Thanks a lot for covering the project, Sega Lord X!!! Vic has worked like a madman on it, with Chilly Willy (Joseph Fenton) always providing additional Genesis' 68000-related code that allowed us to have the link mode working, for example. Wavy, Matt B (matteusbeus), and others have supported us in different tasks. The project is a complete rewrite based on Jaguar's Doom source code + some reverse-engineered code from other console ports based on JagDoom. Vic has fixed several JagDoom bugs and improved upon that code. He has put a ton of effort into optimizing the Doom code to run on both 32X's SH2 CPUs and squeeze every bit the 32X can offer. We have version 2.1 in the works. Please, stay tuned. And, again, thanks a lot for the coverage!

Congrats on your project! I had no idea this was even being attempted! How does performance conpare between 32X and Jaguar?
@abaroners2 жыл бұрын
@@DomOsborne According to my tests here and the information I have on both versions: Jaguar Doom: - Runs at 160px wide internal resolution (known as 'low detail" mode BITD since it doubles pixels horizontally). - At 60Hz, framerate usually varies from 12fps to 20fps (the framerate is capped at 20fps) but it can dip lower than 10fps in crowded shootings; especially in Ultra Violence and Nightmare difficulties. - No in-game music and mono sound effects with no envelope (volume) control. - Simplified/cut-down sound propagation algorithm, resulting in more stationary enemies/less aggressive AI when compared to the original PC DOS Doom. - Doesn't have spectre; the partially invisible demons. - Doors and lifts animate at 15fps (the same for PS1 Doom) Doom 32X Resurrection since v2.0: - Can run both at 160px wide (and lower) and up to 320px (matching the original resolution of PC DOS Doom) (higher than PS1 version which runs at 256px wide). - At 60Hz, 160px mode targets 30fps and reaches it quite frequently. I'd say the framerate is 20-30fps for the most part but dips to 15fps in more crowded rooms in UV and Nightmare difficulties. 320px targets 20fps and runs with a similar performance to Jaguar Doom's 160 px. - Stereo in-game music (6 FM stereo channels from YM2612 + 4 PSG mono channels from SN76489) using the Genesis hardware and mimicking the original Roland SC-55 compositions; 8 sound effects channels (which are independent of the music ones) using 32X's PWM with full stereo panning and envelope control. - Sound propagation algorithm similar to the original PC DOS release, resulting in more aggressive and dynamic AI. - Has spectre, with the same visual effect you see in PC DOS Doom. - Doors and lifts animate at 30 fps. I'd also add that in Jaguar Doom you can notice some micro pauses during gameplay when it has to load more complex game data; that doesn't occur in Doom 32X Resurrection.

I was always a big fan of the 32x and it was crazy to me at the time that just a simple attachment would be able to upgrade the hardware fairly substantially. And this here is just more proof that the 32x was never fully utilized to its fullest and was a very capable piece of hardware. Thanks for the video!

I had the 32x and CD too. The problem is, that next generation hardware combined with old hardware will still have the bottleneck of old hardware. Plus introducing all the cables and the prices to buy. Instead Sega should have introduced a Sega Mega Drive/Genesis III with base console + 32X + CD as a single console package with single cable. It was where I was first introduced to Doom and the machine has always held a soft spot in my heart. Knowing how much of a failure it was I've always been on the lookout for some unreleased cancelled game, fan project or home-brew that could really show off the potential of the hardware and this project absolutely nails it. I've been playing it recently and every time I see it running full screen I can't believe it's running on the real hardware, totally surpassed my expectations and the team behind this should be very proud of what they've achieved.

The 32x CD (or Neptune CD) was set to come out with a $199 price tag-or $149 without the CD attachment. Sega of Japan canceled it and 29 more 32X titles because they wanted to put everything behind the Saturn. The problem was that the Saturn was only marginally better than the PlayStation and 32X CD for graphics, and its rushed launch titles looked terrible.
@lazarushernandez58272 жыл бұрын
@@MaxAbramson3 They should not have developed the Saturn and 32X separately. The 32X should have been a cartridge based Saturn that was backwards compatible with the Genesis. Bring it at $250 (it was meant to compete with the Jaguar). Then you do a proper Saturn launch, and release a 2X CD attachment that let's you play Saturn disc games on this 32X/Neptune. This way they would have brought their current 16 bit owners forward to their new 32 bit line. This is looking great! 32X Doom was how I was originally introduced to the Doom franchise way back in the day, and while in hindsight the original port was noticeably heavily nerfed, it was still enough to make me a huge fan to this day. The thing that ticked me off the most about the 32X version (and one thing that I've never heard anyone else talk about anywhere) is not just that that there were fewer levels, but I recall the instruction manual actually lying about "how to unlock the later levels" toward the back of the book implying that more existed. It mentioned that you needed to beat all 15 of the original maps (E1 and E2), but all you unlocked when you did that was E2's secret level (the one with the Barons and Cacodemons) and then the game ended after this. No Cyberdemon fight, E3 levels or Spider Mastermind. I just remember this irked me to no end playing the game all the way through over and over thinking I was doing something wrong to not get the later levels to unlock. I guess you could chalk it up to the tighter deadline, plus the lack of communication and proofreading coupled with the rush to print out the manuals early before they had to make the level cuts. No idea.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: This is the Doom the 32X could have had, if Sega had left Carmack to his work. Instead of DEMANDING it be ready by the 32X's release.

And if Carmack left Bagley to his original work then we could have gotten a better version of Doom on the Saturn then what it actually got.
@SomeOrangeCat2 жыл бұрын
@@ENiceGeo That we don't know for sure. Carmack might have been spot on about the texture warping. Polygon wiggle was a huge turn off for me during that console gen. Just pulled me right out of some games. The fact of the matter is, until that specific engine is recreated on the Saturn by Bagley, its his word vs Carmack's.

@@SomeOrangeCat A little graphical imperfection would have been preferable to the subpar frame rate and sluggish control.

@@SomeOrangeCat Has Carmack ever denied Bagley's claims? He would know first hand if it was true or not.

DOOM 32X wasn't bad for early 32X release. The problem is that SEGA wasn't able to deliver a steady stream of good games for this platform. They should at least release more ID Software games. DOOM 2, Heretic, Hexen and they could license engine itself to make games. They could do Sonic 3D in DOOM engine easily just look at various Sonic mods for DOOM.

By the way, Oh Lord of Segas and X's, have you heard about Final Fight Ultimate? It's a Genesis port of Final Fight, without add-ons. It's not finished yet (and it may never be if Capcom complains), but it looks really good so far. So does Mega Man: The Sequel Wars, which has a demo version available.

Yup. Hoping it gets finished.

And speaking of "why play old crap when pc can run it on 68k at 1920 fps" kind of people. It's kind a pointless to explain anything about retro tech and gaming to them. They just don't understand it as concept 3 times of 4. Good part it's they usually don't care about it and ignore that type of topics)

I only learnt of this project last night and came straight here to see what you had to say! I can only echo what you said, I played this last night for a few hours on real hardware with the everdrive and its honestly just an incredible piece of work. I wonder what scope there is for further level packs.. Doom 2 levels have been previously hacked into the original game, it would be cool to see resurrection expand in the future for that or final doom. God bless the homebrew community!

Funny thing happened when I first played doom back in the day. I started with PS1 version,and didn't no about archvile untill Xbox. What a awesome surprise. Great video SLX🤟

Dude I love the new intro, not sure when you introduced it but I just saw it. Anyway, I really hope he ports Doom Resurrection to the Saturn. I think it would be a more true-to-the-original port than the official 32-bit ports, the increased clockspeed alone would help it run better. If he wanted to he could also use the VDPs to handle sprites and sky textures to free up more headroom, but it's not even necessary. Oh and 2.1 just dropped a couple of days ago!

Some ppl will just never understand that the hardware you play on can affect the experience just as much as the game itself. No, it's not as smooth or high res as the latest PC port, but that really doesn't matter. There's a fun factor associated with experiencing stuff like this on older game hardware that we grew up with. Yes, it's very much a nerd thing and it's not for everyone, but those of us who do care about these old consoles still love the HELL out of stuff like this!
