A good review of a lovely airbrush. Mine came from Japan a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately it got import duty slapped on it but it was still a good saving. I've got a very early Iwata (from when they came in a wooden box covered in black plastic leather), an original Kodak Aztek (as well as a couple of the Testors versions), some cheap Chinese brushes, a Badger Krome, H&S Evolution and an Infinity, plus Gunze's PS290 fan spray. In the past I had a badger 200, DeVilbiss Sprite and a Super 63, so a fair amount of experience with different airbrushes. And every one is fitted with a quick release coupling, the end of the hose has an Iwata inline filter/water trap as well as the female quick release coupling. Having that little lot under the airbrush gives something to hold onto very firmly. Paints from Humbrol, Testors, Revell, Ammo, AK, Vallejo, Gunze, Tamiya, MRP and recently MMP. So how do they stack up? It's horses for courses, different brushes for different jobs. PS290 hands down for primers and large areas such as 1/32 model aircraft base coats. A cheap no name Chinese 0.3 set up for everyday quick spraying. Then for fine, smooth, reliable I-Can-Do-This work, it's a toss up between the Infinity, the Krome and the PS 770. The thing is, I've got hands like shovels and I tend to favour the larger brushes just because they handle better for me, so it's the Krome and the PS 770. I had a friend come over the other evening to play with the Silhouette Mask Cutter and I suggested a blast with the airbrushes (he's in the market for an upgrade) and use some MMP. He was a bit reticent but once he started playing he was blown away by the versatility of the MMP paint and the airbrushes, definitely liked the PS 770! I had a hard time getting him off the spraying. I give the PS 770 a huge thumbs up. It is so versatile, so predictable, it feels bulletproof. Try it with MRP lacquer or MMP acrylics, you will be amazed. Once again, thanks for a superb review. Bruce Crosby

Thanks for doing this review Matt. I've seen this airbrush, and I did consider getting one, but went with an Olympos Micron instead. Hearing that the Mr. Hobby airbrush is that much heavier and bulky makes me glad I made the choice I did. Still, you have to hand it to these guys, the look of their airbrush makes it stand out from the crowd. Thanks again.

I think I read once that the gsi creos and tamiya airbrush ranges were once manufactured by iwata themselves, goes back to the bb rich company days. Might well still be the case, gsi were always unavailable outside of Japan but that's changed massively here in the U.K. In the last 6 months with nearly every product of theirs being readily available domestically. Great review, tempted now 😀

To me, it seemed like you were getting slightly better, more precise finer lines with the PS770 than the Micron. What are your thoughts 4 years later? I find very hard to justify plunging 450+ on a new Micron than $250 for the 770. I want to do those damn squiggly WWII Italian cammo jobs, none of my current AB can do it.

29:40 Instead of Porsche, that's exactly what the Lambo Gallardo and Audio R8 were. All three companies under the VW group, the Gallardo and R8 shared engine and other things under the hood but the rest and final assembly in their own respective plants, while the Lambo cost twice as much as the R8. And as other mentioned Iwata, Gunze and Tamiya's airbrushes are manufactured by the same company.

I read a piece written by a guy who researched where iwatas were made. It transpires that Iwata do not manufacture their airbrushes. All airbrushes in Japan come from the same factory and that includes gsi creos as well as tamiya.

I hear that Gunze is Iwata's OEM. Tamiya, Wave, Olympos are BB Rich(Hokushin Seiki)OEM.
@xxbabaxx125 жыл бұрын
Fuso Seiki is the oem for all of them actually. Iwata bought the design and manufacturing right from olympos in the 80s, while richpen(fuso seiki) was making pens for olympos and they still do to this day only instead of olympos printed on the pen its iwata. Also most tamiya and low end iwata have their pens made in china/ taiwan (sparmax being one of the oem)

Thanks, Matt! I know this is from a year ago, but it was very helpful and informative. Your "tests" and comparisons are really well done - laid out to do direct and meaningful testing and comparisons. Many folks don't do well thought out testing or comparisons. BTW - your black basing series was incredible and the best coverage on the topic.

Thankyou for a VERY helpful review. I don't think I need an airbrush that fine yet, I'm still mainly using a cheap 0.3mm airbrush and I've already got an old Badger 100-C (I think it has a 0.2mm needle?) which I haven't really even used yet. But now I'm wondering if there's a bargain-priced Mr Airbrush in 0.3mm size to replace my current KKMoon airbrush.

Essentially all airbrush “made in japan” are done by richpen and their parent company, Fuso Seiki. Iwata, mrhobby, olympos, wave etc all slap their name on richpen’s brushes. This apply strictly to made in japan only brush (exp: iwata neo is made in china, only the micron is strictly a japan product). More information in this blog, very detailed research. armourinscale.wordpress.com/2016/08/18/demystifying-japans-airbrush-industry/

Thanks, Matt! I need your help, please. Where is full open (how many turns from full closed) on the MAC valve? Also, have you had to replace the needle on this airbrush yet? I've got an Iwata 0.18 in mine now, which works, but I was wondering if you had some experience/opinions. I can't seem to find a needle from the original manufacturer. That would be the best. The Iwata needle works for me, but is really too short.

Is there much overspray with these kind of quality airbrushes? I've been trying to do mottling with an Eclipse (.3mm) and the overspray can spoil the effect. Could be my fault, of course.

I'd like to know if you sprayed that primer straight out of the bottle or did you reduce it ? Most people don't spray primer through a 0.18 needle, let alone primer without reduction of some kind. How much / what percentage did you reduce, if any ?
@DoogsModels5 жыл бұрын
It's not a primer. It's paint that's the color of the primer used on things like the F-22

Is the trigger feel and non-linearity just like Iwata? What I love about iwatas are the non-linear paint delivery when you pull the trigger. Starts out really light and then comes along as you keep pulling. My HS infinity sadly isn't like that. I'd gladly spend more on the iwata "feel" if that's not present in the mr hobby
@DoogsModels7 жыл бұрын
See - I would say that Iwata has a definitely linear feel - paint delivery ramps up in an utterly predictable fashion. I've found that Harder & Steenbeck and Grex are similar, but don't have the same trigger feel (and H&S is super-prone to spitting when the needle is seated). As for trigger feel - the PS-770 is a tiny bit lighter, probably due to the lack of that tensioning screw, but feel is very close to the Custom Micron.

gsi contracts out the production of airbrush to iwata, that's why the resemblance, part of these 2 brands actually interchangeable, try comparing this guy with cmc plus, they look like twin brothers, well, except something like the window, the matt looking, the color of the pre-set dial and so on.

So did you @Doogs' (or anyone else) try iwata 0.18mm needle as replacement? Did it fit? Are they identical? I am blown away with this airbrush!!! I have been using iwata HP-CH and really liked it a lot but the marbling effect I can get out of it was not that great (my fault, I know). That is why I wanted to give this one a go since it is supposed to be "iwata micron level". Now, I do not have micron or tried one ever but this PS-770 airbrush is definitely much better airbrush in my hands than the HP-CH has been. I am in *love. :)* It has a much finer and smoother spray.
@douglassmith58337 жыл бұрын
I dropped my brand new PS-770 on its needle very quickly and had to replace it. Good luck finding OEM (?) needle. I have the Iwata 0.18 mm needle now and it works, but is way too short. It was difficult to install and I haven't removed it since. BTW, this airbrush is sweetness indeed. It is small and smooth. Very precise feel. I like the size and weight. I wish I read Japanese, since the documentation is minimal.
@foxmulderms7 жыл бұрын

Sorry but with such compressor operation and without large air storage so constant pressure you can not draw firm conclusions for the airbrushes and this is not fair

Sorry but I've been running this airbrush on a tanked compressor for 4 years and my take stands. Furthermore, changes in temperature and humidity make a FAR bigger difference in spray performance than having a tank.

Interesting comment you make about the cars, because that is exactly what they are doing with cars, that this company is doing with airbrushes. Lamborghini is owned by Audi and Ferrari is owned by Fiat. So you are getting a Fiat with a Ferrari label on it and so on. Same with electronics they are all made by Samsung, i.e. Apple iPhone is a Samsung in a different bra and heels. Same with clothes. We are the dupes that fall for the brand nonsense, because it is plain economics at the core of it. Make all the shit in the same place, and give different labels to the quality grades: the good stuff gets all the sexy labels, the shit gets all the budget store labels. LG is Sony, Lexus is Toyota.... the consumers are morons that have to take what they are given....

Actually iswata bought their design from Olympos in the 80s, and like all japan airbrush company they all sources their manufacturing from Richpen/Fuso Seiki. Iwata dont actually have a airbrush manufacturing facility so doesnt any of the other japanese hobbybrand, all sourced from Richpen (tho iwata does have the design rights of the original micron).
