@Cythil11 ай бұрын
What I find interesting about this is that people play it so many different ways. I have seen people very familiar with Doom also find all the stuff. But there mainly the types that makes maps. And so they get a tingling little feeling about what to explore. Like they know the limitation and such but will go exploring those limitations just for that. But many of the more experience regular players tend just to play it in a way in how they expect doom to work. In it quite interesting.
@lukkkasz32311 ай бұрын
It's a very interesting thing really, it goes deeper than that. For example I've created a few non-linear Half-Life 2 levels and linear Doom 2 levels. Half-Life 2 players didn't like the non-linearity, while Doom players didn't like the linearity. It shows exactly why it's so hard to create something unique. The response is often negative, even if the ideas are about normal in isolation. There is just an incompatibility. But it's also impossible to fix it the other way around, because Doom 2 players rarely will just play a Half-Life 2 level, and vice versa.

@@baumhauser Spot-on assessment. The WAD toys with the concept of liminal spaces at times, and that section of the level was inspired by a famous "liminal space" photograph that was taken at Holiday Inn at Heathrow Airport. Also, the house changing frequently (including an easter egg if you open one of the closets several times) is a reference to the book House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. One of the text documents that accompanies the WAD also seems to indicate that as an influence by highlighting each instance of the word "house" in blue, just like in the book.

And then if you finish Underhalls and keep going, you go BACK INTO MYHOUSE.WAD. The ride never ends! The soul sphere not being visible while you're outside, during the Playstation days, until you're inside the house and you can see it out the window waiting for you. Then you go through the journey of trying to escape your house, and don't see it waiting for you outside anymore. The usual monsters turn into scary monsters, your house burns up. If only you could leave your house and get your soul back. Ominous. Whoever made this, well, they're a true artist.

I love how the part at 49:38 is overlooked by some, but others freak the fuck out about it. This video has been a treat so far, and I'm sad it looks like the whole map isn't explored. Still really cool to see our good ol' boy, the actual Icon of Sin himself, play this crazy ass doom mod nearly 30 years on. Fun fact, but Doom 1 and 2 were my first played PC games as a kid. My dad somehow got a virus/broke the computer and we had to call a PC guy. He didn't have DOOM, but he installed Duke3d and said "it's basically the same." I hated it at the time, but I love it now. gzDoom is basically just Duke3d on crack as far as the engine goes. Long story short, I saw sprite tiddies at a far too young age, but still preferred DOOM. Still do to this day.
@Dorumin11 ай бұрын
I love how back in the day PC guys were just random dudes and they often just installed pirated games alongside repairing your OS. Also, you still see sprite tiddies to this day, or prefer doom?
@moonbyul87311 ай бұрын
@@Dorumin Funny you say that because my Uncle set up our PC for us and installed DOOM with the OS. My dad did something to fuck up Windows and we had to call some PC repair guy because none of us were any sort of tech savvy and he basically had to just do a fresh install of windows 95. Because I loved doom so much my dad asked the guy if he could install DOOM to which he replied "no, but I have something better" and installed Duke 3D, hence where the sprite tiddies comment came from. (There was also Daggerfall.) 'Course, what with the wonderfully perverted world we live in today, there's always H-Doom if you want both Doom and 2d sprite tiddies. lol

@@Dorumin After a visit to the repair shop, I had an install of "MAME 10000 GAMES" appear on my desktop, it opened to an endless list of games and I had a blast through classics like 1942, Street Fighter and Dig Dug. A lot of them had "bootleg" in the titles meaning some weird changes. Sadly, the PC broke again and we took it to another repair man and the 10000 games didn't survive the format.

BFG from the horror bathroom, but only if you paid attention to the screenshot on the Google drive. Rocket launcher only near the end - for the slaughter. I just had a startling realization... The "cerberus" monster is supposed to be a mirror image of the regular dog, and we know that the house caught on fire: The "cerberus" monster looks severely burned, and in game they took the sprite from (Blood) it can even breathe fire... I think the game is telling us that the dog burned to death when the house caught fire.
