Doom 64 (2020) - Watch Me Die! Single Segment Speedrun in

Doom 64 PC version on Watch Me Die! (WMD) difficulty. No saves/loads/deaths this time, and a better time! Played a bit safe in some areas, just wanted to get my first deathless run out of the way. Also skipped the completely free soulsphere at the start of holding area to skip the blinking lights for anyone out there who have problems with that (assuming they didn't die during my last video of course).
I haven't yet played the lost levels, I've been really enjoying this game so I'll probably do that soon, maybe I'll do a run of it as well afterwards.

Some comments:
Alpha Quandrat: Terrible time, which isn't a surprise since the platform part is complete bs. I will definitely skip the rocket spam on the barons next time.
Even Simpler: What a disaster, didn't manage to spawn block a baron, decided I'd grab the mega armor at 168 armor since I don't really need it later.. but then I took insane damage before even getting the invulnerability. Very fortunate to survive, had to take the next level slow at the start.
Pitfalls: Had a lot of health near the end so I could skip the soulsphere, then I took a lot of damage before going for the exit so I had to go get it anyways :)
Unholy Temple: I screwed up the linedef skip on the yellow key here, completely forgot about how close it was. I've never actually killed the cacodemons before, but I'll be happy with not doing something really dumb like dying to the turrets on the outside while killing the cacodemons.
The Absolution: Was a bit unlucky I think, one of the imps was chilling too much and showed up late for work/his rocket.

While Doom 64 gives a few nice retouches to the old game... It just doesn't feel like enough to warrant a play-through of it. Also, the maps are kinda bland.

Wicked run. I've always preferred the overall vibe of doom64 to all the others. It's creepy and ominous all the way. Obviously the new Doom games are superior in every other way but this still holds up

Do you have any strategy for learning maps or you just grind through them?

in this case it's mostly just playing through it with saves several times, haven't really optimized the run too well yet and so I mostly focus on surviving first and then just try to get through as quickly as possible otherwise. Of course watching previous runs helps as well to figure things out.

I doubt D3 is pleasant to Zero, like many hardcore classic Doomers. No matter how you cut it, the game is MUCH slower than the frenzy of the originals. The only offshoot that comes even near the old school gameplay is the Phobos mod.

It’s crazy to me how they decided to cut straight to doom 64 from doom 2. Then a couple years later they went back to doom 3. As far as I’ve been able to tell, doom 4 thru doom 63 are still in predevelopment… hugest time skip that I’m aware of in any video game franchise.

My top favorite games: 3: doom 1 2: doom 64 1: doom 2 So doom 64 is my 2nd favorite and it is a very very cool game. Doom 2 is first place because of the epic music and the fact that some of the enemies arnt removed (like in doom 64 like the arch vile is gone for example) and also all of the mods you can get for doom 2. Doom 64 is beautiful tho. I must say though, that blasting a pinky in doom 64 with a super shotgun is quite satisfying. Doom 1 is very great, just ya know no super shotty and the enemies but I still like doom 1

They put out an official rerelease of the game on PC and consoles, and they added an extra set of levels you can play (I think 8 regular levels in their own self-contained episode, and a new challenge level). I thought they were pretty fun.

@@0neDoomedSpaceMarine that would be my guess as well, but still odd to me. In certain places the game looks fairly impressive, but the SSG is a massive zit on the nose.

@@MrCantStopTheRobot They use a lot of clever tricks for that, like applying coloration to different textures and flats to get more variation, and a lot of textures (like many doors and decorative wall textures) are actually just halves which they mirror. They get an all new monster by just making a new imp which they recolor with a palette, and the projectiles the final boss uses are recycled from the torch flames and seeking fireball traps. I think the Doom 64 cartridge only held like 12mb, and consider that the sprites for the monsters are often slightly larger than in the original. You had to do a lot of optimization to get the most out of cartridges back then, because most kinds didn't hold a lot, and higher capacity ones would make the game more expensive for you to manufacture, and more expensive for the consumer to buy, so going pedal to the medal and making something like a 64mb cartridge may make for a net loss. N64 games were already more expensive than other 5th gen console games.

Perfect Dark used a 32mb cartridge, but Goldeneye actually just used a 12mb cartridge, and it's impressive that they fit such a full 3D game like that in there, considering just how many leftovers from development are hidden in the ROM, stuff you can only see if you poke around in there with a GameShark or with some kind of 3rd party software. I think the most impressive game on the N64 in terms of compression and optimization would be Resident Evil 2, I could go on, but I'd say to just link this instead: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resident_Evil_2#Nintendo_64
