My order doesn’t have to equate to $10, but no way will I travel 9 miles for a $7 order, or 18 miles for an $8 order that DD offered me. The mileage and payout have to be profitable.

Exactly! To do otherwise is just to shoot yourself in the foot. IRS only allows a $0.56 per mile deduction, and then you have to factor in gas, oil, wear and tear, and insurance for your car. For me, it has to be at LEAST $1 per mile.

I like this video. Definitely some good reasoning points behind this. We definitely don’t want to be totally stupid about what we take, but we can move strategically to get a better outcome. When we get an offer, we should analyze the whole picture. A higher paying order, some may say $8/under 4 miles, could take you 40 minutes to complete, especially with a slow restaurant and/or complicated delivery. It looked good on surface but ended up being a low-paying order. We HAVE to look at the entire picture as best we can when we get an offer. Sometimes we strike gold; sometimes we see fool’s gold. Be analytical and strategic.

You’re right. In my area Walmart orders are always close like 3miles or less most of the time but they only pay 8-10$. The time it takes to get there, the waiting time to get the order and the time to deliver it, it’s easily half an hour to an entire hour for only 8$. I’ve done many of these on slow mornings but after getting 20x 24packs of pop in the same order that needed to be delivered on the 4th floor of a complex I gave up. Most customer don’t tip you. No way I’m doing a delivery like that one only to get a « i hope they’re paying you good money » from the customer. Here in canada when you get a walmart order it doesn’t tell you how many things there’s in the order. There’s a number but you can’t count on it, same for groceries it says an amount of money but not the right one.

What was that all about? I'm still trying to figure out why the system allows 14.7 mile Dashes for 3.00 no tip; like it is ok to tank the driver's average. Or plan a kid's entire birthday inside a Walgreens in under five minutes. That on top of a one zone city where the average run can be out of the zone, and the software will make one backtrack after taking the roads to get back in. Commuter miles can be claimed as a tax deduction as well as your delivery miles.

There are guidelines for using commuter miles. In most cases one can NOT count commuter, unless there are certain situations such as a home office used for that business. Be careful with your calculations and ask your financial professionals specifics. It is very easy to start a gig job, but many times there are a lot of things we just don't know. I use Stride but OFTEN forget to turn on or off. I got the Door Dash tally of my miles & haven't amended Stride yet for my taxes. BUT, my days regularly end up working out to $1 per mile, as good balance out bad. So just as an example, if you made $5k, you probably drove 5k miles. If you consistently make $2 per mile, good for you, & halve that. Writing off a home office is a good tip tho. I might try that. See what my tax guy says.

This is where everyone's market is different. I'm able to decline quite a few orders that are high mileage low paying offers, yet fulfill an order that's a low tip and low mileage, yet still clear 25 an hour. What I'm able to do, others may not in their area. There are times where I'm able to make 40 plus an hour solely on knowing how my market works, and this isn't just sitting in a spot declining 10 plus orders in a row. Its knowing how the restaurants work, who the customers are that frequently order, and what restaurants have high volume. Given that info, I'm able to work my market to at least do 3 to 4 deliveries per hour. Also, to note, restaurants have now started their own delivery services. This will impact many drivers. In my market the chick fil a that's near me is a highly efficient, high volume restaurant that moves their drive thru faster than any gridlocked freeway, fulfills carryout orders faster than amazon, and has many delivery orders. They are starting their own delivery service that will cut through 3rd party apps profits. Know your market, and adapt. Because things like this will change it

As an order sits and is declined multiple times, the base pay goes up. The movement is aimed at turning orders that don't make business sense into profitable ones. My declines help other dashers. The longer the order sits the more base pay is added for the next driver. It's a lowest bidder wins system. The customers that aren't tipping need to realize that doing so will ensure timely service. Non-tip orders will get delivered after enough declines forcing DD to add base pay and make it worth our time. Many orders aren't started until a driver accepts. This is a luxury. Miles to dollar ratio matters just as well as total. All orders take time. The $3 orders don't take any less time than the $10. Averaging three orders per hour, dashers need to cover costs and make a living by setting a personal minimum. Dash like it's a business, not a hobby. Throw it back in the pool baby!
