After looking at the lyrics more in depth and other theories on this song and video what I have come up with is that the song mainly deals with adversity is ones personal life, how they handle said adversity and/or how it reflects onto others, and using the video game motif to tie it in together hence the final boss tittle and references to games. Many of the lyrics reference death and how they rise again and do what they do like they never have before aka alluding to having extra lives in a game but in this case of real life relating to adversity. This is why after each person is killed in the video it is all set up once again to be tried over and over until they overcome and beat the "Final Boss" With this Doomtree can also tie in struggles faced politically, personal, and so on to include the other topics presented in the video/lyrics.

I've always liked the line "You'll know what I made from the marks on my hands" because I used to write song lyrics and stories in HS & college, in the margins of my notes, and sometimes instead of taking notes. The more furiously and intensely I was writing, the more my writing hand would sweat, and I'd get blue and black ink all over the sides of my hand from resting it on the paper, sometimes even to the point where you could clearly see parts of words on my hands. I feel this lyric so hard because writing songs and stories has always been my thing, and I always think of this, and how hard I work at it. Not to mention the times when I was able to write my creative stuff *and* keep up w/ the notes in the class, I've always been proud of that.

First of all, love that Cecil does the reset and what does he say, Just like magic, you're all in one piece again. Dessa, I've been reading through your books, Spiral Bound, My own devices...if anyone could talk directly to my would it would be you. You magical with a pen, although I prefer pencil now as it doesn't bleed in the rain. I hope to meet you very soon, or perhaps we've already met and I just wasn't ready. I love you. I love you all Soo much and you have helped me get through some of the darkest times in my life. Thank you for helping keep that candle lit. *Holy crap* guys. If I may? Sims opens at street level, stating the plight he mostly concentrates on. Innocuously sets the stage right up until the last line, where he announces his own fall, and shows the first card in the hand. He's at the bottom, the deuce, but his death broke suit. Dessa's talking people. She's double coding marvelously but it comes back to the people behind it. She's repping the low class that is trying hard not to be Sims at the table. Before I go on, I am *far* from saying anything against Dessa's class. If anything her willingness to play this role confirms the intellectual honesty thereof. Stef is kinda nouveaux riche in his role, and talking events. He's got a grasp. He's upwardly mobile. His character definitely sees it coming on a level yet unrevealed, but what can he do? This is the game played. Mike... man... I've rarely connected with you before. The guy at apparent top in this one, you're talking ideas, and man are you providing a backwards compatible key to my kind of thinker. Imma go back through your catalog. Your last line there is friggin' gold pressed latinum. To all those wondering why Cecil doesn't get a verse... well, the guy actually pulling strings isn't going to tell his story until those strings are cut. The implication is they haven't been yet. Cecil plays the collected conception of what I'll call the machiavellian patriarch. and his silence is eloquent if you listen closely. He's harvesting bloodlines and tilling the field anew. Kiss the chef indeed. Dude shoots the moon like it's a matter of course... because it is. Bravo, guys. Bravissimo.

I think you are wrong on this one. I might be too, but this is my interpretation: The Final Boss is us, the audience. Each verse is a different way the audience handles the artist: Sims - the one who does not understand, and take music on face value, Dessa - ones that try to give it a collective meaning through social interaction, P.O.S. - ones that look for the thrill behind it and are intrigued by that, Mike - the hunger that can never be really filled and makes it a dog eat dog situation. It is also the first track on the album, practically making it an ode to us, the audience. We are the ones that are the judges, we are the unbeatable final boss of the music game. The music video represents this too - they surrender to the killer (Cecil, who is us - the final boss) and laugh at each others demise, because that is just how it goes. We set the table for them, we give them food (the actual food in the music video), and we feed on them, so the artist are our food. At the end the table is set anew to start this procedure all over again. Anyway, a great track.
@SecretCh0rd9 жыл бұрын
Shoot2boot I don't quite grok your position but thinking about what you said and DC's Monarch plotline gave me another angle. "When I became a man I put away childish things". The lead up to the final boss always involves facing foes once vanquished, so the four who're talking could be the young selves of an Old King. Remembering how he felt as he rose through the ranks, and now in final wisdom, no words left. He knows it's all relative in the end.
