If I had to describe the sounds each of these cards uses for notes, it would go like this: SB AWE32: Snap Gravis Ultrasound: Buzz SB Pro: Honk Roland GC-55: Actual instruments

I grew up with a Soundblaster card and still love its "raw" sound, but the Roland is definitely in a league of its own.
@DBob018 жыл бұрын
+Chubzdoomer I grew up with the common Creative Cards as well and I have to say, there are some examples, where they were performed better then the Roland cards. Just some examples: - Dune: Stéphane Picq and Philippe Ulrich did an amazing job with the OPL2. They weren't just putting raw notes inside the cards, but they utilized most of the Yamaha IC at it's best. In the meantime, the Roland port was just awfully created. - Lotus III: As an ~100% Amiga port, they tried to somehow recreate the 4ch PCM music from Amiga on the Roland MT-32, which requires a completely different approach. They failed. But any wave-table sound card had no problem with the concept. - Warcraft: Maybe the only game, which has actually used the OPL3 capabilities very well, meanwhile they messed up the Roland music. Almost any game which I've played, stuck somehow at OPL2 level, mostly for compatibility. That way, the sound engineer / composer did not had to create two version of the same song for two very similar Yamaha ICs. Interesting fact, that the Warcraft II music which can be found on the CD (and of course was preferred to the OPL music) was recorded from an Roland SC-88.

Thanks a lot! Sound Blaster Pro has it's own charm. I didn't know that SC-55 rules in Doom 2.

The SoundBlaster Pro sounds like if the 32X version of Doom had good music.

The ones I remember from my youth would be the SB Pro (I had an SB16, but the FM guitar still sounds the same) and the GUS (I used its MIDI patches with Cubic Player on the previously-mentioned SB16).

Seems like the tune was programmed for Doom using a Roland Midi Keyboard and all the others other than Ultrasound just did emulation of the Roland version whilst the Ultrasound had to have a fresh version made as it couldn't emulate the original.

Oh and also, the SYNTHGMS.sf2 file that you get with SynthFont, sound very similar to the AWE32, so it might even be the same soundfont

Because that's the Sound Blaster you used to have ;] It not an emulated card, but pure opl2 midi from a CT1600.

I've played Doom and doom 2 on my 2001 no name laptop, with a ATI mobility 128 and a Maestro 2e, it's great for the midi version, but not for the sound blaster emulation, otherwise it plays both flawlessly.
