While I haven't played Doom 3: BFG, the general consensus is that it's confused. They changed things to make it feel like the older Doom games with much higher stamina, an independent flashlight, and more ammo. However, Doom 3 was built around a survival horror principle which meant that encounters were designed under the impression that players wouldn't have tons of ammo at any given occasion. As a result, Doom 3: BFG is understood to be too easy and still not enough like a Doom game to be considered better than vanilla Doom 3.

@ThatTravGuy4 жыл бұрын
The resolution of the textures were high enough that the compressed textures didn't bother Me. I only really care about uncompressed textures if the resolution is low, like in classic Doom, quake, and so on. And yeah, the lighting in D3's engine is still really impressive, even today.

9:47 We still use PDAs in real life: they’re called ipads. The main difference is that an ipad PDA is less chunky than older models, much like how before the 90s and early 2000s, cellphones used to be huge. Doomguy’s PDA and Lara Croft’s one in Tomb Raider Legend actually both resemble ipads, right down to the single big button on the front and the touchscreens.

The way I personally approach Doom 3 is by seeing it as a doom game except if it was realistic. You're a basic marine and not like a demigod, unlike the recent doom games. The environment was believable and Hell in this game actually felt like something dark and twisted. I also wouldn't say this game failed at doing horror because they are many moments that are downright disturbing and creepy. One detail that makes Doom 3 stand out from all of the other Doom games is its atmosphere and ambience. The sound design is impeccable and if you listen to it, it really makes you feel uneasy. It's a great alternate story of Doom and I honestly think it was very good.

One thing I always keep in mind is something can be boring and cliche to an adult, but HORRIFYING to a child. I mean to me even as an adult I really don't like playing horror games, dead space was so hard for me to get through, System Shock, Bioshock, all these games just are hard for me to do, but man Doom 3 just horrified me as a kid. It genuinely felt like I was going to some hellscape nightmare. IMO making something that is horrifying to kids is a good accolade. Like this shit helped form my sense of fear so. That and Myst, Myst also absolutely horrified me as a kid.

What a lot of people don't realize is that DOOM 3 is what John Carmack and id Software wanted to originally make with DOOM 1 and DOOM 2, but the technology was not available at the time to make it happen, but when the technology did become available, they finally made the DOOM game they wanted to always make. DOOM 3 is actually still my favorite survival horror first-person shooter game ever and my favorite horror game of all time. To me, its the perfect horror game and it does everything a horror game needs to do, with no drawbacks. It's a great classic game. To this very day, there is still nothing quite like it. When DOOM 3 (2004 survival horror first person shooter) came out in 2004, it set a new bar in the game industry with brand new innovations, standards, technologies, concepts, and ideas that were never seen before, that majorly influenced and changed the game industry forever, and which all future first person shooter games, horror games, and games in general, would proceed to follow and be inspired from, and continue to do so to this very day. DOOM 3 was considered to be a very technologically advanced game for its time, that used technologies, concepts, techniques, and ideas, which were never seen before prior to it's release, which inspired all future games in general. DOOM 3 had such a major impact on the game industry, that many of the games that came out after DOOM 3, would have either never existed, or would have been drastically different from what they turned out to be, if it were not for DOOM 3 existing. DOOM 3 was an absolute technological marvel when it first released, and it was the most technologically advanced game ever made at the time of release in 2004, shoulder to shoulder with Half-Life 2 (GOTY). Critics praised the graphics of DOOM 3, which included realistic textures for floors and ceilings. DOOM 3 used the id Tech 4 game engine (Which was a brand new engine at the time and DOOM 3 was the first game to ever use it), and the id Tech 4 game engine was later licensed to other developers, who were interested in using it, due to how cutting edge and advanced it was, and what the technology/capability of the engine would allow them to create in their games. DOOM 3 was both a critical and commercial success, selling over 3.5 million copies in 2004 alone. (As of November, 2024, DOOM 3 has obviously sold millions upon millions of more copies, since the year of 2004). DOOM 3 was the best and most awarded horror game of 2004 (and was actually the 3rd most awarded game of that year entirely, only being beaten out by Half-Life 2 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the Game of the Year award), and DOOM 3 actually beat both Half-Life 2 (GOTY) and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 4 categories and won four (4) awards: Best Art Dir…Engine, Best Sound Effects, Best Sound Editing in a Game Cinema, and Best Lighting/Texturing, while also being nominated for many other awards as well. DOOM 3 was easily the best looking game in 2004, and was the 3rd Most Awarded Game of 2004 according to the National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers, where it won 4 awards over every other game released for 2004, including BEST Art Dir…Engine, BEST Lighting/Texturing, BEST Sound Editing in a Game Cinema, and BEST Sound Effects. That means that in terms of lighting/texturing, art direction/engine, sound editing in a game cinema, and in sound effects, DOOM 3 was the most advanced/best game of 2004, unmatched in those aspects by anything else released at the time. Only two games in 2004 got more awards than DOOM 3, which were Half-Life 2 (GOTY) and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which won 5 awards, opposed to DOOM 3, which won 4 awards. As of November, 2024, DOOM 3 on Metacritic has a rating of 87/100 for the PC version, and 88/100 for the Xbox version, which shows that on average, it's critically considered a great game overall. DOOM 3 and id Software deserve a lot of credit in what they have achieved and what they have inspired, and continue to achieve and inspire to this very day. A lot of your favorite games that came out after DOOM 3, may have never existed, or turned out drastically different, if it were not for the existence of DOOM 3 and id Software.

Something HIGHLY underrated about this game is the track "mars city" it's so freaking good, it combines emotional elements that we feel (or were supposed to feel anyway) in Doom 3 and Doom in general, it's a mix between suspense, horror, action, story and challenge. This track is so good in fact that Mick gordon remixed and it was going to be in Doom eternal, although due to pacing issues and the track not fitting with the level that is was supposed to play (mars core If I remember correctly) it was removed, but still is here on youtube, it's called Arriving on Mars and it's a BLAST, seriously one of the best Doom tracks ever

Reviewing this game from a modern standpoint is honestly kinda unfair. When it came out it was pretty well loved and a crazy technical achievement. There wasn't this idea that it needed to be just like the other Doom games yet, as people had been playing the original for years and were excited for something new. There was no shortage of action heavy fps Doom clones at the time and when this was announced and details began releasing people were stoked. I loved it when I first played it and so did everyone I knew at the time. It wasn't until years later when the ideas and game mechanics like sprinting and reloading combined with a less arcadey/speedy feel had become completely oversaturated that people started shit*ing on Doom 3 and saying it wasn't a "doom game". We had yet to hit this classic shooter renaissance that has been going on for awhile now and at the time the break from the usual formula was pretty well embraced. I think part of why people feel some sort of way about 3 is also because many people had to wait YEARS to play it because to have the proper experience you needed a serious pc and pc gaming was much more niche. And by then there were a bunch of games that felt pretty simmilar. That, or they weren't off the bottle even when the game released. Idk, I loved it back in the day and have always been a huge fan of the franchise. But saying that, playing it back today, especially after the release of doom 2016 and eternal, it does feel a bit standard and awkward at times. But at the time it was quite fresh and THE pc game for serious players. Even with the release of Half Life 2 it was much more beloved than it is today and not that controversial.

Correct. It's a great classic game. To this very day, there is still nothing quite like it. It's still my favorite horror game ever. It just does everything a horror game should do. A lot of your favorite games that came out after DOOM 3, may have never existed, or turned out drastically different, if it were not for the existence of DOOM 3 and id Software, which includes the newer DOOM games: DOOM (2016), DOOM ETERNAL, and the upcoming DOOM: THE DARK AGES. Fun Fact: Before ID settled on "Doom3" a potential name considered was "Doom: Hello Darkness My Old Friend" but apparently the cost of naming it that in reference to the song was to expensive. They even had a gameplay trailer demo cut up to a dark metal slower version of the song similar to Disturbed's. So you know, explains a lot about why the game was so dark. This was something that they had been wanting to do for quite a while, you see evidence of it in lighting in levels from Doom 1 and 2. Romero even brings it back for both Sigil episodes and most likely will for "Hellan" or whatever his new Doom 2 episode will be named. Doom 64 even has it. *Source: I made it the f up! 😹😹😹😹😹😹

Fun fact: the Doom 3 logo implies Doom "cubed," or the power of three exponent. This algebraic integer is essential in determining solutions for complex numerical problems inherent in graph theory, higher dimensional mathematics and fractal geometry; a short hand application for multi-dimensional space, including third dimensions. As such, the title is allusive (self-referential?) to three-dimensional based computer graphics, which was new to the Doom series. Convoluted summary perhaps, but I thought everyone knew this :/

@8:10 "Actually, that's a good point. Who does this game even appeal to?" That throwaway line? IMHO, it's actually the very core problem with doom 3. It's a survival horror lite mixed with a corridor shooter all wearing the doom logo. As far as whether or not it's a decent survival horror type game, I can leave that judgement up to people that like those genres more than I do. It's just a fundamentally lousy doom game though. To be blunt, if they did not use the doom title, I do think it would have gotten a fairer shake. The doom title did help them market the game, but it marketed the game to the wrong crowd and set expectations in the wrong places.

Then as I really got immersed in the game I would turn a corner around the quiet facility and I would hear the screams of the monsters and spiders and I would quietly scream wishing for them to stop coming. I would cower in the corner, but they still found me, there was no safe zone. So the one thing I disagree with is your assessment of the shotgun. I never liked Doom 3's shotgun. It felt weak compared to the Doom/Doom II/Doom 64 versions, and the inconsistency in the number of hits it took to kill enemies was even more drastic than before. It also lacked the distance sniping precision of the old Doom shotguns, and I ended up using the machinegun for that purpose most of the time (and to take down zombies with guns). It never made sense to me that they didn't include the super shotgun in the base game and only introduced it in the expansion.
@ThatTravGuy4 жыл бұрын
Oh I totally agree (I didn't realize the specifics of how bad it was until after my review), but I think the shotgun works for what D3 is trying to be. Not saying it's great, again, I didn't care for the game much anyways
@MrOllievirus4 жыл бұрын
Lets be honest Dooms shotgun, whilst awsome, is utterly OP. Doom 3's weapons are all designed in service to the horror aspect of the gameplay. The shotgun is a high risk/reward weapon that is devestating at point blank range against imps but ineffective at range. Conversley the machinegun is better at range but takes vital seconds to down foe's. Its actually really good design. I often think that ID would of been better served not calling it Doom and changing the enviroment to a spacestation or somthing instead. I often feel that D3 has far more in common with Systemshock 2 than it does with OG doom.

To be completely honest, what dates Doom 3 the most out of anything else was the original Dead Space coming out four years later. Dead Space, of course, being basically Doom 3's concept but done perfectly and better in every way; a sci-fi space-based horror game with a heavy focus on gore, darkness, and satanic/religious imagery. When I first played the game back in 2004, I didn't even notice any of the shortcomings and faults that people point out. I was a Doom fanatic since the original Doom in 1993 and I was just so excited to be playing a new Doom game. I actually appreciated the more slow-paced, grounded and realistic take on the story and setting. Classic Doom is vastly superior of course, but I thoroughly enjoyed Doom 3. And I thought it was truly frightening. I played at night time, lights off, with stereo headphones. There was many times where I looked away from my monitor, glancing behind me and all around my room, in a sort of panic. Pure adrenaline and fear. It was incredible.

I wouldn't say that Doom 3 failed to be scary because this game is freaking creepy, the fact that this game literally laughs at your suffering and it just thinks it's hilarious to throw you in a dark room with a demon that could pop out at any moment through the pitch black and nearly kill you in two hits.

So I'm coming back to this 4 years later, having recently started tinkering with modding Doom 3 for the first time, and I have to say: as much as I like to tinker with weapon and enemy balance, the one thing that most improves the vanilla Doom experience is to flesh out its dynamic lighting. Everyone knows you got the flashlight, and most guns have a tiny bit of muzzle flash when fired, but I noticed in the original game's files that a LOT of projectiles and other effects have leftover signs of dynamic lighting data that had variously been commented out and/or set to null values. You re-add those to both the player's projectiles any enemy projectiles (not many enemy projectiles beyond the basic imp's fireballs have dynamic lighting set), make muzzle flashes a bit more prominent (and definitely give Z-sec and commandos muzzle flashes when they lack it), work out how to script lost souls and other flaming enemies to have a dynamic light attached to them, maybe add flashes of dynamic lighting to bullet impacts if you're feeling daring (also change them from using tracer defs that don't seem to work anymore if they ever worked at all, set the projectile to use the tracer as its model instead to make it visible again), and the game's atmosphere during combat shoots up dramatically. As a bonus (especially if you also turn down muzzle smoke/rocket-trail smoke a bit, like what the chaingun and rockets badly need), having more lighting going on during combat goes a long way towards mitigating the "flashlight simulator" thing that game's kinda infamous for even if you eschew duct tape mods. I get the strong impression that id wanted to play around with dynamic lighting a lot more back in 2004 but dummied out a good chunk of it to not melt computers of the era (maybe the Xbox version uses it more? I dunno).
