This will help you to find your doorbell transformer location. Doorbell transformer can be difficult to find its location. Hopefully, after watching this video it will help you find your doorbell transformer's location. If you need help in finding the location of the doorbell transformer leave a comment below. We will do our very best to help you find the location of your doorbell transformer. If all of your rooms are finished with sheetrock the doorbell transformer Location should be visible on a junction box cover. So the transformer for the doorbell shouldn't be in a junction box but it is possible that it was placed in that location. If your HVAC and or your water heater are in the attic chances our your doorbell transformer's location is as well.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I was so discouraged when I moved the chime box and it wasn’t in the wall behind the chime. I just knew it was in the wall but probably further down and out of reach. I grabbed my drywall saw dreading cutting another hole in another wall and something said check KZbin - and low and behold I found your video. Not only was mine not in the wall, it was in the basement attached to the light above my furnace! I almost cried from joy when I saw it!! I appreciate you sharing this my friend.

Exactly what happened to me. I searched for 2 days and was ready to give up. I finally realized look which direction the doorbell chime wires go and follow them. Mine was in the basement attached to an overhead light that has one of those pull strings to turn it on.

Whoooohoooo! I found mine finally! Omg! I'm so happy! God bless you for this video. CA here, home built in the 80s and it was in the closet near the main entrance where the door bell is. I was so sad that I couldn't find it at first. Tried behind the chime box located in the hallway, which there was only a wire coming out of drywall connecting to the chime box. So I made a giant hole looking for it, not there! Went outside the breaker box, nothing... I was dreading the thought of scavenging in the scary attic that I've never set foot in. Then someone here mentioned the closet.... yes! It was there! I always wondered what that mysterious electrical small box thing was and had forgotten all about it. Phewww... you all saved me so much trouble.

Thank goodness for this video and its comments! I bought a RING Pro 2 doorbell and a new transformer and received them a couple of days ago. Since my house was built in 1989, I felt sure that I would have to replace the transformer. I had looked at a few different videos on KZbin and ALL of them had the transformer behind the chime housing, so I assumed (we know what that means) that ALL the transformers would be there. When I pulled the housing from the wall….surprise, all I see is a small slit in the drywall for the wires to go through!🤬 I made a few passes around the house and garage looking everywhere with no luck. I decided to look on KZbin for transformer locations, and thankfully ended up here. I looked in a few of the suggested locations, hoping and praying that I wouldn’t have to go under the house in the crawl space where the water heater and furnace are, because my bad knees won’t allow it! Finally, I decided to try the attic where a few folks here had found theirs. I gingerly go up the pull-down stairs and turn the overhead light on, shine a flashlight at the light fixture thinking it may be there. No luck! I look at the light switch box, next to the opening and surrounded by spray insulation, and don’t immediately see it either. I then pull back the surrounding insulation and, VOILA, it is there. I hear Angels singing “Hallelujah”! Now, the only problem is the very short wires going into the back of the current transformer. I am well on my way to being able to see visitors at my door!

Easy fix, just put mains voltage through the low voltage wires and see what catches fire. (Spoiler alert, it’s everything… everything catches fire.) and if that doesn’t work at least you’re free to rebuild with the insurance money.

I failed to mention in this video that sometimes they are behind the chime itself. If you take the cover off the chime and happen to see a blue box behind the chime. Chances are good that the transformer is in the blue box. There are typically only two screws holding the chime in place. Also, try looking up in an attic often they are right next to the opening.

I traced the wires from my existing chime to the doorbell itself; no transformer. They do pass through an electrical box with a few wire nuts inside but again no transformer. Could the previous owner have installed a doorbell/chime without a transformer? That seems doubtful since I got a message while installing the new doorbell that I needed to upgrade my transformer. Update: following the other wire from the door chime led me to the old transformer; buried in spray in insulation.

Great video. I was trying to find the transformer for the past 2 days (it didn't occur to me that I need to check the junction box in the garage). I cut open the drywall behind the chime and could find only the wires. Didnt know where the wires were coming from. Your video was very helpful! Thank you very much! I finally found it and it was attached to the junction box above the water heater thickly masked behind paint (the painter who painted the home previously did a shoddy job!) I have an Edwards transformer 592 and I see only a red and a greenish wire probably by old home owner. Red is connected to middle and the green to the right corner and I am assuming it might be 16V 10VA right now. Ring doorbell recommends 16V to 24 V but doesn’t mention VA. To be safe can I hook the middle red wire to left most corner to get 24V 20VA? Please note the marking on 8V/16V/10VA is faded but I can clearly see it’s a 592 and also 24V and 20VA with arrows at the bottom. Also, the transformer is connected to the circuit breaker box. Please confirm?

What a pain in the ass trying to find the transformer. Still haven’t found mine BUT I suspect it’s in the basement. I looked at the choke box and it appears the wires that go to the transformer are going down. So I’m looking below but still can’t find the damn thing.

I live in Mexico there was no transformer behind the chime. If I buy a transformer do I install it directly to the wires that we’re connected to the chime? Will I then connect the ring pro pack to the transformer? Thank you

I'm looking at all these locations and it looks like insulation or the paper backing on drywall is able to butt up right next to the transformer which seems to me like a fire hazard. The transformer I bought shows to install it on the outside of a junction box. Why would I do this when I want to put it in an insulated wall. The heat it produces and the exposed stubs for the low voltage both seem like a fire hazard.

Can the new transformer be mounted on a joist and run the connection wires into a nearby junction box with proper junction box grommet? This would be screwing the transformer into the wooden joist since attaching the transformer into the junction box will not fit.

I purchased mine from Home Depot. Hampton Bay 16VAC/30VA Transformer Compatible with All Video Door Bells. It worked immediately. Which doorbell cam do you have??

I found mine last year up on the attic attached to a light; it went out last week so I went to swap it out and it was giving me only 4 volts at the doorbell and when I want to check the voltage at the transformer, it was very, very hot. Is this normal? I had no issues after I installed it last February (2019) and all of a sudden it failed and the new one (same brand and model) has the correct voltage at the transformer but only 4 at the doorbell itself when I hook it up for 16 or 24. Any ideas?

That's definitely not normal, it may get warm. I would guess that there is a wire touching either at the transformer, chime or at the doorbell. How old is your home?

sellgooddeals DIY it was built in ‘86. We had an electrician out today and he checked everything out. The transformer is bad but idk if it was bad out if the box or we killed it. He disconnected all the doorbells (three total) from the chime, figured out which one went to the front door and I just had him remove the chime. He says it’s probably one of the other two which we never use. He was out for another repair through our warranty company (they don’t cover doorbells) so we’re going to have home come back out and rewrite everything and have it brought up to code because they literally have the transformer connected to a light and hanging from a nail by the ground wire 🤔. There are almost half a dozen old and burned out transformers from years past so there’s obviously some other issue there. Thanks so much for your help!

There are two types: 1. There's a threaded retaining nut on the inside of the junction box. that attaches to the transformer Once you on screw the nut and unhook the power wires form the transformer you can remove it. 2. There is a screw that is holding the transformer to the junction box. Unhook the power wires to the transformer. Un-tighten the screw that is holding the transformer to the junction box. you should be able to remove the transformer. Either way be careful unhooking the wires from the transformer as they are 120V.

So I found my supposed transformer in the boiler room. It is rated at 120v input and 24v/40va output. Would it be ok to replace it with a 120v input but lower output at 16 vac/10 va? I am not using any fancy doorbell, but it is powering 2 chimes (1 for first floor, and 1 for basement).

That seems like a large capacity/voltage transformer for a doorbell. I would assume this powers the controls on the boiler. I would follow the wire on the low voltage side to see where it goes. I thinking you are going to have to keep looking.

That is a bummer! Have you looked in the attic next to the opening? Sometimes they are behind the doorbell chime. What state do you live in and how old is your home? If you have Google home mini/hub you could always bypass the chime. Then you could use both of them until you find the transformer.

Yes; but if you have radiators or baseboard heaters, most likely they'll use the same wire for the thermostat which splits for the doorbell as it uses the same 8v or 16v transformer. This is due to saving the cost for running a separate wire for doorbell and thermostat

Doorbell transformers are usually located outside the home along the siding or on a wall in the garage. They may also be fixed to a wall in the basement or closet near the front door or entryway. If you don't see it in any of these places, check the walls in the attic. It may be tucked behind the insulation.

The plug-in style has the voltage label either on the front side of the transformer (facing the outlet) or the backside (facing away from the outlet). It will be labeled as the output voltage. Are you having problems or are you upgrading to a Video Doorbell?
