Following most of your tips on Doom Eternal lead me to accomplish something I didn't even know I could do : finish Doom 2016, Doom Eternal and the fucking DLC in nightmare difficulties. You would have asked me just a few month ago and I would have say "nah, nightmare is too hard for me, I just want some fun", but now I got gud, so gud in fact that I'm having fun ONLY in nightmare difficulty now! It's very rewarding to see how my gameplay got very intense and funnier than before simply by mastering the quick swapping weapons and have a real use of my whole arsenal, something I thought was just completely out of my league! Thank you for that!

But with allstin because he made a video that was encouraging low players to challenge them selves and I went to nightmare and I made a slaughterhouse it was amazing and now I have done the super gore nest master level on ultra nightmare well now I do it for fun because the lack of master levels but the game is fun and I’ll get the dlc soon and I’ll do the dlc on ultra nightmare wish me luck! And good luck with your ultra nightmare stuff it’s gonna be hard.

Can you point out what exactly Mayo said that is "preachy" to you? I also found no mention of 2016, let alone any statements that could be considered "demeaning", so please, show me what lead you to come to that conclusion. Edit: I did find one mention of 2016 at the very start of the video, but I didn't notice any others. And I certainly don't see how what Mayo said at the start demeans 2016. On the subject of wepon mods if you use the equipment fiend rune and miss your flame belch if you have the flaming meat hook it will count as a kill with the flame belch and will help recharge it

I'm currently doing an unfavored mods run to better acclimate myself to things like Micro Missiles and the Energy Shield (also Ice Bomb only cuz I prefer Frags), and when I'm done with that I'm gonna hone my mod switching and grenade toggling until I'm using all my possible options at any given moment.

Well you can do basically any combos he already listed just not as fast. Hes done videos on micromissiles, full auto.. those work well on controller because they don’t require fast switching or precision aim

Console is not too different from PC, just a teeny bit slower. You can still quickswap but it isn't as fast as you'd have to open the wheel for a split second to go to the next weapon, but its still possible.

@@ringo7395 Yes but that costs your accuracy, since you use the analog stick you aim with to choose what weapon you want. On mouse and keyboard, all the weapons can be bound to whatever key you want, and whilst you are switching weapons, you still have full control over aim with the mouse. It is far more viable to just do ballista/ssg, pb/rocket and ballista/pb on console, rather than going ballista/pb/rocket, since that would require using the wheel to switch weapons.

As a pc player who tried a campaign using a gamepad, basically any sustained-fire mod is great--Full Auto, Micro Missiles, Mobile Turret. Hell, you don't even need to quickswap to kill things well. You can stay on SSG or rocket launcher for several seconds and kill them just fine. Oh, and Microwave Beam is always great to hold a problematic enemy in place with to let you get your bearings.

Too slow. Many players are at a high state of panic for a lack of a better word. Standing still or not being able to move around as fast as possible is nerve racking which is why I seldom use it myself.

I am a super casual when it comes to FPS games and I love DOOM Eternal. I bought the game day 1 and also felt that sense of being overwhelmed by all the fighting mechanics and emphasis on resource management. Though I didn't feel the game was too hard, it definitely intimidated this gamer that spends most of his time in sandboxes or RPGs. I would just occasionally play the first few levels over and over to get my fix of bloody demon slaying and that's all I ever wanted from the game. I approach my games differently than a lot of gamers. I like to take my time, so that's how I approached DOOM Eternal. Over this last year I watched videos of people ragging on the Marauders and it put me off on pushing through the main campaign, figuring I would have to get real GUD to beat this game without cheats even on easy mode. Then I started watching your videos and any others I could find that didn't sound like a b*tch session about the game, and it reignited my interest in the game. I'm having a blast learning how to meat hook better and just get better at the DOOM dance in general. I'm still at the "Supershotgun/Ballista" or "Supershotgun/Rocket" combo level of game play, but that's enough for this low-tier player to wreck a Marauder when I get him in my sights. Thanks for all the pointers, Mayo! Keep up the good work!

Yeah, when i started playing DOOM Eternal when it first came out, I never thought I'd EVER use the Microwave beam, or the Destroyer blade. I thought they were too slow and would get me killed half the time. But look at me now! Using the aforementioned mods OVER the Heatblast and the Arballist. I never used the Microwave beam before the release of The Ancient Gods Pt. 1, but that DLC made my eyes open to possibilities and potential of the Microwave beam. You can use this thing to make sure that a dangerous demon stays in place, (This mod is the only way to keep a possessed demon in place) even if you just use it for a split second It can be used on a low health Heavy/Super Heavy to finish them off as well as causing massive damage to demons around them AND falter them. When it's fully upgraded, the range on this thing is NUTS, I mean, you can melt a demon from the safety of a high/far off platform. And the Destroyer blade? HOLY SHIT, WAS I MISSING OUT! This mod is the most flexible, high damaging, most useful mod I have ever used in this game Before it's fully upgraded, its use is admittedly very niche. But once you get the mastery upgrade? OOOOOOH BOY YOU'RE GONNA HAVE A FUN TIME! Even before it's fully upgraded, it's still very useful in a handful of situations, such as. A large group of demons bunched up in a way that the blade can take them all out (or close) in a single shot. But once you do get the mastery, that's where the flexibility come through. Each charge has their own different damage numbers, costs, and blade lengths. Charge one costs 16 Plasma cells, but does the same damage as a regular shot from the Ballista that costs 25 cells, and the length of the blade isn't very wide and leaves a lot to be desired. Charge one can weirdly kill Prowlers and Carcasses in a single shot where the regular shot cannot. I use this charge against large groups of fodder demons and/or Prowlers and/or Carcasses. Charge two costs 33 cells, and does the same amount of damage as an Arballist shot. The length of the blade is much wider and can cover a lot more ground than charge one. Honestly this my least used shot from the Destroyer blade, but it's still very useful against mid tier demons such as Revenants, Hell Knights, and especially Whiplashes (it can put Whiplashes in a stagger state alone). Charge three costs 50 cells, and is the most damaging single shot weapon in the entire game I'm convinced (even beating out the Super Shotgun), and the length of the blade is VERY wide, it covers A LOT of ground. This bad boy can put every heavy demon to shame (except the Pain Elemental which I will get into later) and puts most of the Super Heavies on the ropes, I mean you can use this monster against a frozen Archvile, and they'll be a Super Shotgun shot and a quick rocket close to death. I LOVE the Destroyer blade so much, and I am SHOCKED it took me as long as I did to use it, because if it's used correctly, it completely and utterly destroys certain encounters, but i guess that's its downside, if it's used incorrectly or inefficiently, the demons will punish you hard (especially on Nightmare). Side note: The Pain Elemental is shockingly resilient to the Destroyer blade, kinda surprising considering that they are weak against the Ballista and Arballist, but i don't recall ever seeing in the codex that they're weak to the Destroyer blade so i guess i shouldn't be surprised. Side note 2: Don't use the Destroyer blade against Marauders, they block it every time even if you shoot at them when their eyes are green, so if you wish you could always switch to the Arballist when a Marauder shows up. In conclusion. These mods are great, USE EM! Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention my opinion on the Micro Missiles, Lock-on Rockets, and the Energy Shield I don't use the Micro Missiles, not because they're bad, it's just... PRECISION BOLT + ROCKET LAUNCHER COMBO IS SO SATISFYING AND SO GOOOOOOD! I don't use Lock-on Rockets because it's way too easy and powerful to use, and my muscle memory is used to pulling out the Remote Detonate to falter demons that are getting just a bit too close (or using it to setup a blood punch against a Cyber Mancubus). As for the Energy Shield... It's literally just on demand god mode, and the fact that the Mobile Turret gets beat out in terms of damage just because I started bumping into demons as well as shooting them is just dumb for me. Way to easy to use, and you're literally invincible while doing it.

Update on my opinion of the Energy Shield and another part on my opinion about the Lock-on Rockets. I like using the Energy Shield now because it actually gives me a reason to use the Chaingun, because when I was a avid user of the Mobile Turret I rarely used it. But I still actively stop myself from dashing into enemies while I'm shooting, because I still think it's dumb that it out damages the Mobile Turret (and that it hard falters heavy demons for some fucking reason). Another reason why I don't use the Lock-on Rockets is because it takes up way to much ammo for my taste, and that's pretty much it.

@@Marzo7866 IK its a year later so idk if you still play DE but a fun way to use the energy shield is shield projectile quicklaunch combos. Arbalest -> pull out chaingun and put shield up immediately before it blows up -> shoot until you can launch shield -> launch shield. Arbalest explosion fills the meter for dmg required to launch shield projectile. If you're doing this against a pain elemental, you can shoot the shield off legit almost instantly, and if you follow it up with a rocket, he'll stagger. Ballista primary or meathook->dead-on SSG blast will either stagger or kill him. Cant tell if it was imperfect SSG blasts or shooting him with more/less chaingun making the difference. Either way, if you continue firing chaingun a little longer than you have to before launching the shield, then the SSG should always kill him. If you throw a frag grenade at the PE and get a direct hit, it will still fall towards the ground but sort of "stick" to him as it does, falling slowly enough that the explosion still hits him when it goes off. If you do this at about the same time as you pull out the chaingun then the frag will go off about when the shield projectile hits him, killing him instantly. This combo is great for groups of cacos if you cant hit them all with an arbalest or dblade but can get some with the arbalest explosion. if theres 5 and you can kill 1 with an arbalest and stagger 2 with the explosion, you can pull out CGS, turn and shoot one of the active ones, launch shield. the shield projectile can be used to either stagger active cacos or finish off staggered ones. enough chaingun bullets (not a lot) -> shield projectile -> ballista will kill the caco. not enough bullets will still at least leave it mostly dead. you can fire multiple arbalests before you bring out the chaingun so if they split up you can arbalest a lone caco or the smaller group, arbalest + start shooting chaingun at bigger group, fire shield at them for a multikill, then finish off stragglers. I use dazed & confused so usually they'll still be staggered. You can use the combo on beefy ground enemies too but I recommend going for a headshot with the arbalest, using a frag or two or ice bomb + frag, and maybe firing two arbalests before you pull out the shield. the arbalest explosion alone wont fill as much of the meter when used against a ground enemy of course, so the frag helps it fill faster. If other enemies are near your target to get hit by arbalest explosion, that also helps a lot. this is pretty good against doom hunters (use a blood punch too before you launch the shield), barons, tyrants, and archviles. it does considerable damage quickly, has you blocking for a bit, ends with a falter, and if you time a second grenade right then it chains 2 falters. Also, correction about the chaingun shield. You are not literally invincible, several ground effects can penetrate the chaingun shield including mancubus melee and dreadknight leap slam, and the shield has 650 hp, not infinite. 650 might sound like a lot, because it is, but its very possible to get your shield broken. with some of the master level fights, especially those with buffed demons, the shield can be broken horrifyingly fast. It is dumb that dash smash + chaingun primary is better dps than mobile turret, but so is everything else I'd actually use. I personally use dash smash even tho I admit its OP because I like to go in for a blood punch a lot so I might as well do more damage in the process. And because a frag + blood punch + chaingun shield dash & chaingun primary will also let you launch the shield off really quickly. I dont like to just sit there and bump demons to death with it much though. like, once i can launch the shield I probably will. I rarely use lockon rockets as well. No splash damage, consumes almost 1 quarter of your rockets for 1 enemy, trivializes too many enemies, opens the possibility of wasting 3 rockets on a zombie, and I too am used to having remote detonate equipped so i'll do the same thing. go for a falter, "ahhh shit i left fuckin lockon equipped". I try to just swap back right after i use lockon burst when I do actually use it, but def dont always remember. Also you're so right about PB rocket. its just so much more fun. I started maining remote detonate specifically because I knew I was over-reliant on lockon burst, wanted to get better at quickswapping and aiming. Plus I felt like I knew no other ways to kill a whiplash effectively but couldnt lockon if they were up in my face and like I never actually "fought" the dreadknight, just glanced at him for a sec and went over to finish him off with the glory kill or meathook + SSG. I actually thought the dreadknight was a weak enemy, lmfao. Boy was i wrong. but yeah not using lockon burst constantly was one of the best decisions I made playing this game. now I can actually hit the whiplash, quickswap WAY better, have a much better understanding of falters, and know what combos i can use to kill or stagger each type of heavy. I didnt realize ballista->direct rocket would stagger a whiplash for SO long! and ballista->P->rocket kiIls caco, revenant, AND whiplash. was like "i need to use lockons for whiplashes because I need it dead NOW, this is the only thing that will kill them quickly enough" when it was literally as easy as one, two, three the whole damn time!

I personally really like "mostly" precision bolt (SSG for amor, plasma for shields and stickies for cacos). Why? I like the combination of moving a lot to not get hit/cornered and precise shooting. The delay between the shots forces me into a nice rythm. It's not the best playstyle and definitvely not the fastest, but I get into a really nice flow state with it :)

In Doom (2016) i was obsessed with the micro-missiles mod and i'm happy that Doom eternal made me better if this awesome mod because i really learned how to use it in a very fun and useful way. Different from Doom (2016) that i was sucked into the exploits of the other weapons and almost never used the micro-missiles that i feel in love in the first levels. So Yes i think people who say "Doom eternal has to be played in just one way" are totally lying because this game has far more options then Doom (2016).

I think precision bolt was literally the last weapon mod I unlocked in 2016, and then I realized it was actually quite good. I think I remember someone saying in a vid that all of the "boring" sounding mods for 2016 were a lot more powerful than they originally appeared.

I remember the first time i watched this video. I had bought Eternal at a steam sale earlier this year and played non-stop for about 2 days. After that, i decided to check some videos and gameplays to see other people's opinions on this game, and i eventually found your channel. Not only did this introduce me to the amazing community this franchise as a whole has, but also kinda make me love the game more? It made me want to replay the levels many times and experiment with all of the tools at my disposal, and eventually found my preferred playstyle, staying on the air, constantly meathooking and pretty much bombing hordes with anything explosive at my disposal. Once i got that figured out, i decided to go from exclusively playing Hurt me plenty/UV to trying out Nightmare. Now i have around 375 hours spent and i continue to find new ways to enjoy it. What i'm trying to say is, your videos are a blessing for new players trying to understand this game's mechanics and intricacies. They made me be more confindent in my style and ways to handle arenas and big fights, and to just appreciate everything the game has to offer, so thanks a lot for that!

Excellent stuff - like many people I have dedicated a serious portion of my life to this game since it came out. The truly glorious part about it is (as Mayo demonstrates perfectly) that you can change it up as much or as little as you please - playing with those mods that we are all dismissed when the game came out has breathed new life into it for me. Mayo once said that game developers rarely care this much about the player experience and the depth of thought and planning but into Doom Eternal is mind-blowing, truly people who clearly love what they do. Kudos to Mayo also for his detailed , but entertaining Doom videos, he's definitely inspired me to try a few different strategies - they don't always work but hell, that just makes it all the more fun. One of my favorite quotes from the gaming industry is: “We don’t want you to play Demonology Warlock right now”. Ion Hazzikostas lead game designer for World of Warcraft. He said it back in Warlords of Draenor. One reason was that they weren’t happy with how the spec played. The other reason is for active balancing of the meta-game. They where OK about some options weren’t optimal for a patch. Developers don’t want Rock Paper Scissors balance in their game. They don’t want players to ever master the game. They want players to always learn new interesting ways to play their game. They have no problem breaking a play style of a class to force people to play differently or even re-roll a different class. Everything is to ensure that most players are engage in the gameplay by not making it stale.

The only game I can’t stop playing is the original Doom and Doom 2 because of all the WADs and the different gameplay mods like Project Brutality, Guncaster, Russian Overkill or just Vanilla with no texture filtering.😜🤪 At least I couldn’t stop playing it until my PC crapped out😩. Now I’m playing Dead Cells on my phone.

I like how both DOOM Eternal and Doom (2016) are hectic but also have a dance to it which makes it feel not just like a generic shooter game but a “true” shooter game. Even in the first game there weren’t much movement options since there was no jump (No hate to the first game that was my very first game I ever played)

this is actually great. and thanks for touching on microwave beam; i feel like it is massively underrated for all the utility you touched on and more. also experimentation is good, i've done a few runs of DLC and main campaign using only "off-meta" mods and it's actually a blast and helps you find your playstyle amongst all the options; but even more than that it helps you expand it and polish it and understand it so you can be a better player. and the more success you find in your playstyle the more you engage with the game and the more fun you have. 10/10 video, we are lucky to have you in the community.

I'm just getting into DOOM Eternal. Beat it on UV, then saw some videos of how other people play and got an understanding of the weapon meta. I like trying out different mods and understanding what situations they're good with. Watching your first UN run made it click for me that Micro Missiles have a really good application of dealing with Hell Knights early. So much so in fact that I started thinking about routing the first level to skip auto-shotgun and fast travel back at completion so you get Sticky/Micro/Precision as the mods leaving the first level. Props for talking about this, I think the game is more fun when more mods are used. One of the coolest encounters for this reason alone was the Cyber-Demon corridor in Ancient Gods 1. Made me realize that chaingun shield is really good. I'm happy that id are intentionally designing encounters to mess with the weapon meta and making me think about what to use.

What a great video. I’ve come full circle on the mods I at first didn’t care for. On console, Remote Detonation can be very tricky to use, but Microwave Beam, Energy Shield and Full Auto are must-learns for me. I gives me so many more playthroughs of this addictive game.

What you said at 9:40 was true for me. It was you who I was trying to play like for the past few months and since I got into pc gaming for Eternal, it was all fresh (keybinds) and I wasn't able to get anywhere near what you do. For example I still struggle hard with pb rocket quick swap. For the last 2 weeks or so I sorta dread getting on like its a paper I need to write. Your play is cool and it motivated me to be better for a time but I ended up in the classic mistake of comparing myself to another and it sucked the fun right out. I'm gonna go play on hurt me plenty, spam the SSG and forget to use the flame belch like the good old days- just have a bit of fun. I'll work on quickswaps later.

Exceptional video. I am happy you promote people finding what gets them off from playing a video game. In some speedrun communities I am a part of, there seem to be many people lately completely missing the point of playing games which I can compare to the things you say in the video. A very nice quote that I read somewhere: Inspire others to inspire themselves. Everyone should do what grinds their gears. That is why I do speedruns and sometimes challenge runs. I fucking love it.

Doom it’s just doom that’s the genre it’s the doom of shooters btw dark souls rely on patience more than skill doom needs skill I have little patience with games and I have done eternal’s master level on ultra nightmare because I have skill more than patience I did it in 6 tries so saying its the dark souls of shooters is just wrong it’s not impossible (the dark souls series felt impossible to me) and in doom you know exactly why you died eternal is more like a teacher than an abusive drunk father that just wants to hit you without the reason or what you should do instead when you die in eternal you know exactly why you died and in the next try you’ll go further and become better if you want to argue about eternal being the dark souls of shooters I would like to hear why you think that is

You can beat both just by learning how to avoid taking damage but to reach a higher level and the "fun zone" it require certain knowledge. In doom it's weapon swapping/combo, in souls it's knowing enemy behaviours, stats (esp health/poise threshold) and maps.

Love a good destroyer blade, especially on the secret encounters. Equip it, pull the gore nest apart, jump back & start charging, then just shoot at the first thing that moves. That smashed the "prowler + mancubus in a cupboard" fight near the end of ARC complex for me. I'm only playing on Ultra Violence right now for my first full playthrough, and probably dying a little more than I should. But that's because I'm actively trying to mix up my play style to use more weapons & mods to find a good set of combos for me. I've found a lot of these vids super useful for pointing out the little combos and such, for example until recently I had it in my head that grenades & ice bombs shared a cooldown, so never equipment swapped, and I barely used the SSG at all. I still make basic mistakes, but I'm getting noticeably better at things, even if I need to learn to double check the game hasn't "helped" me after I died by switching the Unmakyr back to the BFG before I pull it out and shoot. Although I will admit, I did handle the Marauder secret encounter with a stagger + BFG combo to get it done in the time, so I'm not THAT precious about my ammo usage for it.

These videos of yours really inspire me to try new play style. Weapon switching in combination with new weapon combo really make the game more fun. I started to look into those mode that not many people use like the full auto mod which had me in awe when I see how quickly it melt a baron. And now with your new lock on + ice bomb + full auto, I can't wait to get into the game and try it out. Same go to the Shield mod of the Minigun, since I’m not a good player with quick reflex, it give me room to breath in hard situation and the falter when dashing it into the enemies, combine it with the slow down time or second wind rune really get me a get out of jail free card

What I really enjoy is that there multiple overlaps between the weapons in delivering enemy weaknesses. You can blow off enemy weakpoints with precision bolt/sticky grenade/etc. Cacos can be staggered by grenades, shotgun stickys, or just dropped with the arbelast. Shields are countered by plasma, or you just chainsaw the loser, or use him as a meathook to manuever around. You can falter demons with upgraded frags, or dashing with the chaingun shield, or plasma microwave. There are four "OH crap I need to stop everything now" type of attacks - blood punch (with shockwave rune), BFG, Crucible Blade, and Icebomb. I mean, yeah I settled on Shotgun/Precision Bolt/Ballista -> lock on Rocket Launcher for big threats but that's because they are efficient. But I've also just had so much satisfaction from the micro missiles, unmaykr, and unloading the 4 barrelled chaingun. The important thing is to find the playstyle that suits your comfort for how you play the game.
