Yes, you can also throw grenades and blow up the mines too. It really makes those sections easier. They also make them in a grid pattern I think, so think of a series of equidistant points based off of mines you have blown up, almost like a big version of minesweeper.

25:00 Actually, here's an interesting fact! Humans, when pulled up by barnacles, can in fact be saved, so long as the barnacle is killed before it Gibs them. This also explains why it isn't an instant kill for the player, despite the only unarmored part of their body being digested. However, your statement is accurate to HL2, where NPC's do actually die on contact (most likely due to Valve needing them to ragdoll. Thank you, Marphy Black!). So there you go.

Not sure if anybody pointed this out yet but there are two things about the grunts and the minefields that Trav forgot in the video: At 15:32 the grunt isn't scripted. There are different types of grunts in the game, and this one in particular wears a helmet which shields him from all bullets. Usually when I see these guys I just shoot at the body instead. At 26:29 you can actually clear the minefields with either grenades, C4s or just shoot into the ground to detonate the mines and clear a path.

Hey! So I played HL1 when it first came out - it was a hell of an experience back in the day. One of the biggest draws was that it did NOT require a 3D accelerator card like a Voodoo to run - and even my slow HP Pavilion with an AMD 333 MHz PC could play it decently, albeit at low resolutions.

On that section with the "Ninja assassins" (Just before you get ambushed and dropped in the waste disposal), I've found that the easiest way to deal with the hyperactive little A holes is to go in the room on the left, put trip bombs on both doors, and hide behind a crate. Every time an assassin trips a mine, pop back up and replace it. I think there are either 4 or 5 of them running about in there, but you can easily get them all if you've got the full quota of the mines.

@@TylertheCC1010fan I didn't know that. The short moments when they're stood still to shoot at me is about the only time I can get a few shots off at them. That's why I usually just mine the entrances to that little store room and let them blow themselves up. I tried HL on the hardest level a few times, but didn't even get close to that section before realising I lacked the quick aiming accuracy needed not to run every gun out of ammo before I'd managed to kill groups of moving enemy's. :(

Half-Life is a weird one because if you weren't there when it came out it can be hard to see just what's so special about it. But if you were there, it was life changing. It was an immersive experience like no other. It changed the way people thought about video games. Every once in a while I play a game that makes all other games feel inferior for a while when I'm finished with it and Half-Life was one of those games.

18:13 in a map I'm working on I have a similar situation where the player breaks open a wall with the crowbar and jumps down into a vent, to prevent the player taking damage I put a push trigger right on top of the vent that pushes the player up softening their fall so they dont take any damage, I wish valve had done the same here 🙄

Actually, you get the revolver from blast pit, when you go down the tentacle hole and land in the water, on the surface is a rim with a dead security guard with the revolver. Also, the solution to mines is to shoot them to remotely detonate them.

The "Power Up" mission was definitely glitched with the closed gate in my recent playthrough. I luckily found an answer in some forum to only break the crates blocking the machinery, but not to turn on the power switch on the upper level past the electricity obstacle. And it worked.

The hitscanning soldiers were the best part of the game. This was before Call of Duty, and military action shooters didn't exist before this. There was no other game where you could jump and run around realistic environments fighting grenade-chucking soldiers with an MP5. Hell, the fact that you were fighting US Marines was kinda groundbreaking and controversal, this was long before Spec Ops the Line.

12:31 This happens because a _lot_ of old things that worked as intended in WON Half-Life were broken in the transition to Steam Half-Life, I could make a list but we'd be here for a bit. Thankfully none of it affects gameplay but it really is a shame how much stuff is botched.

Trav, you don't first get the revolver in Power Up, you get it in Blast Pit. Directly about that water section in the tentacle pit, there's a dead Barney with a revolver and an ammo box for it. Also, it's not that the bounce pads don't work, it's that you have to jump over them to get the boost properly. The game isn't being bad, you are.
