Doom (2016) - Ultra-Nightmare - No Upgrades

Doom on Ultra-Nightmare difficulty without any upgrades!
The graphic settings are different for this run compared to my previous ultra-nightmare run. I changed to ultra settings and 105 FOV (120 FOV is max, my other video was 90). I also reduced the bitrate\quality of the recording a bit to reduce the size\upload time. I also removed glory kill highlight, compass and changed crosshair.
No upgrades are:
No weapon upgrades
No armor upgrades
No runes
No argent cells (first cell is forced)
And no use of glitches\sequence skips, as that would make it trivial.
No weapon upgrades does a lot less damage.
The armor upgrades are very useful for preventing massive damage from barrels and self-rockets, and also missing faster weapon switch as well as more effective powerups\grenades. A single barrel or a face rocket can end your run very quickly.
No runes will not allow me to grab runes like for example saving throw which gives me a second chance, rich get richer which gives me infinite ammo, or equipment powerup which allows me to get armor from the siphon grenades.
No argent cells gives me a lot less health, armor and ammo. I can't afford to lose my health from the mega health powerups later on, as I can't go over 100\50 from pickups. The lack of ammo makes it very important to be aware of where the ammo pickups are and not to waste the chainsaw ammo.
This Ultra-Nightmare run is over an hour faster than my previous one, the main reasons are because I play a lot better, I know where to go and without upgrades I don't have to spend any time doing rune challenges, grabbing secrets etc.
Why did I decide to do it without upgrades? Apparently a lot of people have beaten it now on ultra-nightmare, so I figured I'd take it a step further. But the main reason is because it's a very fun way to play the game! I play a lot more aggressive this time and I don't end up just using gauss cannon with rich get richer rune to clear everything late game.

Misc:
Previously I've died at the cyberdemon to a very strange attack combo that I don't think should be possible, I also died at the hell guardians, I didn't practice the fight properly and without upgrades it was more difficult than last time.
I had a crash at the start of the 4th level, never happened there before. I didn't have any other crashes besides that and fortunately it happened at the start of the level.

I think this is the best way to play the new Doom game. No use of weapon mods, upgrade points, Runes, collectables etc. Just get to the end and don't die, the story of Doom Guys life.

Your video is a work of art. It was really fun to watch someone with your level of skill. I've watched many play-through videos and this is by far the best I've seen. It seem like the enemies do lots more damage but some seem to die easier. Your skill level and accuracy may mean I had the perception that enemies were easier to kill. I was watching carefully and your health was always very high and only a few times did you lose armor. Thanks for a entertainment.

Just to highlight what others have already said, all the action and skill i've seen in this run (plus the world first ultra nightmare run) are GODLIKE. Kudos to you! As a suggestion, I'd say trying the run with no HUD display and cursor, then I think you would be BEYOND legend! Would be looking forward to seeing that! But even if I don't CONGRATS...never seen such skill in aiming and world awareness!

Thanks for the vid - it made me appreciate DOOM even more now that I see how tightly balanced the campaign is. And the vid is just INSANE! No uprgrades under 4 hours is mighty impressive even for UV (for us the mere mortals but even for seasoned veterans No Upgrades on just Nightmare is like WOOOOW), you have my respect. ZM if you read this do you think id playtested it on Nightmare w/o upgrades before release? Do you think UN can be beaten with No Upgrades Pistol Only? I think Bethesda should reward at least 50 grand USD to anyone who can pull that off :D

Nice to look up these "old" videos when I'm stuck on True-Slayer UN for months already. (All Ammo upgrade, upgraded and mastered Pistol, Vacuum, fully upgraded Equipment and Dexterity but no weapon mods, no other runes, no other Praetor Suit upgrades and no upgrades to Health and Armor.)

You have a very pleasing style of aiming. This is very Unreal Tournament meets Quake 3 style, with a dash of Half-Life DM, or Team Fortress. I haven't finished watching this just yet so I won't comment on the achievement itself right now, but I'm curious what your gaming background is now. u high, gauss cannon is one of the best weapons. Also rich get richer is just another form of cheat code like idkfa. Infinite ammo for all weapons.

These 2 things made the game way easier that was lame to play, at least i felt it like that. I had more troubles at the beginning of the game than at the end.

Keeping your distance from the imps unless you know they won't be able to hit you before you can kill them is probably best to avoid dying there. Explosive shot with the shotgun if you have that is also very effective there.

I also recommend you circle around the area, it works great surprisingly. Also like Zero mentioned, the Explosive shot is your best friend when it comes to the imps in the early stages of the game, and even later on.

Keep running back and forth on the high catwalk (not the highest one), this way it is hard to get surrounded, and you have a savety option to jump down.
