I realized that the power is within me to choose slow living over the superficial rapid-fire lifestyle that would appear to others that I am productive, therefore successful. That outward appearance of my happiness or success to others just doesn't matter me anymore and I feel lighter for it. You just speak it so eloquently....

The Deep Life Stack : 1. Discipline - Change your identification. Persist with things that are difficult at the time. Discipline is your identity. Cultivate it. a. Find something that you will do. b. End Goal --> Everyday what do you do about it. Keep track of it. 2. Values - What is important to you. a. Code - Something you live by. Eg - honesty,integrity. b. Rituals - Some ritual to reinforce the code. c. Routine - Reflecting whether you are living by it or not. Easier if you are religious. Insurance for disaster = Discipline + Values. 3. Calm - Gain control over life (time) and leverage your control. How much can you take on your plate before you blow out. It might take upto a year if you start from scratch 4. Plan - Buckets. What does this aspect of your life look like? Family relation, community relation etc.

We should add the concept of 'Season' in this stack. For example, the next 3 months of my life I have termed it as 'Savings season', where I will try to save as much money as I can. The next to next 3 months will be 'Creation Season', where I will work on my projects. In this way, my mind knows that the things will be taken up eventually, and I need not fret over it.

Thats true, that is why in nature there are cicles "seasons" and in our daily life there is the cicle of the day - morning - afternoon- evening - night. When we understand this, everything changes

Cal, I have to say that you were a major catalyst that helped me change my life. When I clicked on the first video about Deep Life I had no idea the way it would resonate. I lived minute to minute just flailing in the wind. Overworked, underperforming, stressed and depressed all the time. Your advice helped me in a way that I’m not used to from online productivity personalities or “self help” gurus. Your advice is candid and well researched. Your books are amazingly well written and approachable. Your advice is impressively sage for the broadness of audience. Thank you for the work you put in!

I've watched my husband live like this for nearly 30 years, and now our son is building a meaningful, beautiful life like his dad and grandfather did. It all adds up to deep joy and satisfaction not only for themselves, but their families. Loved how you laid it out and named the parts. They did it because their fathers modeled it. What treasure.

I can see why focusing on discipline first makes sense. The need to prove to yourself that you will keep commitments and seeing yourself as a disciplined person. I always think of discipline, organization and follow thru via the lens of a book called the four tendencies written by Gretchen Rubens. The tendencies are basically one’s ability to meet commitments outside and inside. . I am revisiting life planning because I MADE IT to retirement and moved to the island of Madeira. I am enjoying learning how to garden, decorate and cook because I traveled for work full-time for decades. I know eventually I will need MORE and don’t want to go into the next phase of my life in a random manner. I am no longer defined by my career. Lots of good work being done for mid-lifers at MEA Modern Elder Academy is also helping me.

This was truly common-sensical & mind-blowing at the same time for me. I plan, plan, and plan all the time but get nothing done nor get anywhere! Obviously, now that I know the concepts spoken about in this video. Without the foundations, no wonder none of my plans take off. Thank you for this video.

"Rushing is another form of going nowhere." (from the mindfulness workbook 30 Days to Overcome Procrastination by Corin Devaso). This content is powerful. We think we're getting ahead by forcing and pushing and striving, but often fall way behind as a result. To get ahead it takes slowing down to be mindful and intentional and work quality improves.

When Cal mentioned rituals and code, the five precepts of Buddhism came to my mind. I believe anyone, regardless of their religion, can observe these five precepts. They will greatly improve your life, and you can always reflect on these precepts if you ever choose to live by the code. These will not only bring good to your life but also to every living being in the world. The 5 percepts are: 1. I observe, refraining from killing any living beings. 2. I observe, refraining from what does the owner not give. 3. I observe, refraining from committing sexual misconduct. 4. I observe, refraining from telling lies. 5. I observe, refraining from taking any intoxicant or drug.

Rituals are meaningful and symbolic that hold personal, cultural, or emotional significance Think: Gratitude practice, family dinners, nature walks, etc. Routine is more repetitive activities that help us manage our lives efficiently without the added symbolism, and less emotional attachment Think: brushing teeth, exercise, meal prep, bedtime routine, etc. Hope this helps with the difference.

So DISCIPLINE/VALUES/CONTROL/VISION is now DISCIPLINE/VALUES/CALM/PLAN? I'm not sure why the change is needed. At the risk of over-simplifying, some fill-in-the-blank templates for each step would help us grok the essence of each stack.

This extract is from episode 252 (Discipline, values, calm, plan). The Discipline; Values; control, vision is from episode 263 (kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZniaiKhqedN3l9k). So, i guess he refines his theory and you should consider DISCIPLINE/VALUES/CONTROL/VISION from episode 263. it was confusing for me too and i have to find the correct framework; but the overall content of each stack remains the same. hopes this help.

@tmmiran
@tmmiran 9 ай бұрын
Here's my 2 cents: Rituals are deliberate routines you follow. You may follow a routine that you didn't create if you live in reactive mode. Rituals imply that you crafted your routine. Also, rituals are usually associated with an end in mind. For example: A ritual before you start deep work.

As a first time listener this presentation was overly technical and buzzwordy. I followed the thoughts until I hit your special terms and it made me question whether I could ever understand what you mean. I wanted to share but realized the people that need advice like this wouldn’t be able to follow it because they lack the most basic elements of what you’re describing. How would you explain this to a teenager? A middle schooler? The mental age of the audience who can actually follow what you’re saying is way past the absolute starting point you are trying to help people build from. See the problem?

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:01 📝 Cal Newport introduces the concept of "Deep Life Stack" as a framework for rebuilding one's life. 01:11 🔄 The first layer of the stack is "Discipline," emphasizing the importance of self-identification and the ability to persist in difficult tasks for long-term benefits. 05:10 🌱 The second layer is "Values," where one establishes their code, rituals, and routines that align with what is important to them. 09:50 🌤 The third layer is "Calm," focusing on gaining control over one's life and leveraging that control to create breathing room. 12:25 🗺 The final layer is "Plan," where one divides their life into major areas and starts to think about what changes they want to make in each. 15:01 🔄 Newport emphasizes the importance of iteration, suggesting that one should revisit each layer of the stack periodically to make adjustments. 18:31 📊 The conversation shifts to the importance of having a structured life, arguing that without organization, it's difficult to make significant changes. 19:57 🕒 Newport argues that having a structured time management system is key to gaining back time and achieving "time affluence." 20:41 📚 Newport concludes by stating that the psychological switch achieved through discipline is crucial for all other layers of the Deep Life Stack.
