What's more deceptive than a shapeshifter? A telepathic shapeshifter. Not only do they know their victim's mindset, but they know what their victim's peers expect of them. The D&D doppleganger can impersonate you well enough to make YOU look like the fake.

I actually got to play a doppleganger in a game once as a PC in D&D. It was so much fun navigating that. They had to navigate how often they had been rejected, the impossibly large dose of imposter syndrome, and the fact that they only wanted to be themselves. But they weren't even sure they knew who they were as an individual because of what they were. It was a lot of fun navigating the relationship they had with themselves and the fact that they were a monster.

Honestly, as an autistic person, that sounds very familiar, which is definitely making me think but at the same time it makes total sense to me that it would Autistic people might have been the source of the fey child myth and feeling like you're a doppelganger playing the part of yourself isn't uncommon at all when you're autistic either This has long since been a fascination of mine and I feel like, actually, it's probably a feeling a lot of people, who can't quite be themselves can relate to

@@whisperingdorito1456 I absolutely agree. As an autistic person myself, I put a lot of my own experiences and feelings into him and his backstory. Unfortunately the campaign fell apart, but he's still my favorite and I adore him.

I just got into a game where the DM let me bring my homebrew ooze that can shapeshift using the bones(and some memories) of his victims. Hes enslaved by a crime family and was charged with protecting their daughter, his only friend, on a mission. but he failed and she died so he has taken on her appearance to finish her mission and avenge her, hoping to escape the crime family before they know what he did.

Oh my gosh, this makes me think of my storm sorceresses husband. He's a changeling, but spent his whole life hiding it because of fear of persecution due to mistrust. There was one point after he told my character what he was, that they were listening to a dwarf tell a story about his own adventures; the story was about how a group of doppelgangers had killed a family and the dwarf and his group had to get revenge... She could feel him tense, and one of the things he told her during that was that it was stories like that which made him hide who he was. A rp decade later and they're happily married with a daughter whos a changeling like him.

Imagine being a doppelganger, as a monster you can't live a normal life as a citizen. Your only option is to find some unlucky soul who you can learn enough about to replicate and you can dispose of them quietly. You have to make sure they don't come back, easier to simply kill them, but if someone learns that you kill and replaced someone they knew, it would be far worse than if you simply chose not to have face. Now, you have *have* to play that role and you might not actually identify with it but you are already into too deep, aren't you? Can you really go back to simply being some faceless monster, after everything you have done to get *a* face? Can you risk *anyone* knowing your secret, despite having done something unforgivable, killing someone? Can you continue to wear that face, despite knowing it would never *fit* you?

I actually ran a doppleganger once. I didn't do the whole impersonation thing instead having it look like a wood elf luring them into a dungeon splitting them up letting my party give them access to the weakest party member. The survived so no worries.

My character got spelled to think the BBEG is my bff we’re playing Curse of Strahd… Strahd is my best friend now and no one in my group has noticed my weirdness. Like they’ve noticed but not enough to make them realize what’s going on…. Only the DM knows it happened he had me roll secretly. I think we’re all going to die honestly but I’ll be fun

I have a question out of genuine curiosity, why do you blame someone who most likely only wants to express themselfes creatively and not the companies who build their networks unethically? I'm not trying to attack you or put you into a corner, I understand why you're angry, I think but to me blaming the person who uploaded this seems like blaming a player in a game for using a weapon that the devs failed to balance and this probably isn't going to stop until we stop companies from building their AIs on theft, it's much harder and less of a permanent fix to try and control ever single person who uses these

They make me so genuinely upset and everyone who defends them makes me sad at how they can't look past their own "Omg this is so cool and useful!" to see how it's negatively impacting people in a big way. I'm also not upset at everyone who uses AI- I'm upset at those who use AI and don't disclose that they haven't made it. And I'm especially mad at those who demand credit for using AI when it's not learning off anything they made like this person is "Share the music in your content as long as proper credit is given." "Feel free to use my songs in your videos, streams, or projects! Just make sure to properly credit my channel by tagging or mentioning @D and Dungeons in the video description." Would I still be sad if I knew from the beginning that this was made by AI? Yes. Am I miles more upset because this person used AI and passed it off as they're own work? Absolutely I am. (TLDR: I very much AM pissed at companies for building AI off art theft and pretty much the only reason I'm mad at this person is that they're not disclaiming it's done with AI)
