Bobby Prince: "This song was easily named. You wouldn't believe how people in the id Software offices used to line up to watch John Romero play DOOM. Long before the sound effects were in the game, John would provide his own, and he was good at making a lot of sound effects with his mouth. But, the reason that people lined up to watch him play was that he put everything he had into playing the game. If it was a deathmatch, look out! John threw a constant barrage of taunts, screams and other sounds at the opposing players. One day I noticed how quiet things got while people were gathering to watch and I decided to do some pensive music to go with such times. Thus, the song became "Waiting For Romero To Play."
John has now left id Software to form his own company. There are better players at id, but none of them will ever have people lining up in anticipation of watching them play as John did. I know that id Software will sorely miss the manic energy that John Romero provided".

I was into this game as a nerdy teen before I ever listened to Pantera. I didn't listen to Pantera until friends introduced me, then when I heard This Love, my mind flashed to this song. Same goes for several other tracks in the legacy Doom games. I got my stepdad into Doom, then when he got to Map 7, he said, "That music sounds awfully like Slayer."

I don't know if anyone feels that way but playing Doom as a kid with this track in the background it always like this unique kind of "quiet evil". And especially with the riff tails with the scale runups or downs, this sense of losing myself in the calm beauty of evil.

This music fit the Monster Condo level so perfectly. Most of the level was dark, with pools of flickering light here and there. The monsters were often hidden behind false walls and platforms, so when you first hit the level, there were no monsters to be seen. Just darkness, flickering lights, and this music. Awesome.

Probably the game which stuck by me the most throughout the years. Unbelievable what a gem of a game this was, with this song probably being my favourite. Used to play this game with a friend of mine, when I was much too young. I remember getting to ‘the courtyard’ which was a bitch of a level to play in UV-mode. The grim looking level combined with this supporting music was unbelievable. On the short way back to my house i remember looking left and right if there was a mancubus ready to devour me. Unbelievably great times...

Ah, also packed full of neat tricks and traps like the oh-so-empty-LOL library, or the open-ceiling area that is quite well iluminated... My favourite song in Doom II of all time (I prefer the acoustic guitar version the best but this one is still brilliant!)

Fun fact: this song was actually supposed to play in E1M3 but Romero changed it for whatever reason.

I spend so long trying to get every secret in monster condo, like half a hour, only to look up that its only available for 30 seconds after the start of the level. This music now plays in my nightmares

Fondest memory of this song is playing the level The Chasm in Doom 2 and using the music change cheat IDMUS to set the music to this. Eery and awesome.

Context is everything. When you stumble upon the massive chamber filled with hanging corpses in MAP 27, it sounds a lot more sinister, believe me.

I actually don't think this song is creepy or evil sounding at all. It's relaxing and kinda hypnotic to me.

Well, pretty much everyone's first association here would be "This Love" by Pantera and yes, of course, the chord progression and the way the chords are arpeggiated is virtually the same for the most part... But what if I told you that this track is actually a sort of mashup and there's *another* song hidden in there? Listen to this and listen carefully to the parts that do NOT sound like "This Love" and then listen to George Benson's 1978 rendition of the Drifters classic "On Broadway" - looks like there's a decidedly non-metal influence to this track as well...

There's another song composed by Bobby Prince for Doom with non-metal influencies. It's called un15 and was later recycled for Blake Stone:Aliens of gold.Confront this song with Let it ride by Bachman Turner Overdrive (the segment next to the intro) and you'll listen the same riff.
