My first motorcycle road trip, ALONE, 2000 miles on a borrowed Harley Street Glide. A visit with @HerTwoWheels was my first leg of the journey, 1000 miles from Georgia to Ohio. There was a whole lot of rain, pain, broken itineraries and that feeling you get only when it's just you, the road, and two wheels.

Doodle, I just learned to ride this year at 51 years old. After losing my son, my wife wanting a divorce and almost dying from a burst appendix, I just decided to finally do something that I've been fascinated with since I was probably 6 years old watching the neighbor zoom around on his motocross bike. This video has been very inspiring and encouraging after having numerous friends and family tell me I'm crazy to do this and that I'll end up injured or dead.

Hello Mr Speed. I started six years ago when I was 60. Like you, I was always fascinated by motorcycles, and finally decided to just do it. Even after falling and breaking my thumb in the first day of training class, I went back the next Spring and took the class again, passed it, and obtained my license. Now that I retired recently, motorcycling contributed to the best summer of my life. My local BMW club has also contributed to my enjoyment meeting good people who share my passion. I hope you are feeling better now and look forward, as I do, to next spring and a full summer of riding again. (I am in the Chicago area.) Stay safe always.

Absolutely amazing!!! What a great ride…and honestly, the fact that rain was a major factor, makes this trip even more credible! I moved west to avoid that kind of weather and be able to ride daily in the canyons. In the weeks to come I think you will realize just how hard your first 1000 miles actually were: unfamiliar bike, rain, new roads, solo…amazing.

First: good for you for taking a road trip. Especially alone. You would be totally fine. Second: 500 miles/day is TONS of miles. I wouldn't do more than 350 miles and I wouldn't do that regularly. 250 - 300 is the sweet spot. Keep on with the rides!

Oh boy! Well, being retired and 72 years old, I’m blessed to be able to take solo road trips every summer. However, I absolutely loath riding in the rain and at night, especially at my age, but I always get caught riding in both! I still put in 8-12 hours a day riding from Michigan to the great west, mostly camping along the way. My Bride scolds me for riding like I’m racing the clock. (She can see my route on gps.””) She says,”what are you doing”?! “You’re retired! Act like it! Take your time!” And of course she’s right. Be safe. God bless you and your family and enjoy being young and gorgeous❣️👍

Hi Doodle, you set yourself a huge challenge in what turned out to be horrendous weather. The Street Glide looked beautiful, but is so heavy and neede all your skills to keep it upright. It was great to see you meet up with Jess and Jordan for some well earned pampering. I guess you've learned a lot about wet weather riding, and the gear, nothing worse than wet gloves! I hope the weather was kinder to you on your next road trip, and thanks for sharing your experience.💗

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I've been riding more years than you've been living (yeah, I'm an old lady) and this video brought back such wonderful memories of when I was young and inexperienced and learned I just didn't plan right for this motorcycle trip. It brought back really good memories. In the years ahead of you you're gonna look back on this trip and that rain and that experience and have the biggest smile on your face. Your video also reminded me of one of my favorite movies, "21 Days Under The Sky." If you've not seen it you'll love it. The scene goes... "The rain is another thing... It's a colder cold than the most frozen you've ever been. Once it gets through the layers, and soaks to the flesh, pelting hard as bullets. The worst dark cloud of realization is you won't be dry for days. Stripped naked in some anonymous Cheyenne laundromat. Dry whatever you can. Your boots stay stiff and soaked. Your jacket and gloves morph to snarling beasts. Your helmet clings ice to your skull on principle. For Americans it's unnatural. This level of open ended discomfort died long ago."

I love that your doing this and doing it solo! I remember my first solo long cross country. That moment when you realize that a 7 hour trip is 10 on a bike, hail on your face hurts a lot and a $30.00 motel room is maybe even a little worse than you could have imagined is priceless😂😂😂 After my first planned out trip with daily destinations i found myself burned out not rejuvenated asi had hoped I never planned a trip again when my wife gifted me this awesome coin and said “ your trips are your trips they shouldn’t be stressful or just more work! flip this coin every night to decide where your going tomorrow” I’ve traveled this way now for over 60k miles and I wouldn’t change the way I do it. I’m now thinking about my 7th annual “ coin toss trip” that will happen this summer. For now the bikes are pretty much put away for the winter and I’m focusing on my new hobby flying. Keep two wheel down my friend. 🏍🏍🏍 Cheers

Awesome Keep in mind that all your motorcycle training and your martial arts training helped prepare you for this trip. Most short distance riders would have had much more difficulty than you did in that weather. You and Jessie have made comments about building up to longer riding days over time and always expect it to take longer than it seems like it should. BTW, dropping a big motorcycle is usually not as big of an issue as it seems like it should be. With the saddlebags and crash bars on that bike it will not fall over as far as Snow's R1200GS. So it may actually be easier to pick up than that R1200GS. Also, regardless of ride gender, if there are people around when I large motorcycle tips over it is amazing how quickly how quickly people gather around to help. There really are a lot of good people in the world. (Note, on many current motorcycle models a tip over records a tip over fault in the motorcycle controls computer's memory. So people can't lie to dealerships about tipping over a motorcycle that is on.)

Suggestion: If your yellow hi-lighter onesie has ANY seams, get some “tent seam sealer” appropriate for your fabric. Seal ALL seams. Then get a good spray-on waterproofing spray and give it two coats all over. Do the same for your gloves and boots. Don’t worry about those holes where your hands and feet go through. Spray won’t help them! Lol!The moral of this story is that seams ALWAYS leak, and waterproof fabrics won’t stay dry forever. In other words, they all leak too. Try it; you’ll like it. Mink oil is supposed to waterproof leather. I used it on the stitching of my Ultimate Seat. Might add seam seal too before my 4,000 mile ride. I WON’T ride in the rain on purpose. My dog doesn’t have a rain suit and her sidecar could fill up quicker than it drains out and soaking her orthopedic bed. Not good! We leave 9 April. If you want something fun, the first week of August every year at a place called Clifftop, WV is the Appalachian String Band Music Festival. Lasts all week. Most camp but other accommodations are available nearby. You can search and scout it out on KZbin to see if it’s for you. There are annual chapters posted. Can search as I told you or maybe even just “Clifftop”. If you come, bring that eligible, mature Latina who likes to ride for me to meet!

You're awesome! Also, long distance rides are basically ALWAYS going to include a TON of rain. I've never not experienced that. When you're crossing so much ground during certain times of year, it's just impossible not to hit storms. You just get used to riding in the rain! Also, in my experience even the best rain gear has a failure point. Eventually the water finds a way! Thankfully you had a great machine for the job! Baggers are amazing for eating miles! I'll never not own one again.

Love this video. Makes me recall my motorcycle trips on my 1979 Honda CX500 (water cooled twin) in Germany in the early-mid 1980. I was a US serviceman stationed in Germany (called West Germany back then). The bike was fast enough for the Autobahn, but I never rode it faster than 100Mph or so. I was poor back then (duh..US military), and often slept ON the motorcycle at Autobahn rest stops. I would put the bike up on its center stand, leave my (also yellow) rain gear on and sometimes even sleep with my helmet on, feet up up the handlebars. It almost always rained on me (Also duh, Germany), but I was off the ground and warm as I dressed in layers. To be honest, I didn't invent this method, but rather copied German riders I had seen. Anyway, great video, great channel. You are a luminary and one of my heroes. Also, envious of your husband, haha.

Just wanted to say I appreciate your content. With the knowledge you've gained and the knowledge you've taught others with. I can Absolutely identify having to stop riding for years due to work and family prioritie and getting back into it. My goal is to get my wife into riding and watching your channel for support. Thank you

Great job knowing your limits and enduring the rain and not giving up. I always ride in the rain, it can be the most prettiest sunshiny day with no rain in the forecast and 20 miles into the journey it starts raining lol.... oilwell the journey goes on and I still enjoy the ride, the views and the people I meet. I once road from Houston Tx. to NE Louisiana (home) in a tropical storm, the most exhilarating ride I've ever had. And also learned that any rode trip on a bike you can double the time frame from a vehicle...loved the video now i have to find part two..Stay safe keep the rubber side down and catch ya later....👍😎👍 MLLH&R.

This is so cool. I found your channel 2 years ago when I was just learning to ride motorcycles. I was scared to death. In one of your videos while out on a ride, you spoke about your first days of riding. You spoke about building your confidence and being a girl on a motorcycle. Your words on that ride still resonates in my head. I'm 60 now, two years old on a motorcycle and absolutely love it. I own a 2019 Harley Heritage (my 1st ever motorcycle, named "Iron Goddess"), and a 2021 Electra Glide Standard (a real bagger - haha - named " Black Widow"). I have been to Sturgis twice now, going back in 2022. Thank you for your great videos. They have really helped. Also, congrats on your 2000 mile trip. Someday I will try my first solo ride Be safe out there.

I've ridden 4 different Honda vfr's on trips from Chicago to Key West...and there is ALWAYS rain... Nothing like cold rain running down your back and soaking your family jewels for 600 miles to make you appreciate warm dry clothes and a hot shower ! But like you said it makes the good days that much better . You were right now to push yourself too much... We don't want a dented Doodle ! Happy Trails !

Greetings! Gave up on motorcycle rain gloves and picked up neoprene fishing gloves. Pre curved, so no pressure from the gloves. Easy to get on/off..i always struggled with dedicated motorcycle rain gloves..the wet insides always seemed to stick to my hands. Took forever to dry. The fishing gloves don"t soak up any water. No crash protection, but most dedicated rain gloves are pretty flimsy anyway.

A good guidline is that you do half the distance in the afternoon, and your stop/breaks are twice as long compared to the morning. Don't use a phone but a proper GPS, because it's tells you the time off arriving during the day. Always carry a second pair of waterproof gloves and some water resistent Goretex liners in your jacket and your boots, so they stay dry. Never skip meals or drinking during the day to avoid fatigue.

I applaud your will to continue on. Rainy days are the worst. Especially on the interstate. For your future trips, the best way to travel is, dont plan, On a bike you will never hit the mark you are wanting to hit, and the stress of hitting your mark only takes a horrible toll on your body and mind. Stay safe.

Awesome Journey!!! I've ridden bikes all my life but never did a multi day trip. Late August, heading to Vegas for a family gathering. Leaving from South Carolina. Can't wait!!!

I completed a 2,650 mile cruise last August. I found that the Air Hawk inflateable air pad that sits on top of my seat gave me a greater ride, that didn't hurt my rump. oh, i was riding a 2019 Indian Roadmaster with cruise control also. Plan to ride with favorable weather conditions. Pack plenty of dry clothes, and get plenty of sleep. Good Luck on your next adventure!

Doodle, you look to be adventurous, a little gutsy, a safe driver , and look like you are enjoying life , you are making memories you will have all your life , When I was 21 , I wanted to learn how to ride as motorcycle, so I borrowed a friends Honda 305 scrambler for 2 weeks then went out and bought a 72 CB 750 Honda, a little scary at first but I’m still riding the bike, a few years ago I bought a 79 Honda CBX , and I think this year it’s going in to the Honda dealer to get it road worthy, and yes, I intend to be safe .

You should be sponsored by Matcha Latte. I just ordered.... :) Love that you did the ride. I'm a big fan of either delaying the trip or taking a different vehicle when it's going to rain that much, or even at all.

When you're about to stop for the evening, grab a newspaper and ball some of it up in your gloves/boots. Might have to change it a few times throughout the evening/morning but it works great in a pinch to dry them out. Can use paper towels, TP or pretty much any paper, but newspaper is my go-to.

Don’t avoid riding in the rain! Take every opportunity as a new rider. You learn how to be very smooth when you ride in the rain a lot. I live in Tennessee, but learned to ride in the UK and got good at riding in the rain, how to keep your visibility in the rain, and what few works and doesn’t in the rain.

I always try to have a mentor assist me before I do anything too big, difficult, dangerous, or expensive. Learning by experience is often best but sometimes painful. You bit off a lot for your first time. You did pretty well but imagine the difference you'll have on your next trip!

You did so well! That headache was most likely from your unaccustomed neck muscles and yes, the buffeting from the low screen. I'm sure my chiropractor would agree. My fingers are firmly crossed for you to have dry weather in the next vid! 🤞
