Hes not good though i can tell you that, he knows no actual real soldiering skills whatsoever or how to apply them playing the game. The creators of Marine Doom would even tell you this to, John Carmack and Adrian Carmack even supported and handed the Marine Doom creators all the game physics, dev, and engineering information on how Doom is a real life soldiering simulator to create Marine Doom for the Doom internet community, they never told very much of the employees that are the tiny quacks and lambly eggheads these confidental events like Romero. John Carmack was also formal seminar class G security personell for the U.S. Army and Aerospace and he did aquire confidental information on field combat skills, how soldiers think, and the techinality of soldiering on a combat field to create Doom.

I still have my two 1.44" floppies! They were handing these out at a Comdex convention or something similar at the Infomart in Dallas back in what ?? 1993-94 I took home a copy loaded it up and played for weeks. we then learned that you could use a serial cable between two systems and play multiplayer and then we got fancy and learned that you could network them together using COAX over 10base2 using the Novell driver to start the IPX. My and my room mate at the time spent months (probably a year) playing this game and I have played every one since. This one game probably changed my life more than most anything else in my life because after I got addicted to this, I still play almost every FPS to this day. What I find interesting about this is that people play it so many different ways. I have seen people very familiar with Doom also find all the stuff. But there mainly the types that makes maps. And so they get a tingling little feeling about what to explore. Like they know the limitation and such but will go exploring those limitations just for that. But many of the more experience regular players tend just to play it in a way in how they expect doom to work. In it quite interesting.
@lukkkasz323
@lukkkasz323 11 ай бұрын
It's a very interesting thing really, it goes deeper than that. For example I've created a few non-linear Half-Life 2 levels and linear Doom 2 levels. Half-Life 2 players didn't like the non-linearity, while Doom players didn't like the linearity. It shows exactly why it's so hard to create something unique. The response is often negative, even if the ideas are about normal in isolation. There is just an incompatibility. But it's also impossible to fix it the other way around, because Doom 2 players rarely will just play a Half-Life 2 level, and vice versa.

What I love most about this wad is that it couldn't have been made in anything other than Doom. One of the best things about it is the aged technology; there's this amazing atmosphere here that could only be captured with tech from that era. The nostalgia, the sound, the liminal spaces, the 90s! There's something about certain media from the 90s that's inherently creepy, more so than any other era for me. The VHS vibes, this; and there's a certain quality to some of the film from the early 90s that gives me a sickening, anxious familiarity that I can't quite put my finger on. And thanks to the internet, I know I'm not the only one.

@@baumhauser Spot-on assessment. The WAD toys with the concept of liminal spaces at times, and that section of the level was inspired by a famous "liminal space" photograph that was taken at Holiday Inn at Heathrow Airport. Also, the house changing frequently (including an easter egg if you open one of the closets several times) is a reference to the book House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. One of the text documents that accompanies the WAD also seems to indicate that as an influence by highlighting each instance of the word "house" in blue, just like in the book.

Still really cool to see our good ol' boy, the actual Icon of Sin himself, play this crazy ass doom mod nearly 30 years on. Fun fact, but Doom 1 and 2 were my first played PC games as a kid. My dad somehow got a virus/broke the computer and we had to call a PC guy. He didn't have DOOM, but he installed Duke3d and said "it's basically the same." I hated it at the time, but I love it now. gzDoom is basically just Duke3d on crack as far as the engine goes. Long story short, I saw sprite tiddies at a far too young age, but still preferred DOOM. Because I loved doom so much my dad asked the guy if he could install DOOM to which he replied "no, but I have something better" and installed Duke 3D, hence where the sprite tiddies comment came from. He played underhalls but didn’t go to the next level to see it repeat! So frustrating!

I just had a startling realization... The "cerberus" monster is supposed to be a mirror image of the regular dog, and we know that the house caught on fire: The "cerberus" monster looks severely burned, and in game they took the sprite from (Blood) it can even breathe fire... I think the game is telling us that the dog burned to death when the house caught fire.
