I had an issue when I first installed my Eufy doorbell as it wouldn't even power up. Super helpful!!! I’ve had the nest doorbell and when purchasing it at Home Depot I was informed my transformer was probably old and I’d need to update it. Long story short I went the battery route and one day when charging the battery someone stole a large, pink rock my grandmother had given me out front during broad day light but I didn’t have the damn footage so I want it hardwired. This was super helpful, I haven’t done it yet but simple, clear and useful instructions so thank you

Yes, lots of different locations depending on regional trends and also ever building and contractor will do it a little differently, so sometimes you just have to look around if not finding it at first.

Good video. The only thing I’d say is though some of the older houses have the transformers in the box, code is to have the transformer mounted on the outside of the junction box as they get hot and present a fire hazard. Just be careful and safe guys.

On the west coast. Most transformers are located inside a closet of a bedroom or coat closet and is usually located closest to the chime or doorbell that goes ding dong.. On really older homes. They installed it inside the attic which is a terrible place to find and service it.

However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

I think I need to do this. I had my Ring Doorbell Pro 2 professionally installed a year ago. About nine months later it stopped working. I called support twice which was a waste of time. My house is new and the current transformer is 16 volt. My Ring app indicated it was not getting power, so I came to the conclusion that I need the 24 volt transformer. This video should resolve my Ring doorbell issue. I hope!

I'm not sure I follow. If you have existing wires from a doorbell then you'd have a transformer connected somewhere along the line. You need the proper voltage to juice the Ring doorbell.

I love your video. Thanks My original transformer, the green wire wasn't attached to anything. It was stripped, but just hanging loss and lonely by itself. When I replaced it with a new transformer, I put a cap on the green by itself and capped white with white and black with black. Is that correct?

Transformer in our house is made in US by GE, rated at 24V-40VA driving Westminster mechanical chime. I hope when I install the Ring doorbell there will be no issues.

Also should have mentioned there's a difference between a 16v 10va and a 16v 30va transformer. Many times need the 30va if you want both the video doorbell and the mechanical chime to work at the same time.

This is easy enough, my current transformer is rated at 10V. But the problem is the chime itself - it is also rated at 10V. If I upgrade the transformer to 24V, will it fry my door chimes?

I have A 16 volt transformer it runs 1 doorbell cam no problem .But I added A second doorbell cam to back door bell, It doesn t work.I can only run 1 doorbell cam. the voltage drops to 14 volts when both hooked up...Would A 24 volt transformer handle both??

My house was built around same time as yours, had the same looking chime, covered pulls right off like yours, saw the two screws to unscrew it, thought I'm in business, pulled it off and it's just a cable coming out of hole in the wall. UGGH. now for the search to find it! If it's inside a wall somewhere I don't even know how to begin to figure that out other than ripping walls down to try and find it.

Sorry to hear about the trouble locating the transformer. Reviewing the comments on this video, seems others have found the transformer in a myriad of places. I'm sure you've checked in the utility room near or in the breaker box? Some have found it in the attic above the wall where the chime is installed, but sounds like your low voltage wires are running downward. Definitely sounds like a tricky one. I've had similar trouble tracking down other wires in the past and purchased a cheap $30 snake scope / inspection camera to help track things down so I didn't have to open up walls or ceilings to explore further. Sigh, mine is installed into the side of the main breaker panel using that ring washer on its side.. It's flush against the plywood behind it, so I guess I have to unscrew the whole panel face off so I can get to it. I turned the power back on as it's getting dark today. I was really hoping mine was behind the chime as well. It's odd as with the current one, my Eufy doorbell doesn't even turn on at all, not even a low power light. I wonder if it's just not enough power or if I have a bad connection at the doorbell. Installation was finicky as the wires are short and tougher copper. They give you extension wires but no space to tuck them in. Lol

That does not sound fun at all, but at least it sounds like you located and know what needs to be done to replace the transformer. You could try a volt meter to see if you're getting any voltage at all to the doorbell. It might just be too low to power it up at all. I would think the wiring is still good unless they ran the wires too far, as power will continue to dissipate the longer the stretch. Best of luck and thanks for posting your comments!

My vid doorbell stopped working, borrowed my neighbor's multimeter, and only getting 1 volt out of the transformer so the thing is shot. My concern is that I don't know which breaker will cut the power to the transformer, and if it's only showing a volt or less, how am I even going to know if I found the right breaker?

If you can't locate it, best to shut off the main to the house to be safe!

It could be too much depending on the old doorbell and what voltage it requires. Safest bet would be to keep the old transformer and out that back in if that's your plan.

Get a digital volt meter in VAC. Test to see if the meter reads over 16 to 24VAC. No it doesn't matter which lead goes to which.

Where do the cables from the doorbell go? It looks like you just connected the lines from the transformer to the chime, am I correct? In other words, shouldnt the chime have 4 cables coming in, two from the bell/camera and two from the transformer?

My current chime in my house is being operated with a 5 volt transformer. I need to change it out for a 16 volt transformer to operate a Ring Pro that I want to install. I'm concerned that a 16 volt transformer will burn out the 5 volt chime that I currently have in my house. So my question is, if my current chime is operating on a 5 volt transformer, won't a 16volt or 24 volt transformer burn out that 5 volt chime ? Or do i need to upgrade the chime also ?

Chime can remain, it just completes the low voltage circuit. The transformer needs to be upgraded to the 16v. If not it will definitely burn out the 5v transformer & your ring receiver.

I cannot find an old transformer at the chime box. How hard is to put a new transformer there? I will have to connect to 110 power source behind he electrical plastic junction box and do more run new wiring so ring doorbell will have power and work. We are currently using Ring Doorbell 3 on battery, and Ring chime connected to power outlet. Like to have wired doorbell for continuous power.

Sorry for the delayed response. It depends on what else is connected and if that will be enough total voltage to supply to everything. Some homes have multiple chimes or doorbells for different entrances. One transformer would be enough if running a video doorbell and an older analog doorbell for example, but running two or three video doorbells may require a more powerful or separate transformers in order to supply enough voltage to everything. First and foremost, always consult with a professional electrician if any doubts, but we can share a few thoughts: Most new transformers will have a ground wire, but some older ones that will be replaced may not. If you have a standard 3 wire electrical cable coming into the junction box then there should be an unshielded copper wire to connect the ground wire to from the new transformer. You can also ground to the side of a metal junction box or conduit if that's what you have. If you have a plastic j-box and no ground wire to connect to then your options are to leave the new ground wire disconnected as the old one was or to run a new ground wire to the ground screw on a nearby outlet or light switch. Hi there, I have two doorbell chimes attached to regular doorbell buttons (not camera or anything like that), they are attached to one transformer which is attached to the breaker box. The old transformer was 16v 10va, would I be okay to replace it with a 16v 30va?

Great video. My problem is, my current doorbell chime doesn't have a transformer like yours does. Would you know if there's a way to hardwire a Ring Chime? I'm not a fan of having it plugged into an outlet.

I have a 16v transformer. When I hook up my Ring Pro and press the ring button, it throws the chime plunger, but the plunger stays activated, and doesn't go back to resting position. So the chime motor stays on and buzzing. It's an older Sears Roebuck chime.

Hmm, sorry haven't run into that problem before. If it's an older chime then might be worth replacing to fix the issue.

What do you do if you dont have a transformer already behind your chime box? Using my multimeter im only getting to 15.7 volts. The ring doorbell will run but not well enough to connect to its ring network to finish setup. After doing research ring said its not getting enough power which judging from the 15.7 volt read I guess is correct.

There's a transformer somewhere in the home that is reducing the power from 110v down to 15.7v. The location can sometimes be a bit of a mystery as every region/builder/contractor installs them slightly differently as far as the location goes. Try looking near the breaker box in your utility room or in the attic area above the wall where your chime is located. I've also heard of transformers being installing in the floor and lower walls when not directly behind the chime itself, so it can be tricky trying to track it down at times. My Eufy wired 2K camera works fine except for 2 way audio. I measured a transformer in the garage and it's 17.9V but I also have a chime which I haven't the measurement of that transformer yet. I've been having issues of 2 way audio. The doorbell broadcasts audio out fine but I can't hear from the other end (delivery person). Did you encounter similar problems?

Haven't run into that issue here. How is the WiFi signal strength from the doorbell? I believe you can see the status in the app. I'd also try contacting Eufy support to see what they suggest on that one.
