LTD guitars are a killer option in the Epiphone/Gibson style that seem to be a bit better constructed with more features than the comparably priced Epis. One of my main guitars is actually a Squier Affinity Tele with single coils. I put a Duncan Little ‘59 mini humbucker in the bridge and it’s doomy as hell. A really mid-forward pickup that, with the stock pot values, is on the dark side. It started as just a project guitar but I love it and play it as much (if not more than) my more expensive guitars.
@varyagace11 ай бұрын
Seconding the recommendation for LTD. I am absolutely enamored with their Telecaster style model, and I reckon if I ever got a LP or SG style guitar, I'd get it from them. They're lighter, more ergonomic, have thinner necks that I like, 25,5 inch scale lenght which is nicer for low tunings, and many of them come with coil splits on the humbuckers. Ibanez and LTD are my favorites.

I got the vintage burst one for Xmas, swapped pickups for some super distortion copies with series/parallel push pull pots, added a cream 62' SG pickguard and humbucker rings , and upgraded the electronics. It beats any set neck epiphone or any other SG copy by far. Just get the black one, add a chrome pickguard and voila! Tony Iommi's SG on a budget. 🤟

I’m a big fan of the Epi SGs. I would personally recommend the Traditional Pro over the Standard. Lower price (typically the same as the worn Classic, which can both be found frequently on sale under $400). Humbuckers with coil tap, the lower price makes doing hardware upgrades easy, and have cooler finish options (I got the Gold and it really stands out). I also have the Green Worn Classic with the P90s. It is my current favorite guitar. Something I didn’t account for when ordering is how smooth the neck would feel and how much lighter it would be with that raw finish. It’s absolutely delightful to play in a long set. I swapped out the pickups for some Widdershins Pagan 90s and it is an absolute killer.

Great choices, now I'd like to add some more if yo don't mind. I'm mainly an SG guy, we don't play doom, but rather some kind of psychedelic/stoner music and are not tuned too low at drop C. For me SG's and LP's worked just perfect, but about a half a year ago I got myself an Epiphone Firebird, the new one with the original neck-through construction. Now that is a hell of a guitar, I tell ya'! I thought the pickups would need to be replaced with something better, but boy was I wrong there... They are rather low output (just as the original vintage FB pickups were) but with the right amount of gain they just scream. The build quality is really good, I haven't seen the new higher end Epi's yet, but if this middle tier guitar is this good, I can imagine how those are built. Anyhow, not necessarily a typical doom metal guitar, but if you are looking for something a bit different, I can whole-heartedly recommend it, for me at least it is definitely a keeper. If you are looking for good quality LP style guitars, maybe the Swedish brand Hagström is worth to take a look too, though their current line-up is made in China as far as I know (as are most of the Epi's too btw.) If you are in the used market too, it might be worth to look up older ones from the seventies, those were made in Sweden, and are at really another level of craftsmanship, however they are not necessarily cheap, maybe only cheaper alternatives to similarly aged Gibsons or Fenders. And I would also mention the old Japanese Gibson copies from the seventies and eighties, I had recently quite a few Les Paul Custom copies from Orville, Tokai and Greco, they were all fantastic instruments. Again not necessarily cheap, but really affordable alternatives to the same original modell from Gibson, especially considering the age factor too.

Chat Pile uses a Peavey T-60, they helped "ruin" the market. I've been very happy with my Squier Toronado for doom--it's a Fender version of an SG with hot (10k neck, 14k bridge) pickups. One of my favorite guitars for fuzz, and it may seem like an odd choice, the Danelectro 59. Keep the toggle in the middle position. With the stacked vol/tone for both single coils, I turn down the tone on the neck pickup (almost all the way), then dial in the volume, so it is just audible with the bridge. This gets me a lot of low end, but the bridge gives the clarity. On top of these being semi-hollow, it has sustain for days.

Have had a great time with a Jackson JS32T Rhoads, only problem is the pickups SUCK (at least in mine) they squeal really bad, probably the only thing I’m going to need to swap out on it. Got it for a good deal from GC brand new for like $220.

Also, those CV Jazzmasters are fucking phenomenal and highly recommend them.

Really?!? I was just looking at one of those to fill the pointy guitar want haha

@@FuzzlordEffects Yup, it’s unfortunate how bad they squeal with lots of fuzz and distortion but the fretwork and neck feel amazing.

MIM Fender Jaguars or Jazzmasters are always good. I have heard great things about Harley Benton and would probably buy one over an epiphone.

what do you think of baritones for tuning REALLY low for bands like primitive man that are tuning all the way down at a G# or even lower? i want to say their guitarist ethan switched to a baritone recently from using gibsons

The cheaper gretsch solid bodies are cool, some are dual humbucker and some have a bridge humbucker and neck p90. The pastel 50s colors arent super doomy but i believe they make them in a natural brown stain finish and maybe black too as well.

Good picks, I was thinking recently that the gretsch g5220 (especially in the Bristol fog colour) would be a good budget doom guitar, I've seen quite a few videos of them being used for metal and the pickups sound great.

I’ve been looking for guitars and I saw that the Ibanez AR series is pretty affordable and seems like it would fit in really good for Doom metal but I’ve never really heard anyone talk about them. Has anyone tried them out?

Hello! i'm currently learning how to get into the whole doom metal guitar playing and i was curious on your thoughts on playing something like a stratocaster (HSS or SSS configuration) for this style of music.

I suggest used DBZ guitars, they were the brand Dean Zelinsky started between Dean and his current Zelinsky guitars. They were very popular when they came out but there was internal politics that caused the brand to implode. I have a Korean made Royale model and its the PERFECT doom guitar (fender scale, dark hot-rodded humbuckers, unique and classy design that's not a blatant rip off)

This goes out to any Esp LTD EC256 folks, how does it doom? Cant beat the price, 2 HB and they're beautiful. Any opinions would be helpful, cant seem to find many doom specific reviews. Ty!

Those Amazon specials coming out with stainless steel frets wud be a good'un for a noob. I got an EART semi acoustic- it's not a classic style for Doom- but once I get sum albico 8 pups in her- i'm sure it'll rock. One my fave Doom'rs is a really old Epiphone LP stylee- Says made in Korea but my luthier told me the bits were Japanese I put some Dimarzio Super Distortions in her. Middle pup is set to blend & is an old Gotoh. I got better guitars of course- but hotrodded junkers are so fun to play.

This might sound weird but dont discount Danelectro guitars. I saw the Melvins play Bullhead last week and Buzz played his Danelectro the whole set, sounded sludgy af. I got a Dano Hodad with humbuckers thats insanely versatile for $200, so try stuff that isnt traditional and you might be surprised

I just got one of those squier contemporary Jazzmasters and it rips ...I am about to put a set of passive pickups in it though,it comes with actives

What kind are you putting in your Squier JM? I wanna do the same but am not sure what will fit
@darklight481511 ай бұрын
hey Ted, any standard size humbucker will fit, just don't get any that are "F-spaced" those are for floyd rose guitars so they'd be a bit wider..as far as brand goes,i generally go with seymour duncan or guitar fetish for a more budget option,but his time i wanted to try some Alnico 2 style pickups because i've never tried any and thought they might be a good fit for a Jazzmaster of this style...so when looking for Alnico 2 sets i ran across a set of Gotoh "HB Classic Alpha" humbuckers and was intrigued so i said,why not,they were just under a hundred bucks for the set...they're Japanese made and i've always thought they made great hardware like tuners,etc so I thought i'd give them a try...i have not had a chance to install yet,they're sitting here on my desk now...hopefully this weekend i'll get a chance...i hope this helps...cheers!@@TedLevinSpaceCadet

@@darklight4815 Hey thanks for the feedback! I just ordered a Seymour SH-4 for the bridge. Heard one in a jag and sounded pretty meaty. Let me know what you think of the Gotoh. I have two Squire JM 40 yr anniversary models, one in drop C and the other in drop B, maybe I’ll throw one in the other one. Nice to have tonal variety. Recently got a Woodrite Warlord I keep in drop Bb and it just kills🤘 Just have always loved the look of the offsets.

@@TedLevinSpaceCadet right on! That's awesome...yeah I seem to always throw a JB in the bridge as my go-to so I wanted to try something a little different on this one...I'll let you know how it works out,and yes offsets absolutely rule..I eventually wanna get a more traditional style Jazzmaster 🤘💀🤘

finished installing the alnico 2 Gotoh's a little while ago and i must say,i'm quite pleased...i think it has far more character now....those actives that came in it are actually really good pickups and i understand the "modern" metal crowd they were trying to sell to with that setup but that's not exactly what i wanted out of this guitar, i have other guitars that do that sound...so now i do believe i've got what i wanted...well worth a purchase in my opinion for the Gotoh's...i approve.@@TedLevinSpaceCadet
