What’s fucked up is I watched this on 1.75x speed to get through it “quicker” because my brain wants me to go back to Instagram and keep scrolling. It’s wild how real this feeling is, and how deeply ingrained it is in my behavior now.

It depends. Your intention was definitely wrong however watching videos at 1.75x speed or more can also be positive and productive. You can train your brain to process information faster from the videos you watch and get the information you need much quicker.

Once you eliminate addictive habits, you will notice that your food and drink will taste better. Your mood towards people will get better. You will feel more satisfied to your work and accomplishment. Probably because we have some sort of dopamine allocations. Allow your dopamine to produce in natural and useful things.

Yes. I've had periods in life when I wasn't gaming, when I wasn't scrolling through meme websites, no online news scrolling, no KZbin scrolling. Everything else is better. Relationships with family are better, patience is higher, mood in general more calm/ relaxed, not as tired or bored. It's all connected. Then tmyou start eating better, more exercise, which helps you feel even more better... I til you get sucked back into those very serious bad habbits of internet scrolling.

@martinskovpoulsen2736
@martinskovpoulsen2736 Жыл бұрын
@@Nick_Tag I believe you are right that it’s even more difficult for young people to find the right balance due to their brains not being fully developed. So I’m probably just an outlier. My problem with concentration is also fairly new. 2020 was a horrible year for me and so much so that it still affects me. The lockdowns totally upended my life and the routines I’d built up through the years. A divorce and the fact that I lost my job and had to find a new one below my skill level didn’t help. The lockdowns had a tremendous negative impact on my life and pushed me out of center. In 2020 and the following years I fell into the digital rabbit hole spending hours on end on Twitter and doomscrolling the news. I also started drinking more coffee and I’m cutting down on that too, but caffeine was never the big problem for me. The anxiety, the digital boredom and the hopelessness and inactivity forced upon me by the lockdowns is the main culprit. It’s not until this year that I’m really starting to reclaim my life and it fells like I’m starting from scratch.

I’m a 23 year old GenZ, and I just deleted all my scrolling apps a few months ago. No more social media, no more KZbin app to scroll through shorts, none of it. And life is so much simpler and calmer, and I feel glowingly happy just sitting on my couch, looking out the window at the sunshine, with a book in my lap. In silence. Lower dopamine levels really do make all of life feel more pleasant. And now, my husband has decided to do the same thing, and we are even enjoying each other even more, even though our marriage was already great! We’re spending more time on Bible study, reading next to each other, even sitting on our little balcony for an hour and just watching the sunset and talking when we feel like it. It’s so. Nice.

It is the lack of stimulation that allows us to stop tearing up our brains and think clearly - naturally allowing novel ideas to flow. The need for constant stimulation is what keeps us trapped in a comfortably numb state where development feels unnecessary because life is just good enough.

Then I deleted all my social media accounts. Then when I turned to youtube for comfort I turned youtube recommendations off. I thus only see what I have subsribed to (whis is less that 10 channels). Sometimes I search for what I need. Now I have replaced the time with hobbies like sewing, painting, reading. Enjoyed the video, as I did with other things written by Cal. I would very much enjoy reading about the challenges of the "deep lifestyle". You throw away the shallow, you make time to think deep and read more. Then you think deep about your mortality, about the pointlessness of a lot of things. You read something like Jason Hickel's "Less is More" and then not sleep for a month. There are plenty of challenges to this style of life, especially for non-spiritual people. The shallow stuff numbs the mind, but when the mind awakes and becomes creative it's not garanteed to produce happiness or even contentment, it can go to dark places and stay there. A great purpose/vision would help with that, but it's not easy to produce such a thing for non-spiritual people.

I think it also has to do with the overwork culture in the US. Personally, the distractions become sweeter when I'm pushing myself beyond what is reasonable. If I'm keeping the amount of work done everyday to a reasonable limit, the distractions bother me less. In fact, they become boring, because they really are boring.

Absolutely. Great example/metaphor: smoking and other addictions. It’s a bit more complex because we all have to do SOME activity online, but we certainly can refrain from social media. Still, even google, youtube, etc. can be overstimulating if your mind is prone to that type of addiction/going down rabbit holes. So for those things, there do need to be some rules of engagement. What you do and don’t do. But overall, yes, take yourself OFF completely, social. IMO

I do love KZbin though, saved thousands of dollars on doing my own home and auto repairs using videos that simply never existed years ago, not to mention numerous occasions finding a video to help me understand a complex problem at work. It is such an endemic problem now across all age groups I think the comparison with Tobacco and internet largely holds up, ie we will very soon realise the obvious significant damage we have been doing to ourselves individually and on a societal level. We conceptualise it as technology and that creates a false distinction from the effects that are just as biological as any disease or mental illness, but because it isn't a chemical or a virus we don't draw the straight line, we tell ourselves we don't have a problem, it's not *that* bad, it doesn't need to be *immediately* addressed.. Obviously there has always been mindless and meaningful entertainment, but this current form feels like the crack-cocaine version of entertainment and stimulation, novelty novelty novelty.

If you can stop doing something completely for 3-6 months, you are pretty much proving that you don't need that at all in the first place.

Some great advice 🙏 but just to clarify about KZbin.. I think this is the biggest problem, at least for me… are you suggesting removing from your phone and accessing it via a browser on the phone with this plugin… is that even possible? Or just access from pc via browser with plugin?

@Adriana14377 but I find it interesting that in the video he says that you can't even have a small dose of the poison and I disagre with him but I might be wrong idk, for example I love gaming but I game 1-2 hours before bed after finishing all of my tasks for the day

Social media, smartphones, and the internet should either be banned or heavily regulated. All three have been extremely detrimental to social interaction, personal wellbeing (especially mental health), the amplification and sophistication of crime, and the destruction of economic systems.

Jesus, have you learned nothing from history? It’s filled with fools and idiots like you who want to control others lives. This always means a human is put in control of another’s life with THIER ideology. Personal responsibility, that’s all you need. Not daddy government telling you how much screen time you can have.

In a capitalistic society, most governments and corporations would encourage that. Dumbed down ppl are easier to control and profit off of. That change is up to the individual unfortunately

I do understand the simple solution but I don't think it helps much. Of course it's easy to say "just don't do the thing" If it was that easy everyone on the planet would utter the phrase, then magic. What behavior they don't want will just go away.

At the end of the day, that is what you have to do, I guess there are different ways to do it and you have to find something that works. It's like standing on a high diving board - all you have to do is take a step. Easy to do, but what gets in the way is thinking about it. You really just have to do it without thinking, basically disengage your brain. But it's like a muscle, and you have to build up its strength. Your first pushup or pullup is hard, but once you understand what to do, you have to keep trying until you can "just do it" (or "not do it", in this case, or do something else). And then you " just do 10" until you can try to "just do 20". But there is no way to think or feel about it to make it work, really, you really have to decide to do it - when you decide to do it, that's when it happens. But you have to be willing to decide to do it, and it can take time to overcome your resistance to doing it. It helps to remove some things that are distracting you or otherwise holding you back from being willing to do it. E.g. tidying up your space, reducing the clutter in your life (including things you have to do). You can also get more comfortable with the idea by thinking about it and running it through in your mind But at some point it really comes down to deciding to do or not do something.

9:37 This youtube strategy is very keen, however at 11:40 i would argue that your KZbin algorithm on your TV is worse than on your phone. KZbin recommends are way better on your phone. And im a music person im really into music, the industry, and practicing it But the recommendations for new music are 10x better on Spotify than KZbin, apple music is prolly 5x better. So i feel like this video really helps address allot of my personal problems but because im a music creator i got some exceptions for this. KZbin’s algorithm is really hard at discerning music/ beats you rewatch all the time, from tutorials and often puts you into an echo chamber of tutorials for certain activities and songs/ beats you youre burnt out on or have written finished songs to which constricts my ability to be recommended beats for me to make new music to. Just my experience
