attached to and being alone is equated with loneliness instead of being comfortable in your own skin. Travelling alone was the best thing for my own growth. I realized that I didn't NEED people; I had the power to choose people. People were added value to my life, so I should make sure that I wasn't surrounded by toxicity. That meant losing some friends, but the people who've remained bring so much joy to my life and are my best cheerleaders. Wishing you the best!

Its wild to me going into a comment section on youtube, finding someone whos sharing their experience about something and then proceeding to attempt to de-legitimize that person’s experience just because you felt like it. To me, having to pay hundreds of dollars and travel a minimum of 11 hours to see the person that you love who is your partner for life, isnt exactly easy or fun, and it is not the norm either. The fact that I cant just decide to go to my girlfriend on a whim because i miss her a lot. That counts as long distance for me, but who am i to argue, im just the person living it, right? lol

I think the issue your parents have with umbrella man is not so much his educational background but more so that he’s not Korean (there’s plenty of people without higher education that are successful), as it is just harder for them to communicate and bond with him as they would want to be close to you, your future husband, and children. It’s just easier with someone from the same background, and for them to explain and get their friends and relatives to accept. At the end of the day, they would love you and grow to accept umbrella man if you were to ultimately be with him because you are their only kid and will always love you, but they will be disappointed. That part of it, you will find it hard for them to get over even if they do end up seeing some good in him because they will always think you could have gotten better. In the end, either party could be correct, as there’s no guarantee in any relationship, but you’re right…you’re a big boy and need to make your own decisions for yourself. Remember one thing- you can have many boyfriends or husbands but really only have one set of parents. Don’t lose that relationship. Try to make things work out even if you choose someone they don’t approve.
@rileywithendo2 жыл бұрын
im also korean american and feel for dooby cuz my parents too a very long time to accept my bf. and now they love and adore him. i thnk asian parents really dont like interracial couples bc they care abt their culture and their race so much. but when that is pushed aside, parents will still come around (most parents).
@bumblebee_bae2 жыл бұрын
Why do you think the argument was about umbrella man?
@carreralicious2 жыл бұрын
@@bumblebee_bae I’m referring more so to her previous video where she stated specifically that her parents felt he wasn’t worthy due to him not having a higher education but I’m guessing that still is being discussed between her and her parents which is causing her to want to run away.
@rileywithendo2 жыл бұрын
@@carreralicious my bf dropped out of college but his parents and i knew he was a genius, he hated school. And eventually he went back to college bc of me and now he's almost done with his undergrad degree and by next year he might make six figures. So to me education is important but it's not everything. I think Asian parents have a hard time with that bc some of them are still a developing country and higher education is seen as wealth.
@carreralicious2 жыл бұрын
@@rileywithendo Understood, but I don’t think this is about higher education, I think it’s more about umbrella man not being Korean. The parents are using the excuse that he isn’t higher educated as the main premise, as that is an easy thing to point out since Tina is well educated, but I think it’s more so that he’s not traditional Korean (or even Asian)…someone they could bond with.

Mad respect and love for people who break free from controlling parents who don’t respect their kid’s boundaries. It is one of the biggest challenges we face in Asian households. However if your parents wealth is involved in this adventure it is not really breaking free. I hope that is not the case here. This doesn’t necessarily mean parents funding your lifestyle but also that safety net in your life where you can come back to when your “breaking free” from parents fail. How often do we see a responsible parent taking a break from us? Again something we see in Asian households, where we rebel against our parents but still need them to fund our lifestyle and humiliate them when they become an inconvenience.

Hey! So I’m saying this from the context of hoping you’re happy. I feel like you create more content (but don’t necessarily vlog in a way that gives insight into your life) more so when you’re less happy. I don’t mean to sound like an asshole, but this is common in creators. Don’t let your career define or limit you, but don’t let a romantic relationship fence you in either. You are worthy of success professionally, in whatever field you choose. But don’t let a relationship dictate your professional choices. I don’t want to sound like you parent, but it does seem like that might be happening. I respect you. I respect your privacy. I hope you are happy and are living a fulfilling, meaningful life. Relationships will come and go but your family will always stay. Your parents invested and sacrificed so much for you, you will never be able to repay them. This is definitely a cultural difference but I will never be selfish enough to run away from my family to live with a boy I just met

That's the difference between advanced countries and developing countries. Advanced world understands that children have their own lives.

@@zizisisi LOL, I'm french dude. 😂 Everything she has experienced abroad, the financial security blanket that allowed her to do youtube instead of finding a job... all of this was thanks to her parents support. So yeah, I believe she is selfish.
@zizisisi2 жыл бұрын
@@Hoid. she's explained this i think, the videos were initially made as portfolio pieces to find a real job, they then picked up. Today she's without a doubt a millionaire in her own right. She can make her own decisions, including cutting toxic parents off. My husband did the same for me and today we couldn't be happier so it must be a valid way to go about this.
@Hoid.2 жыл бұрын
@@zizisisi I don't think you quite realize everything implied in what you're talking about. Her cultural background, her studies that cost hundreds of thousands, her rich friend group and the network she built, the fact that she could spend time building a portfolio on KZbin and traveling instead of waiting tables like all the other jobless graduates, the luxury of feeling like you can do what makes you happy instead of having to work to just survive... this is ALL thanks to her "toxic" parents that she qualified herself as very loving and supportive in past videos. She is talking like the most spoilt child I have ever seen. While most of us are surviving day to day, she flees to the other side of the world to "recalibrate" after an argument with her parents. This is so ridiculously dramatic and first world problematic, I can't....

4:15 other than my mom, you're honestly the only other chef I look up to Tina. Like no joke, love how you don't take things too seriously, you seem to always have fun, things in life don't have to come out perfectly, and you remind us that it is okay to be alone. You're one of the reasons why I don't only try to be a better cook but also a better person :)

Family is everything. I hope you and your parents will be good. Im sure all will work out but dont forget to see their point of view as well. As the people who had your back and worked for your life from day 1. One of the biggest cliches of “parents knowing better” or “thinking they always right” is based on more truth than we think. especially when we still young with little experience and wisdom.
@christinalaipiano2 жыл бұрын
Be careful of confusing "parents knowing better" with parents being toxic
@lightup67512 жыл бұрын
@@christinalaipiano I dont think anyone would confuse this as those are two very different things. Im saying that generally, most of the time parents are right and most kids are clueless. Because they are kids. And parents used to be kids that became adults. Most kids realize this very late when they are adults and sometimes even only when they have their own kids. That their parents were mostly right and only wanted their best for them. Of course there is exceptions and toxic parents but in general parents know better than their kids about life.

Honestly thank you for being you and making the content that you do. I grew up in the States, and don’t really have a great connection to Korean culture like my parents would like me to. Your videos are a way for me to reconnect with my ancestry in a way that’s modern and refreshing. I also show your content to my super white American gf, she wants to appreciate and learn about Korean culture but I don’t know enough to really help her. So your posts and videos have been instrumental in showing her that side of me.

When you asked him if he wanted a fork 😂 I went to Korea with a bunch of friends to visit a friend that lived in Seoul. We stopped at this restaurant and we were all enjoying our meals when this little auntie came over from the kitchen and quietly placed a fork next to my bowl. Needless to say my friends ROASTED me. I was practicing too! 🤣

I think half the hate is directed towards her being so disconnected from normal average people, her saying of things like how she is not privileged compared to her much richer friends when she earns probably millions from youtube ruffled alot of feathers. The other half are just incels idiots who is jealous of her having a bf.

Darn!! I feel your pain @Doobydobap/Tina. A very, very long time ago my parents wanted me to pursue a career i had no interest or desire. I wanted to do something different but it was a really, really big war between my dad and I. Lot of sore feelings for a long time. It took 10 years to close the wounds but i have no regrets pursuing what i love(d) to do. Trying to decide where to go next but that's for another day. You recharge and if you can, reflect on that because your parents may be hard on you its because they are scared for you. They love you and love is sometimes impossible to show, especially in Korean society with Korean parents it can be brutal. Speaking as both a parent as well as a son (my elderly parents before they passed still thought of me as their "baby"; sigh), Live. Love. Enjoy. It will work itself out. And by the way, I LOVE your cooking walk throughs. Helps motivate this semi-senile dinosaur in feeding the family.
